CHAPTER TWENTY
"Is there a reason why you haven't looked up from your phone?" Estrella Reynolds asked.
Aiden muttered a small sorry before turning off his phone and putting it on the counter, he looked at his breakfast, two slices of pizza leftover from the night before. "I'm sorry that I wasn't home last night, I had to meet some friends."
"Friends?" The boy's older sister, questions, "Last time I checked you didn't have any friends."
"Well, I made some."
Estrella smiled brightly, "There is a boy! Tell me! What's his name? Is he cute? A classmate? Where you safe?"
"Stella!" His cheeks flushed at the series of questions, "There is no boy, just friends."
Estrella made a small humming sound before grabbing her pizza and taking a bite. Aiden didn't feel like eating, his mind was flooded, flooded with thoughts of the number saved on his phone, "I'm going to my room, see you when you get back from work Stella."
"Going to text your boyfriend?" She teased as he rushed to his room, i'm never going to hear the end of this, he thought.
Aiden closed the door behind him as he entered the room, his room is quite tamed, maybe even a little basic, with white sheets on his single bed, a bookshelf in the corner, two bedside tables, a wardrobe and a couple of ice skating posters on the walls.
Tikki was sitting on his bed and excitedly got up as he entered, "Did you get me a cookie?"
Aiden reached into his pocket and grabbed out a chocolate chip cookie, "I stole it from Estrella's stash."
Tikki flew up to the cookie and eat half of it in one large bite, Aiden smiled at her eagerness, the boy himself doesn't like chocolate but Estrella loves chocolate. "I think I'm going to call her!" Aiden announced, "Do you want to talk to her?"
Tikki smiled sadly, "Ladybug wouldn't be able to hear me, technology doesn't pick up kwamis."
"Oh, Tikki, I'm so sorry," Aiden couldn't imagine being a kwami, being alive for aeons, only having one purpose, "Do you ever get bored or being a kwami?"
Tikki shook her small redhead, her flouting body following the movement, "I love being a kwami, I always get to meet special and unique people like you, Aiden! If I was not a kwami I never would have been able to meet you."
Aiden's cheeks turned red, "You think I'm special?"
Tikki gleamed, "Yes! Aiden, you are so special, Ladybug is going to be so excited to hear from you."
The boy looked at his phone, the number dialled and waiting for him to press call, "I hope you're right Tikki," he said as he pressed call.
"Salut?"
"Hello, is this Ladybug?"
"Aiden, it's a pleasure to meet you," the speaker turned from french to english, her voice speaking with a strong french accent.
"How-"
"Your telephone number, you are the only Australian who has my number."
"Oh."
"Jument, said you wanted to speak to me?" Ladybug asked but Aiden was too starstruck to respond.
'ladybug! i am talking to ladybug omg omg omg' he was freaking out, looking at the phone like a scarecrow designed to stare. "Aiden, you have to respond."
The boy was snapped out of his thoughts as he heard his kwami's high pitched voice, he shook his head, "Right thank you Tikki."
"Tikki is there?" Ladybug asked sadly, Aiden's heart dropped, the phone was on loudspeaker so Tikki could hear every word.
The small creature sat on the phone screen, as if the screen would teleport her to her guardian, "Could you tell her that I'm right here and that I miss her?"
Aiden nodded his head, he wished he could do more, make the phone hear her but alas being a translator was the most he could do, "Tikki says she's here and that she misses you."
"I miss you too Tikki, so does Ad- Chat Noir," Aiden's ears pricked up at the syllable she said before Chat Noir, chat noir's name starts with ad, it's not like he is trying to figure out Chat Noir's identity but a boy is allowed to be curious.
Aiden waited for Tikki to say something but she said nothing, she just looked at Aiden and waited. "I was wondering if we could have a line of contact," Aiden said, his eyes looking at Tikki for approval. She was smiling.
"You want to call me regularly?"
"Um... No, not regularly, just when the other heroes and I need help, for emergencies." He played with a hairband on his wrist, it's Estrella's but he found it before breakfast and put it on without thinking. "I have so many questions. Like why do you give so many miraculous out, with you and Cat Noir the other miraculous were only part-time heroes, why did you make so many, full-time heroes? Is this because Mariposa is stronger than Hawkmoth or was it just a safety precaution? Why are me and Night older than the rest of the team, did you do that for a reason or was it a coincidence? How come Madkey was just a part-time hero? Are there going to be more part-time heroes or-"
"I'm going to stop you there," the woman's voice silenced him, "One question at a time please."
"Sorry," he muttered.
Ladybug thought of each question, she had already expected the boy to ask similar questions so she was ready with answers polished and perfect. "I'm not sure if your villain is stronger than Hawkmoth, he doesn't seem to be, he is a lot less consistent than Hawkmoth. I knew that I wasn't going to be able to stay in Sydney so instead of creating a duo, I created a team, part-time heroes are a last resort, since there is more of you I hoped you wouldn't need them."
Aiden felt his heart sink, Madkey was a last resort, "I'm sorry you had to use a lastesort."
"You don't need to apologise, sometimes things don't always go as planned," he picked up a small tone of bitterness in her voice, he wondered if she was referring to her previous battles.
Aiden nodded his head, something he realised was stupid because it's not like she can see him. "Um... Ladybug, I was wondering, how do we do power ups?"
"Your kwami ingests a potion."
"How do I do that?"
"You don't, I do."
"But you're in Paris."
"When your team needs it, Jument will give you each a set of power ups," Ladybug explained as Aiden looked at Tikki, the kwami was still sitting on the phone, listening to her old owners voice.
"Jument, knows our identity?" Aiden started to feel himself panic, the thought of anyone knowing his identity made him uneasy but if Ladybug trusts her than maybe he should too.
"Jument doesn't know, yet," Ladybug's voice sounded just as panicked as his thoughts, he wondered why, "I'm not sure if she should be trusted with that information."
"Why? Is she..." He voiced lowered, "Do you think she could be working with Mariposa?"
Ladybug laughed, "No, Jument would never. It's just she is young and just got her miraculous, until two weeks ago she didn't even know I was Ladybug."
That makes sense, Jument looked like she had no idea what she was doing when he and Souris found her trying to give the monkey miraculous to Maddi, even with the language barrier he could easily understand this was her first time.
"But Jument is for me to worry about. Aiden, whatever your lucky charm tell you, listen to it. If your plan involves another hero, call me and Jument will make a portal, if you think you need power ups, I'll get them to you and the team."
Aiden picked Tikki up from his phone screen, he placed her softly in his left hand, Aiden looked at the kwami and thought of the last months, everything that has happened since he met the little red creature. "Why me? There is five million other people living in Sydney, some kinder and way better fit to be a hero than myself, I don't understand what I did."
"Aiden, being a hero is about what you do when no one is looking, it's about doing what is right even when there is no one to thank you for your acts of selflessness, I caught you in a moment of selflessness and I just knew, I knew that Tikki would be happy with you."
Aiden felt warm water on his face, "I-" He didn't know what to say other than, "Thank you."
