Chapter 3
Ghost house is an old and abandoned wooden house, which has become black with the passage of time, and beatings of weather. It is located roughly half-a-mile deep into the forest, on the broken road that turns from the corner of Jess's street.
It is in the middle of a tall, black iron fence (which is squaring it).
Trees collar the fence from three sides. The fourth or the front side faces a dirt path that leads across to the river. Inside the fence there are bushes and grass and tall plants, all dead and stiff and gray.
In a way, the lawn looks even: dead and ugly.
The name "Ghost house" is just a made-up name by the kids of Mellow Ville. Apparently, there are no stories about this house. No stories at all.
The moon was a thin crescent in the twilight. When Alex left his house, he was nervous. I'm going to Jim's for a sleepover, Mom, he had said.
Jess was in her lawn, walking bare feet on the grass, gazing the stars as they were appearing. Today, Alex wasn't there in the library. He hadn't looked at her once in the class. And when school ended, he was gone before she turned back.
She was feeling uneasy. Alex was always there, somewhere. But today he wasn't. She suddenly thought if he is somewhere "Hanging out" with Emma, who he is really getting close to these days. And, of course, Emma's a bitch. Jess knows so. With her long, red hair, her plum lipstick, and her creamy skin, she traps boys in falling in love with her, and when they do, she breaks their heart. Now thinking that aloud, it seemed more like something she once read in a novel.
She went to the fence, and leaned on it to look up and down the street. Then, she went back to her stairs and sat on them.
She was staring at the empty street. Her tired eyes were hopelessly waiting to see someone. Suddenly, a few cats ran down the street, and she thought they were running in a line.
Then, she saw Alex walking by. Her heart leaped in joy, and a smile spread on her face without her knowing.
Alex quickly glanced at her house, (old habits), and when he saw her on the stairs he looked back straight, like he never saw her.
She saw him glancing, but when he quickly looked back, for a moment she thought he never did. She felt a cold push inside her, like her heart skipped a beat.
Alex was already past her house, and she ran to her fence, "Alex!" she called.
Alex stopped, and reluctantly he turned back.
"Hi, Alex," She said, breathing fast.
"Hey," He said.
"I didn't see you, today."
"Oh."
"Where were you?"
"I was with Jim."
Then silence. He wasn't looking at her, like he was avoiding her eyes, and the way he was talking was...different.
Almost like he doesn't want to talk to her. Maybe not almost, but exactly. She was fining it hard to believe so she continued, "Hey, you know that Emma, I don't she's good. You know." Oh, what have you said, you idiot! She thought and bit her lip.
"No, I think she's nice," Alex said, then looked back to the street.
If you want to go so badly, then why are you even standing here, you idiot! She thought.
He looked uninterested, completely uninterested in talking with her, being with her, or even looking at her, and it was getting clearer to Jess. And she was hating it.
They stood in silence. Her thoughts were visible on her face, but he wasn't looking. Six black cats ran in a line past them, but none of them noticed.
"Where—"
"I have to—"
They both spoke together, and then they both paused.
"I have to go," Alex said. She looked in her eyes and said, "Yeah, you better." Then she turned and walked away. That coldness in Alex's eyes was still pinning in her heart.
She went back to the stairs, in the door, to her room.
She sat on her bed, with an expressionless face. Her eyes looking nowhere, her mind still on that cold conversation.
She felt a warm tear on her cheek. Hey, it's nothing, she thought to herself, and wiped it. Another tear rolled down. Hey, it's nothing, she thought again, and wiped it. Then she closed her eyes and tears streamed out. She lied on the bed, her face against the pillow, her tears warm on her face. He hates me, he hates me now. I don't even know why! What did I do wrong? Why is this happening with me? I'm a stupid stupid idiot! He will never talk to me again. He's gone now. He's gone forever.
