4 | You Can Fly!

I EXPECTED LOUIS to pull out a fairy from his pocket, or start chanting some sort of spell, but instead he just smiled.

That devious smile that made it obvious his hair was full of secrets. I desperately hoped that they weren't the detrimental ones.

"Don't we need pixie dust to fly?" I questioned, staring at the boy inquisitively,"or faith and trust?"

I didn't expect him to find that so hilarious. Bending over and clutching his stomach, he giggled so hard I thought he'd pop.

"Oh, no, that's so outdated," he said, laughing, "we don't need that anymore."

"Outdated?"

"Pixie dust also makes me sneeze."

I smiled, cocking a brow, "does it?"

The next time I got my hands on some pixie dust, I'd be sure to stuff some up his nose for laughing at me. How was I supposed to know the progressive society of Neverland?

Not to mention, I had enough people laughing at me at school, so it just pressed all my buttons.

"You didn't hear that from me," Louis said, grabbing my hand, "now close your eyes and think of something happy."

There were only three things that came to mind when someone said the word 'happy'.

Happy Birthday.

Happy Hogan.

And the future.

Doing as he said, I closed my eyes so all I could see was the pitch black cavern of darkness in front of me. I didn't have much to be happy for at the moment, so I was looking forward to whatever would come next.

Or whatever this Neverland had in store.

I heard Louis' voice again, but this time he sounded less demanding, "now believe."

I opened one of my eyes in confusion, "believe what?"

"That you can fly."

Closing my eyes tighter, I tried to think of what flying felt like.

How freeing, how wonderful, and how beautifully impossible it would be. I tried so hard to think of flying, that I almost forgot I was still holding Louis' hand. I wasn't sure if that was why I felt like I had butterflies traveling all around my body, but I certainly hoped it wasn't.

He was still a stranger.

And then I realized I was floating 4 inches off the ground. No wires, no strings, no invisible box. It was like I was light as a feather, letting the air caress me with it's density.

So the tingling sensation wasn't because I was holding his hand, it was because I was flying.

"Thank gosh," I said, dumbfounded, "I'm doing it!"

Louis grinned, his green cap almost falling off his head, "what did you think of?"

"Why do you want to know?"

He sent me another one of his devious smiles, winking playfully, "was it me?"

"No," I said bluntly, "absolutely not."

"Why do you keep saying that?"

"Because as fictional as this whole thing is," I sighed, patting him on the head, "you're still an unfamiliar boy who's about to fly me over to an unfamiliar island, where unfamiliar people live."

"Yeah," he nodded, "and?"

I blinked, waiting for him to throw me a sarcastic gesture, or some form of symbolism to show he was joking. Did he not hear me describe that the situation was something straight out of a horror novel?

Apparently he just didn't understand.

"Pixie Dust may be outdated," I sighed, "but so are you."

Wobbling around, I struggled to fly myself over to the window, still not used to the whole anti-gravity thing. Grabbing onto the window latch, I pushed it open and felt the chilly breeze rush past my face.

"Shall we go, then?" I said, turning my head to look at Louis.

He looked like he was about to laugh again.

"Oh, shut up," I frowned, "I've only been flying for less than a minute, of course I don't know how to do it well."

The boy flitted over to me, "I could teach you."

"Could you take me to Neverland First?"

"Absolutely," he said, before pushing me out the window.

I'm not exaggerating. Louis placed his hands on my shoulders (on purpose), shoved me out the window (on purpose), and watched as I went tumbling into the outside world (you guessed it, on purpose).

Once I was able to keep myself steady, I let out an angry gasp.

"What was that for?" I hissed, watching as the brown-haired boy floated my way, "what if I fell?"

He smirked, "then I would have saved you."

"But why did you have to push me?"

"Because that's the first step to get to Neverland," he shrugged, "be strong enough to make it there."

"And that required shoving me out my window?"

"Yes," he nodded, "if you could take a hit, I'm not worried that you'll plummet from the sky when we're already thousands of feet in the air."

I blinked, "that was horribly morbid, but okay."

Shaking my head, I gathered my wits about me, and followed after the boy. For some inexplicable reason, the sidewalks and streets looked more empty than usual.

Those that were out and about didn't even notice our shadow as we flew past.

Turning my head, I glanced at Louis to see what he was doing. He had a huge smile on his face, as if this was his favorite thing ever. Flying, I mean, not being ignored by civilians.

As minutes passed,  I realized how far away we were from my house. From the ground. From the city.

"Ready?" Louis called out.

Sapping my head back front, I realized we were approaching the second star. I should have been worried that I'd get burned into oblivion, but that didn't worry me anymore.

I was flying! Ah!

And then I was burned to a crisp.

Just kidding! I ended up hurling straight into a white blanket of light and out the other side (no, I'm not talking about the afterlife, I didn't die). Instead, I found myself floating towards a bright green island, the mountain shape reminding me of a fortune cookie.

It looked shockingly similar to the animation in the Peter Pan movie, which I found suspicious. Clear blue water, an endless amount of godlike sparkles, and about 3 rainbows spouting out of random places.

"Wow..." I said, the words escaping my lips, "it's beautiful."

Loui flew up behind me, nudging me with his shoulder, "I know, right?"

"Did it rain recently?"

The boy shook his head, "no, why?"

"There are three rainbows."

"Aren't there usually three?" He said, tilting his head.

"No, there usually aren't-"

Before I could finish my sentence, the wind picked up beneath me, and I  lost my balance. Before I could realize it, I felt myself get sucked down towards the ocean below me.

Suddenly I wasn't flying anymore. I was just falling.

"Louis!" I yelled, my arms outstretched towards the boy, "help!"

As I plummeted to what seemed like death, I felt the pressure of the wind squeeze my body until I could barely catch my breath. Even the tears seemed to be pushed out of my eyelids.

The last thing I saw was Louis bolting towards me, fear painted on his face.

And then I crashed into the water.
