Chapter 4 - Freedom
(Chapter 3 – Continued...)
I guess I fell asleep because when I woke up, Josh and Tom were each sat in a chair either side of my bed.
"Hey..." I say, shifting myself so I'm sat up properly.
"Hey JJ, how you feeling?" Tom asks, putting down the book he was reading whilst Josh puts away his phone.
"I'm feeling a lot better...they said that I should be able to go home tomorrow if I can eat something" I say looking at the clock to see its 5 o'clock.
"My mum should be here soon..." I say.
"You kicked her out didn't you?" Tom says, making me laugh.
"Not as such but yes." I say, making him smile.
"Yeah, your mum always could talk for hours" Tom says, remembering the days when they went to school together. I looked at Josh and laughed as my mum happened to walk into the room at the very moment.
"Yeah, you were always the quiet one" She says, making us all laugh. Tom gets up to let my mum sit down. Josh moves to sit next to me on the bed and Tom takes his seat. I lean onto Josh's shoulder and listen as the 3 make conversation between them. Before I knew it I felt my eyes drifting shut again which didn't last long as I woke up to the feeling that I was going to be sick again. I managed to grab the bowl next to my bed just in time as I threw up again. I continued to sit forward over the bowl until the nausea started to fade again. Josh sat next to me and rubbed my back which helped a lot.
"Oh- god sorry" I muttered as Amber came in and took the bowl off me.
"It's okay. You're due your meds now so that's probably why." Amber says, handing me some tissue. I wipe my mouth and take a swig of my drink before leaning back on my bed again. Tom glances at his watch.
"Right, come on you. We better be off." He says, getting up. Josh nods and stands up collecting his things. He gives me a hug before they leave. I snuggle back down in bed as Amber returns with my medication.
It's now 8pm and my mum is getting ready to go home. I had to make another mad dash for the sick bowl before my meds finally started to kick in again. I said goodnight to my mum before falling asleep again. It's safe to say that this virus, whatever it was, was seriously taking its toll on my body.
Time Skip to the Next Morning >>>
I woke up the next morning feeling a lot better. I still felt achy, but I didn't really feel sick. I was allowed off the I.V so Amber came to remove before I had a shower. I changed into a pair of leggings and a baggy hoodie before sitting back down in bed. The doctors came to check on me early in the morning and said that I was well enough to go home as long as I managed to eat something. The thought of food still made my stomach turn but I was willing to do anything if it meant I could go home. I kept it simple and ate some dry toast and some fruit. I was still taking the anti-nausea meds and would be for at least another week, but I managed to keep down my breakfast, so I was cleared to go home under strict instructions to rest and take the rest of the week off school. I was now just waiting on my mother to come and pick me up. She walked into the room just after 9am.
"Ready to go home love?" She asked, grabbing my bag for me. I nodded my head and picked up my phone before we left. I stopped to thank the nurses and doctors before we left.
"Mum...can we go to the school? I want to speak to Miss Mason about getting the work I've missed sent home. It's also her last day today..." I say, as we get in the car.
"Okay...but not for long" She says, starting the car and heading towards the school. When we arrive, we head up to the office area.
"Hi Janeece, is Miss Mason in?" I ask.
"JJ! Glad to see you better...yes, she is" Janeece replies, getting up and walking over to the office door.
"Miss, I have JJ and her mother to see you" She says, before we walk into the office.
"Ah- JJ. How are you feeling?" Miss Mason asks, as we sit down across from her.
"Much better thanks"
"What can I do for you?" She asks with a smile.
"Well, I was wondering if you could get some work arranged to be sent home as I won't be in until next week – possibly later." I say, not wanting to fall behind.
"Of course, I'm sure Josh or Mr Clarkson can drop it round" She says, writing something down.
"Thank you...I also wanted to say goodbye as I know today is your last day" I say.
"Ah- thank you..." She says, getting up to give me a hug. Mum stands up and Miss Mason walks us out of the office.
"Ermm...is Mr Mead teaching right now?" I ask Janeece. She checks his timetable.
"No, but he's on cooler duty" She says, making me look at my mum and Miss Mason.
"Can I go see him quickly? Let him know I'm okay?" I say, referring to the fact that he was there when I collapsed. Miss Mason nods her head and I walk away, heading towards the cooler. When I get there, I see Mr Mead sat at the front, marking some books. I walk inside, and he looks up.
"Hi" I say, giving him a smile.
"How are you feeling JJ?" He asks, putting down his pen.
"I'm okay. Just got released this morning. Wanted to pop to sort out some work and all that as I'm not coming back until next week, possibly later. I also wanted to say goodbye to Miss Mason" I say, leaning on one of the tables at the front.
"Glad to hear you're feeling better. You gave us quite a scare there" He says, referring to when I fainted.
"Thanks. Well I best be off. I'll see you next week" I say, getting up and making my way back outside to where mum is waiting in the car. I get inside, and we start to drive home. When I get home, I take my meds before curling up on the sofa with mum to watch a film. I'm asleep before the film even finishes as I'm exhausted. Jeez, I never thought I'd be saying this but I can't wait to go back to school.
