CHAPTER TWENTY TWO
"Are you sure we're allow to be up here?" Andy held onto her glasses, the wind threatening to take them. She looked at her best friend, though unrecognisable thanks to the powers of the mouse miraculous.
Souris shrugged, "I'm not sure, probably not."
"Benji!" She squealed, her voice sounding much higher than she had intended.
He giggled, "We can go somewhere else if you want."
Andy looked at the view. Souris had taken her to one of the tallest hotels in both Sydney City and outer Sydney. The view was beautiful and showed both the beautiful and ugly parts of Liverpool, she sighed, "I think I'm gonna need a break before another thirty minutes of you carrying me around."
Souris grinned, he knew she would love it here. "I patrolled here once, no akumas but there was a lot of petty crimes."
"Really?" Andy questioned. Being born and raised in Campbelltown she knew all about the petty crimes of Western Sydney but her mind still leaped to the question, what are the heroes doing when I'm not creating akumas?
"Yeah, a lot of youth crime, like kids our age," he explained, a sad expression reaching his face, "Some of those kids looked even younger."
"What did Renard and Peafowl do about it?"
"Renard was really strict, Peafowl was a lot more understanding, but I think they both didn't really understand," he shrugged, "I don't know, it happened a couple weeks ago."
Andy sat down, "I'm proud of you Benji," she placed a hand on his, "You're fighting for the side of good, not everyone-," her breath hitched, "not everyone is that brave."
Souris blushed as her hand touched his, due to both the complement and the fact that this is the closest he has felt to her in months. "You would had made the same choice too, Andrea."
Andy looked away.
"Right?"
Andy hates lying to Benji, so she didn't. "I'm not too sure I would." Her eyes didn't dare meet his, her shame was something that made her feel like hiding but she couldn't, she couldn't move, she was stuck and Souris was watching her. "I mean- if I had to choose between being a supervillain and seeing my parents again, being a supervillain or being an orphan, I would choose being a villain."
Silence.
Souris didn't say anything, he just stared at Andy, he found himself counting the curls in her short hair, the small faint freckles on her bronze cheek, he lost track in the small details of her face and than he saw it, the guilt, the shame. The ugly emotions that in the last months Andy hasn't let anyone see, "I would do the same," he finally said.
Andy snapped her neck, looking at him, "You would?"
"Yeah. I mean- I've never met my parents. They could of died before I was born or just not wanted me but as a kid I told myself it was the first one. Growing in a household where you are already not wanted, you don't need another reason to think that you're a mistake. So for every birthday, every four leaf clover, I would wish that my parents had somehow survived their death and that they were trying to find me but they just didn't know my new name. So, yeah. Andy. I think I would do the same."
"Then why don't you?"
Souris cracked a smile, "Could you seriously imagine me as a supervillain? Me?" He shook his head, the thought was so unreal to him it was almost funny, "I wouldn't be able to pull it off."
"But what if you could?" Andy moved close to Souris, her body now facing the superhero. Andy grabbed his hands, and held them tightly. "Four months ago, the Benji I knew wouldn't had believed you had it in you to be a superhero, but look at you now!"
Souris moved her hands from his, "Why do you care about this so much?"
Andy reached her hand into her pocket, she rubbed her fingers against her miraculous, "Benji, I was thinking-"
Souris looked more carefully at Andy's face, she had bags which was poorly covered by her slightly off-shade makeup, he knew Andy hadn't been sleeping well since her father died. Her father's passing had only happened four months ago, on December 23rd, but now he was starting to think she might not be sleeping for a different reason.
He saw her desperation and it scared him.
"Andrea, what aren't you telling me?" He asked warily.
Andy trusts him, she knows that her secret will be safe with Benji. "Benji, I'm Mariposa."
"Andy, that isn't funny." Souris backed away from her, placing a tight grip around his miraculous.
"Benji," she lowered her voice, speaking so soft that some might confuse Souris for a baby. He gasped, his breath getting caught in his throat, he felt as if he couldn't breathe. "Benji, breathe, it's okay." Andy moved over to Souris, softly placing a hand on his back.
He flinched away from her, finally regained his ability to speak, "No! No! I- I don't believe you! You can't- you can't be her!" Souris stood up, the boy was tall, a lot taller than Andy, especially sitting down, "Show me! Transform, prove it!"
Andy grabbed out her miraculous and with tears in her eyes she said her transformation words.
In a flash of light his best friend was no longer standing in front of him but instead was his enemy. "How could you?!" He exploded, "How fucking could you, Andrea! Do you know how many people you have hurt? You almost killed Tartaruga!"
Mariposa wrapped her arms around herself, hot tears running down her face, she has thought this all before, about how selfish she has been but to hear her best friend say it hurt a million times more. "Benji, please-"
"NO! Don't speak! I don't want to listen to you right now."
When Souris looked at the crying girl in front of him, he didn't see his best friend, he saw the villain who in the past four months has made the lives of everyone in Sydney living hell.
"This was my father's plan," Mariposa said simply, not daring to look at Souris' face. She fidgeted with her miraculous as she spoke. "When the accident happened, he was talking to Nooroo. Nooroo was pleading with him to not go through with his plan, my father was so focus on the kwami, that he forgot to check the road."
Souris shook his head, Colin Davis had always been an odd man but he wasn't a bad person, Mr Davis had been Souris' favourite teacher last year. But then again, as out of character it would be for Cole, Souris knew Andy would never lie about something like that. "So, what? You're a villain, to get back at Nooroo?"
"It isn't like that Benji, I'm not trying to hurt anyone."
"You could of fooled me." Souris kept thinking about Tartaruga in the battle with Queen Gambit, how Renard pleaded with Ladybeetle to bring him back, Andy had caused that.
Mariposa clenched her fist, "This was a mistake." She off her miraculous and put it back in her shirt pocket. Souris stared at her, his anger turning into sadness, betrayal. He was looking at his best friend, his crush but also his enemy.
"I can't do this."
Souris threw his jump rope to the nearest building and took off.
Benji sat at the skate park, no one else was there. His eyes were bloodshot red from crying, his hair a messy black bird nest, he had been talking to himself and Mullo, trying to figure out what to do next. Benji was aware of how he looked, if a person were to walk by they would think he is a crazy homeless man talking to himself but Benji didn't care, he couldn't. "I don't know what to do Mullo," he cried.
"You should tell the group."
"I know." When Benji left Andy on the rooftop he was planning on calling the others to a meeting, telling them that Andy is Mariposa. "But I can't, Mu. I can't do that to Andy."
Mullo sat in Benji's hands, the kwami was far too tired to be floating, "Andy is Mariposa, she's dangerous."
"No, she isn't. She's just desperate, maybe if I try to reason with her, she might hand in her miraculous."
"Andrea said it was her father's plan, I doubt she would give up after a little bit of reasoning."
Her father. Benji remembered what Andy said about Cole, about how being Mariposa was his plan, Benji felt sick. Andy, Benji can excuse, she's still a kid. While Colin, he knew better but he planned on becoming a villain anyway. "This is why Mariposa's villains are stronger than Hawkmoth's ones, Cole's plan! I need to read it. Maybe if I studied it then I can learn how to be a better hero from it."
"Benjamin, I don't think-"
"I need to help Andy! She needs someone. I'll also learn parts of her plan to help team!"
Mullo frowned, "This isn't a good idea," she whispered to herself.

I had originally planned to make this a cute Andji (Bendy?) chapter but decided to turn it into angst instead.
