Usually the government cannot take adults away from their family and place them into a foster home. Hattie, who is now technically an adult, seemed to be an exception. Based on what had happened to he over the past few years and her many relapses they thought it was best to take Hattie from the context of which it took place as a way of aiding her in her recovery.
Caroline has reported her daughter's father thinking she would get full rights over Hattie and never have to see Sirius again. However, Todd had intervened and meant that she did not get that. He twisted the story that Lily had informed them of because she believed that Caroline had the right to know about her daughter, and by doing this Hattie was taken away from everyone.
They took away her diary- the one she could talk to Charlie and Gilbert through. They took away all of her contact to her family. Hattie kicked up a storm, screaming, shouting and crying until her voice ripped through her throat and left her. She sunk into the corner of her new bedroom, her knees tucked up into her chest. This went on for days, weeks until she stopped. She had no tears to cry, she needed had no voice to talk.
Mr and Mrs Bumble, a young married couple who adored films and film making had taken her in. There was no way that Hattie could deny that they were lovely, they didn't pressure her to do anything, they checked on her and made sure she was okay and Mr Bumble showed her all of his cameras. Hattie found herself eating, sleeping and feeling much better. She was putting on weight each day and eating much more than she was in the hospital. Nothing bad could be said.
It was as if she was now free. Hattie had been cut away from all of the strings that tied her back down to her problems. She was not constantly crowded and had space to herself. Mrs Bumble helped her to cook her own food so that she knew just what she was eating and how much she was eating.
One morning the girl woke up with the sunlight pouring through the neutral coloured curtains, brightening the room around her. Hattie stretched, a groan escaping her lips and her bones cracked. There was a knock and the door edged open and Mr Bumble poked his head around it, a smile on his lips.
"Morning, sweetheart, I was just coming to wake you but I clearly was too late!" He chuckled, "Phee has the kettle on and some breakfast cooking when you're ready to come down."
Hattie grinned, "okie dokie."
Mr Bumble made his way over to the bed and perched beside the girl. "How are you feeling? We know you miss everyone and the things that your social worker has taken from you clearly meant a lot to you. We've tried getting them back but she won't let us. We're sorry, Hattie."
Hattie sighed, "I s'pose it's okay. You and Phee have been nothing but kind and generous to me. You have me living with you, you feed me and provide anything I need despite the fact that I'm so messed up. What you have done is so brave-"
"No, honey, you're the brave one. You are slowly getting over a, let's say, habit, which will take its tole on you and for you to act towards us the way you are is amazing. My mate's brother was like you a few years back and he wouldn't let anyone, especially not new people, near him. You are allowing me and my wife to get to know you and help you and for that we are thankful. We know that we can not replace your family, we could never come close, but we hope that we would be able to be classed as your friends?"
"You're way more than that! You're like a long- lost aunt and uncle!" Exclaimed Hattie as she threw her arms around the man. "Thank you for everything."
"It's our pleasure, darling," replied Mr Bumble.
"Breakfast!" Mrs Bumble's voice called up the stairs from the kitchen.
"I'll race you to the bacon!" Mr Bumble challenged as Hattie pulled away. He leaped up and raced out of the door.
"Hey that's not fair!" Hattie cried following him out.
As the pair stumbled into the kitchen barking with laughter, Mrs Bumble stood waiting with her hands on her hips and her eyebrows raised. "Now, I didn't know that we had children in this house."
"Phee, it was just a little fun-"
"Only children don't let others play. It's not fair that I wasn't invited!"
Hattie giggled as Mr Bumble kissed his wife on the cheek sweetly, "that's because you were not upstairs, love, if you were then we wouldn't be wishing for breakfast right now. It smells great, so can we now eat?"
Mrs Bumble rolled her eyes playfully, swatting her husband with a tea-towel as she motioned for Hattie to take a seat at the table. "So what do you want to do today? You know, before we go to the national park this evening."
"Hmm, I don't know. Hattie any ideas?"
Hattie shook her head, sipping her orange juice. Mrs Bumble grinned, "how about we bake some galaxy cakes to take with us?"
Hattie grinned and nodded her head. "Sounds like a plan."
"Let's eat up then and get started!"
