Chapter 78 Sam
"Dmitri!" I screamed as his body slumped against the door. "Nate!" I grabbed the phone that fell in Dmitri's lap. Hitting the speaker button then placing the phone beside me, needing both hands on the wheel as I raced down the road. Right know I wished he did not blindfold me. I didn't have a clue where we were. The last thing Dmitri did was point right as we hit the road.
"I'm here Sam. He's been shot with a tranquilizer gun, he's sleeping," Nate's said sounding calm.
Reaching over to feel for a pulse and finding a strong one had my heart slow down a bit. Keeping my foot down on the gas I continued to look in the rear view mirror. The third time I looked, in a matter of a minute, a set of headlights came out of nowhere was behind us. "Ah, Nate? I could just be paranoid...well more paranoid than I already am, but a set of headlights just seemed to come out of nowhere and is about 100 feet behind me." I fought to stay in control, losing it would not get Dmitri help. White knuckling the steering wheel, wanting to look at Dmitri, but needing to stay focused on driving as I increased the speed from fast to dangerous. "There's another set right behind the other one!" My calm was dwindling fast. The two cars behind us picked up their speed as well.
"Sam, I need you to try to stay calm. I'm going to hand the phone over to Quinn now," Nate said. I thought I heard his engine accelerate.
"Easier said than done," I mumbled to myself. The cars were catching up and I was afraid of losing control of the jeep if I went any faster.
"Hey Sam. Some date you're having," Quinn's deep voice rumbled over the line.
"Just freakin' fantastic!" My voice crept higher. I knew he was trying to keep my mind off the real issue, but it was far from working. "Quinn, they are getting closer and if I drive any faster I'm going to run us off the road," I bit out. I was getting closer and closer to panic mode.
"We're almost there. You should see our headlights any second," Quinn said after he mumbled something to Nate I thought. "Nate's going to flash his high beams. Tell me when you see them."
"It better be in the next three seconds because these guys are almost on top of me!" Panic settled in nicely at that moment. The first car was less than two car lengths behind. "Quinn!"
Before he could respond I saw flashing lights coming towards us. "Please, please tell me that's you," I begged.
"It's us," Quinn reassured me.
Looking in the rear view mirror again, I saw the two cars that were following us hit their brakes and quickly turned around and headed back the way they came. "They just hit the brakes and are heading back the other way," I told Quinn, I should had felt relieved but all I felt was wired. My adrenaline was pumping and I was scared out of my mind.
"I need you to stop so I can jump in with you," Quinn said. They were about a half kilometre away.
My breathing started to slow. I did as he told me ad started to slow down but stayed on the road in case I had to take off again. The sight of Nate's truck brought tears to my eyes. "Hold on Dmitri," I whispered. Eyes darting everywhere making sure no one was about to sneak up on us. The cars that were following us had disappeared as quickly as the appeared.
Now at a complete stop I stared at Nate's truck, there were outlines of figures sitting inside, but none of it registered. My door opened so fast I didn't have time to scream, It was Quinn.
"Jump in the back. I'm going to drive," his voice soft, but stern. I just stared at him. My fingers infused on the steering wheel, placing his hand over mine, "It's Ok Sam. Let go," he said, prying my fingers off the wheel with ease. Brushing my hair behind my ear, his touch was comforting and that let the floodgate break through. Quinn wiped the fallen tears away, whispering, "You're safe. Climb in the back for me please, so we can get back to your place where everybody is waiting."
Doing as I was told, I buckled up, and Quinn raced us back home.
