Chapter 8: Side Quest

[Time Skip, One Week]

I walked into the dust shop and began looking around. Dust, a naturally occurring, crystallized energy propellant triggered by the aura of humans and faunus. For unknown reasons, Dust does not function outside of the atmosphere of Remnant, precluding the possibility of space flight. Huntsman use Dust as a very effective aid in their fight with the Creatures of Grimm. I had finally taken a few jobs Ozpin had and collected a good amount of "Lien", this world's currency. I looked over some of the Dust crystals, they seemed simple enough. Crystallized Sodium Dioxide, powdered Copper, powdered Magnesium, Iron Oxide mixed with Aluminium powder. Some have better quality then the rest, some are made cheaply while the others are made with high valued metals. Although this stuff is mined, maybe some places have richer deposits then most. Not that complex really. I probably don't even need to buy that much, just enough to study. I may even be able to make some improvements.

Me: "Excuse me? I need to buy 3 of-"

Male: "You two, freeze!"

Me: "Hm?"

I looked over my shoulder to see two men and one female dressed in matching outfits with white masks holding guns. One male had wolf ears, while the other had antlers. The female had nothing out of the ordinary, but I have a feeling she's a Faunus as well. A faction of just Faunus? I should've guessed there were racial tensions between human and Faunus, then again there's racial tension no matter where you go.

Me: 'Why do they look like a knock off pokémon villain faction?'

I turned around to face them fully and stared with a bored look.

Me: "You three really don't understand what you're about to get into."

The two men looked at each other, then looked back to me.

Male: "Yeah ri-"

I pointed my index finger at the man and spoke plainly.

Me: "Lightning Bolt."

Suddenly a powerful bolt of lightning shot from my finger tip and smashed the male into the wall behind him. There was a large burn mark on his stomach, where I aimed, that he was clutching onto while spasming and twitching uncontrollably. The others looked back at their accomplice then slowly looked back to me. The male aimed his rifle at me and began to shoot blindly. I stepped in front of the shopkeeper and created a ball of blue Magic in my hand.

Me: "DragonHide."

I raised up my arms and blocked my face as I felt the bullets hit my skin... then crumple and fall off. The frightened male unloaded the entire clip. As the pause happened where he needed to reload I lunged forward faster then he could react and punched him in the stomach. The male flew back next to his other accomplice and slumped over. I then looked over to the remaining attacker.

Me: "Are you going to attack as well?"

The female looked to her friends, then to me. She suddenly created something from her palm, it looked almost like thick spider webbing. Without warning she threw it at me, in the form of a lasso. With little effort I caught it and held it tightly, then began to inspect it.

Me: "Protein crystals in a matrix of amino acids. Down to the very atoms, it's spider silk."

The female tried to yank the webbing towards her, most likely trying to make me stumble forward, however I didn't budge a millimeter. As she was distracted with trying to pull me towards her, I yanked the webbing towards me, making her come with it and stumble into my range. In one fluent motion I wrapped the webbing around the female and tied it, with a nice little bow, then pushed the girl next to her friends.

Me: "Spider Silk is as strong as steel... well not really, technically it's about half as strong as steel however unlike steel, spider silk is very extensible, so it actually is 'tougher' than steel.... Sorry, got off track."

I turned to the shopkeeper.

Me: "You can go ahead and contact the police."

[Time Skip, Brought to You by Chibi Blake Reading While surrounded by Books.]

I began walking aimlessly through Vale, marking out routes and landmarks. As I did so I could tell someone was following me, not on the street, but by rooftop. They were nimble, and pretty quick. They kept a respectable distance, however they weren't out of my area of perception. I soon came across a park, open area, trees, perfect place for an ambush. I walked through the gates and listened as I heard my peruser jump down from the rooftop and scurry behind trees. They were light on their feet too, probably used to this kind of work. I took a seat on one of the benches and started doing random things in my system. The person didn't move however.

Me: 'Recon only? Someone wants to keep an eye on me. Odd.'

I slowly stood up and looked in the direction of the mystery spy.

Me: "Come on out. You've been following me for a while now."

I waited a moment, they didn't move at all. I sighed and stretched a bit.

Me: "Well fine then."

I pushed myself forward at a speed just below the speed of sound, as to not break the sound barrier, then delivered a kick to the trunk of the tree. Wood splintered and the tree was knocked to the side, crashing into another tree, as soon as my feet hit the ground I grabbed onto the person's neck with a very light grip and picked them up. I wasn't very surprised to see that the person I was holding was the same female from the group that tried to rob the Dust shop.

Me; "Guess I should've escorted you to prison myself. But then again I hate escort missions, people can never keep up."

I dropped the girl and watched as she gasped and crumbled to her knees. I kneeled down and snatched the mask off her face, while also removing the hood. The girl looked to be about 17 or 18, guess I would be around that age if I didn't start jumping universes. Her hair was shoulder length, Black with slight yellow imprints, almost like the ones on a spider's abdomen. Her eyes showed surprise and fear with a reddish shine.

Me: "Why were you following me?"

I stared her down, using a skill called "Intimidation". It allows me to... well, intimidate my target into submitting to my will. To me, I'm simply looking at her. To her, she's feeling an immense strain on her consciousness, fighting to even stay awake.

Female: "He... I... she... I was..."

I stopped using the skill and stood up,

Me: "Speak. Clearly."

I spoke in a calm yet stern voice. Showing her I only wanted answers.

Female: "The... The White Fang saw what happened at Beacon... the fight with that team. They wanted me to see what you were."

I paused and thought for a moment.

Me: "What I am?"

I chuckled.

Me: "You know. If you find the answer... I'd love to know."

My smile faded and I cracked my back.

Me: "Time to get you to jail, Charlotte."

The girl looked at me confused.

Ariana: "Charlotte? That's not my name. It's Ariana."

Me: "Ariana? Pretty close to 'spider' in Spanish. Although my Spanish is a bit rusty,"

Ariana: "What'd you say?"

Me: "Not important. Come on, jail time."

Ariana: "Wait! Wait! What if... I..."

She began thinking, most likely a way to talk her way out.

Ariana: "What if I work as a double agent! I could feed you info on the White Fang, and you could keep me from going to jail."

She looked at me with hope in her eyes, which was crushed the moment I gave her an uninterested look.

Me: "I don't like walkthroughs. They ruin the experience."

She quickly began thinking again.

Ariana: "What if I be your companion? I'll protect you and-"

I pointed over at the tree I smashed.

Me: "Does it look like I need protection?"

She shook her head and looked at the ground.

Me: "Pick your head up and get off the ground. I don't have all day."

I started typing in coordinates into my device, once I entered them I looked up and held out my hand, my palm facing outward.

Me: "Fast travel."

A tear ripped its way through the air and created a crude portal in front of me.

Me: "Come on. Stop staring and walk through it."

The girl was staring at the portal. Well, portal is a broad term. It's actually a tear in this reality's space. My device rips an opening for me, then crushes the distance between my destination and my current location. The best way to explain it is imagining an aluminum can being crushed. The girl was taking far to long to snap out of her daze, so I pushed her through the tear and lazily walked through it myself.
