WHAT THE HECK just happened?
The last thing I remembered was crashing into the ocean, the hard hit knocking me out. I could still vividly remember the searing pain of the cold water swallowing me whole.
But now I was awake. My eyes were closed, too weak to open up, but I knew I was definitely not dead. I could still smell the salty scent of the sea, and feel a gentle rocking around me.
Except I wasn't in the water anymore.
"She doesn't look like a lost boy," I heard a voice say abruptly, almost causing me to flinch, "in fact, I think she's a girl!"
The voice sounded oddly familiar, a low and dialectical sound, but I was too frightened to open my eyes. I didn't want whoever it was to know I was awake.
Almost exactly after, another familiar voice cleared their throat, this time more squeaky and shy.
"It's not nice to assume someone's gender, Captain," the second voice said, "I think you should ask them."
The first voice scoffed, "I think we should kill them."
"Why?"
"Because they came from the sky, like that horrid boy."
"I don't follow, Captain."
"I'm trying to say that she–" there was a pause, before the low voice corrected themselves, "they could be part of Partridge's gang!"
As I lay on my back, I began to think. I could feel their presences hovering over me, which was scary, but I knew I couldn't do anything just yet. I had to figure something out. Gathering up what I learned from the previous conversation, I found out these few pieces of information:
The squeaky voice called the first voice 'Captain'.
The Captain seems to hate Louis.
I am on a rickety contraption surrounded by the sounds of roaring water (which would be a boat).
Apparently Louis has a gang.
Why does Louis have a gang?
Was it a bad gang?
Speaking of Louis, where was he?
I'm getting off track. Anyways, the facts I had managed to figure out could only mean one daunting, scary, and terrifying thing.
The people hovering over me were Captain Hook and Smee.
"She could be useful in taking down the boy," Hook said, "I think we should recruit her."
Smee exhaled, "we don't know where her priorities lie, sir."
"Then we should find out."
"How should we do that?"
"Simple," Hook stated, slamming his boot down, "we threaten to feed her to the sharks."
And that is when I decided I didn't want to die on a pirate ship, on an unknown land, where the FBI couldn't conduct an investigation over my disappearance. I wanted to stay very much alive.
Shooting my eyes wide open, I sat up quickly and cleared my throat.
"I'm sorry," I said bluntly, "what?"
As soon as my focus cleared, I came face to face with the two pirates who I was previously eavesdropping on.
Hook looked taller than I thought, and he was missing the general specifics that his animated alter ego had. He didn't have a handlebar mustache, a long red tail coat, or a white collared frill. Instead, he had a black leather jacket, ripped jeans, and curly brown hair that grazed against his forehead like curls on a statue.
I was so confused, I almost forgot that he had a shiny metal hook on his left hand.
"You're awake," the man grinned, leaning closer to me, "fantastic."
I glanced over to my right, where Smee was standing. Unlike Hook, he looked exactly the same. Same striped shirt, same red beanie, and same button nose.
"Hello," he said, pushing his wire glasses closer to his eyes, "welcome to The Sea Devil."
I blinked, "hello."
"What pronouns do you go by?"
"She, Her, Hers."
"So she is a girl," Hook snapped, pushing his comrade out of the way, "I haven't seen one of those since Partridge dragged those siblings all the way out here."
Furrowing my brow, I slowly pushed myself back from the Pirate in front of me. I didn't trust him one bit.
"Partridge?" I said, "where is he?"
Smee sighed, "so she does know who the boy is."
"How do you think I got here?"
"And how do you think you'll leave?" Hook said, "death by sharks or death by crocodile?"
Well...that's how it was going to be, wasn't it?
I wasn't sure what I expected from this, considering I was talking to the villains of the entire Peter Pan narrative, but I was still disappointed. Maybe I hoped they'd make a surprising exception for me.
They didn't.
"Set the plank!" Hook yelled, whipping his metal hand piece out, "she'll be walking it!"
Before I had a chance to defend myself, I felt two beefy men approach from behind me and hoist me into the air. Letting out defensive yells, I tried to prevent them from carrying me by kicking my legs.
It didn't work. Why? Because I ended up standing on a wooden plank jutting six feet out of the side of the boat, the waves crashing beneath me. As one of the pirates pointed his sword out towards me, I knew there was only one thing to do.
I was more sensible than Wendy. I knew I couldn't rely on Louis being here to catch me if I fell (he clearly ditched me). There was only one option I could take, and that was the skill of negotiation.
"Wait!" I yelled, "I have something to say!"
The man with the sword narrowed his eyes, but with a wave of Hook's hand, he lowered his weapon.
"You have two minutes," the Captain hissed, "speak."
Here's another thing.
I mentioned that negotiation was a skill, but I may have forgotten to mention that it was a skill I didn't have. I never planned on being a lawyer, and I never planned on having to fend for my life on a pirate ship.
"Do I have to die at all?" I said, holding up my hands, "I'd rather not."
Smee titled his head, his red cap almost falling off, "but you're with the Partridge boy, aren't you?"
Now, here's the third thing. I don't normally condone or support lying, but this was a life or death situation that I had to get out of.
"No," I said bluntly, lying through my teeth, "I'm not with him."
"Then how do you know him?"
"Because I'm his enemy too," I spat out, "I came here to seek revenge."
That seemed to get everyone's attention, because they stopped what they were doing to stare at me.
The rigid sway of the boat almost made me lose my balance on the wooden plank, and I stuck out my arms to help me stay in place. I saw the sharks circling below, their jaws bare and hungry.
"An enemy, you say?" Hook sneered, "do tell us why."
Now I had to come up with an explanation.
"Because he..." I started, my mind running through everything that happened in my recent memories, "pushed me out a window!"
The captain harrowed his eyes, "and?"
"And stole my family inheritance!"
"He did?"
"Every single penny," I nodded, biting my lip, "I'm here to steal it back."
Hook seemed to take this into consideration, motioning for his crew-mates to converse in a small huddle. As they all pitched in with ideas, I took another glance at the ocean below me.
I didn't want to be shark food.
After a few painstakingly long minutes, the captain cleared his throat.
"We'll help you get your money back," he said, waving his hook around, "but we have a few conditions."
I nodded my head, "anything."
"You have to join us here on the ship," he stated, "become a pirate."
"I can do that."
"And if we find out you're lying to us, you'll die."
"Nothing to worry about," I said, exhaling, "because I'm not lying."
I had everything to worry about, because I was lying. This was a nightmare, and I had to do everything I could to escape.
Glancing around the ship, I waited for Hook to respond, or at least pardon me. He still looked a little in disbelief, staring at me inquisitively. Everyone seemed gullible enough.
Thankfully the Captain finally came around.
"Fine," he said, walking away, "welcome to The Sea Devil, pirate."
