Never Like My Father

Enzo:

"You fight like your real father." Luke tells me as we spare together, our silver swords barley touching. "You know, the one who abandoned you."

I throw myself at my adoptive father. "You keep telling me that, but you won't tell me how to fix it."

I hated talking about my dad. Luke tells me he left my mother when she got pregnant and my mom died in childbirth. Sometimes I have dreams where she sings me to sleep, her soft voice and silver hair make my eyelids heavy. Luke lunges at me again, disarming my weapon. I throw my hands into the air in submission.

I lived on the planet Estella as a child. When you enter the planet's atmosphere you begin to age faster. I didn't go to as many schools as the other children did, I ages almost three times as fast.

"Luke." Aspen walk in on our training, her black hair sweeping at her hips. "I just got Enzo's report card. I think you two need to have a talk."

My adopted father grabs the paper from his fake girlfriend. He reads over my paper. I already know what he is reading.

"Want to explain this to me?" Luke is disappointed on my failure. "I mean...how do you get a D+ in Zodiac history but a A- in calculus?"

"You tutored me with calculus homework." I try and explain.

"That shouldn't make any difference." Luke rips the report in half. "Zodiac history is your history and there is only like three generations, four of you count yourself."

"It's just so hard." I complain.

"You have an F in appreciation of music." Luke stresses each syllable. "How is that even possible."

"The teacher hates me."

"Tell me the truth."

"That is the truth!" I kick off my shoes to change back into my normal clothing.

"His principal also called me." Aspen says.

I try my best to change my pants as quickly as possible, knowing full well what she was going to say.

"He got expelled." Aspen states.

"How old are you?" Luke demands. "Answer me!"

"Twelve!" I scream, changing my shirt.

"So this is your sixth school." Luke tells me as I slam on one of my shoes. "There are no more schools to send you to. Nowhere will accept you."

Everything I do is wrong. Why am I exactly like my real dad. Luke has reined me so well, taught me everything and I still can't pass the tests.

"The only place left is that military academy Mike went to." Aspen informs Luke.

I can't go there. Luke promised me he would never send me there unless he has not her choice. My adopted dad can do so much, he could homeschool me or put me in online courses. I won't find out where I belong if I go to the academy.

Everyone will be on my case. This is my burden for being a Zodiac legacy.

"Pack your bags Enzo." Luke snaps. "We are going to Akko."

Akko is the military research planet, not the academy. I follow my.. well.. I consider them as parents to me, down the hallway to our rooms. I quickly pack my small belongings, I have moved to a new school almost every year now. Six schools in my six years of schooling. Nowhere wants me.

I only have one book and one song on my Net-pad. I reread the book as we travel on our ship. We wait for our new rooms, I listen to that one song on repeat over and over.

I haven't seen myself in over a year. My bedroom this time has a bathroom, with a mirror.

I stare at my reflection. It's mesmerizing how much I have changed. In older pictures of me I have brown hair, which over the years has slowly changed black and now was getting white streaks at random. I felt like a zebra, no wonder why the kids all made fun of me, besides for what they already do. I am a son of a celebrity and I get picked on all the time for what my ancestors have done.

My eyes are pale blue, a blue that is far from the sky and more like a star in the night. That's the blue of my eyes, galaxies filling the colors.

"Don't act up." I tell myself. I say the same thing everyday. "Just look down and be strong."

I have kept my head up and my chin down, every time it ends the same. Pack your bags Enzo, we are leaving. I hate moving. I hate having to leave. I swear it is never my fault when I get expelled. I just always get blamed.

My clothing is the typical military training style, gray sweatpants and a maroon shirt. I close the click thing in my dog tags around my neck before I head out to the cafeteria, I take one last glance at the mirror.

My skin is a medium tone, not pale and not tan, just in between. I have no freckles or sits on my face, it's flawless as it always has been. I have one dimple in the corner of my mouth, my favorite feature about myself.

At school the next day I don't do anything, I stay down and out of sight. Believe me, I never meant to get anyone hurt.

"I am fourteen." A girl says as her crew walks by where I sit for lunch in the cafeteria. "But I am telling you, i am a lot smarter then you lot."

She has blond hair with red tips. She wear the typical uniform, gray sweatpants with a red tank top and dog tags. Her hair is swiped up into a tight ponytail.

"It's never going to work." The boy who walks next her her states. "Besides, we have no guns and we barley know how to use them."

"Relax Simeon." Another girl who looks almost exactly like him says. "Every disadvantage we have had in the simulation we have managed to win every time. I'm sure we could do this."

They looked like twins, dark skin and hair with green eyes. Both standing in the same position with one hand in their hip. Their uniforms were similar but with blue shirts instead of a red tank top.

"Let's take this spark and fan it into a flame!" The first girl exclaims. "We are meant to be able to vote and live our lives independently. I mean, the Zodiac family has reduced itself to injecting us with their DNA to try and give us powers."

"Ray." Simeon walks over to her. "It's never going to work. You know Mike won't ever let us get past the walls."

"That's why we need a revolution." Ray turns to her crew. "The news will be everywhere when they find out the rebels are attacking from the inside."

"The rebel team is dead." The girl who looks like Simeon exclaims. "It died with Azun Watcher. You will die too Ray."

"Alisha relax." Ray kicked her boot. "Mike loves you two, both top class snippets and assassins, and I will gladly die if we to be free to act on our choices."

I never noticed the two other boys besides then.

"Ray is right." One of them says, he has black hair, the same color as the black stripes in mine. His eyes however are different, whatever Mike is doing, it's having a strange effect on his eye color. One eye was brown and another was blue. He wore a yellow shirt with his pants. "Back on my planet our leader Oberon would just go about slaughtering whoever he felt like. I am actually considering this as being better then what I had, but freedom sounds legit."

"I agree with Torrent." The other boy states, he wears a green shirt. His hair is bright blond and his eyes were dark blue, he looked like an idiot. "I was an Alchemist's apprentice back on my planet and I learned quite a few things but because I was technically considered a slave they wouldn't let me pursued my career choice. It sounds back but I want to defeat the army that accepted me as one of their own."

"Hudson is right." Alisha sighs. "We need to get ourselves out of here and act like rebels. We will get everyone a free future."

"Yes!" Ray shouts. "Wait will we get an armada together! Mike won't know what hit him!"

I stand up and rush into their little group conversation. I agree with every word they have said, but there are guards everywhere and any talk about unions will get them expelled or worst.

"Geniuses." I hiss. "Would you please whisper when you are planning to attack the leader of this base. I'm totally with you on all you have to say but you need to talk in private and in secret. Or elder you will get shot by one of those guards."

They glance at where I point. Two guards hold guns in the walk way, checking each person who enters and exits the cafeteria.

"I like you kid." Ray smiles. "But we have a team here, we got Simeon and Alisha, trained assassins that have been in many missions for Mike. Hudson is the top scientist here, he knows everything about planets-"

"Photosynthesis." Hudson interrupts.

"Whatever." Ray shrugs it off. "Torrent is the best engineer here, he built this whole planet. It's made of metal not of stone."

"What are you saying?" I ask.

"I am saying give me a gun and point at what guard to shoot at!" Ray shouts. "Then let's go!"

"Shh!" I try and stop her, but the words had escaped and the guards rush over and grab her, dragging her to who knows where.

After the guards leave it's only two minutes until my step dad Luke walks in. His eyes slow to anger but his voice told the tale as he yelled at me in front of the whole school.

"What were you thinking?" Luke screams. "Mike is your uncle! How dare you disgrace him!"

"Where did the girl go?" I ask, just out of curiosity.

"Banished to earth." Luke stated before leaving the room. "And that same fair awaits you if you continue this ruthless behavior."

Luke always called my real dad ruthless and childish. I swear I am a good kid at school. I was a good son to Luke. I am not like my father.

I am a well behaved, but I swear the teachers all hate me. Nobody ever takes my side, it's all because I am a Zodiac. Everyone is hating the royal family lately since their selfish acts. All I ever do is take the blame, even if it wasn't me!

I don't know what my power is, Luke has a theory that I have one, but it hasn't shown yet. I don't think it ever will. I try and meditate at night to discover my abilities. I haven't found anything, I just feel normal.

Every time Luke asks me if I feel a change inside myself, I always answer no. This is why I am good for nothing. I am no good to anyone.

My real dad, was the biggest jerk dad. He was never here and my only real family, my mother, has vanished into death and is only a remedy if my mind. She sings me a lullaby.

I will be at this school for less then a year. My memories are all I hold, I don't need a family, I never had one. I have no friends either, nobody wants to be friends with the bad boy.

"Aron you are the worst sharp shooter I have ever seen." A girl with curly brown hair walks down the hallway with another boy.

"Well siblings are usually similar." The boy, probably Aron, snapped back.

"I am the best shooter on our squad." The girl says.

"Whatever Stella." Aron sighs.

"Hey." I say, trying to make some friends, they continue to walk by me.

"Hey." Aron stops, his sister rolls her eyes as he does. "What's your name?"

"Enzo Nathaniel Zodiac." I introduce myself. "And you are?"

"Aron Aries Zodiac." The boy shakes hands with me.

"Aron!" His sister snaps.

"Oh I'm sorry." Aron apologizes. "This is Stella Scorpio Zodiac."

"No!" Stella stomps her foot. "He is the new kid."

"Oh!" Aron gasps, taking a step back from me. "We gotta get going-"

"Sure." I sigh as they walk off.

Like I said, nobody wants to ever be my friend.

This planet base is insane. I can't believe all these people are my step-siblings. I hear more rumors on Mike injecting everyone with DNA from the Zodiac family. They say it makes them stronger in combat as they fight. Luke calls the kids here Genius Zodiacs. Implying that they were experimented upon to be like the legacy family.

I am a half-blood Zodiac, by all definition I should be better then everyone. But once again I fail at everything I do.

The hallways I walked through had tons of people crowding it, but nobody dared touch me, I could walk anywhere and they would clear a path. I feel like more of an outcast then a point.

It's not until some girl doesn't notice me and I accidentally run into her, that I realize the kids were right to avoid me.

"Are you okay?" I ask, grabbing her bare shoulder.

She screams out in pain and drops to the floor. I don't know what to do, I freeze in the spot as another kid runs over to examine what I did. She runs a quick diagnostic with a device she pulls from her pocket.

"Where's her Zodiac power?" The doctor girl asks. "I examined her the other day and she had fire boiling inside her, now it's juts gone."

I stare at my surrounding peers, each one steps away from me. They must think I am a monster, heck, I think I am a monster.

I do what any monster does, I run.

"Pack your bags Enzo." Luke states after I tell him what I did. "I don't have any other choice. You are coming to Francium with me to meet Mike."

"I didn't do anything. I didn't mean to hurt anyone." I beg as Luke throws a pair of gloves at me. The gloves are made of rubber cloth and stretch up my wrists. "I want to be a good kid!"

Good one Enzo! You love a good joke. I say to myself.

Luke flys us over to another planet, Malison, it's one of the biggest planet in this galaxy. I believe this is where Mike and the other twelve live, including my rotten father.

Nobody ever takes my side. I will get rat out again, then I will have to move onto another school I can get kicked out of.

"I'm so glad Ames Zodiac is our leader." I hear a man say as Luke leads me down the busy street.

"I still can't believe Mike lost." The women beside the man says.

The sun is starting to go down, dusk is beginning to come, the shadows are long, this brings more people out for the enjoyable night.

"Did you hear what the military base is being used for?" I hear two women talk to one another.

"Yes!" The second women gasps. "A scientific research center, they are experimenting with DNA, right?"

"Correct!" The first women states. "They are experimenting on children."

This is the third time I had heard about this DNA crap. I don't even see what's the big deal. I get the feeling that I am going to find out soon and I will get the blame somehow.

Luke leads me into a big building, I recognize it from the papers. This is the building the leaders of Malison work in, the tallest floor is solely dedicated to the highest power.

"Keep up Enzo." Luke snaps.

"Yes Dad." I rush along.

The elevator ride is tall, we stand in silent the whole way.

"Luke." Mike greeted us as we entered into his office. "So glad your back."

"This is Enzo." Luke introduced me. "Can you help me examine him, I not quite sure what his power is yet."

"Absolutely." Mike smiled, pulling up a chair. "Sit."

I sat down in the fine carved wood chair. This office was not the main office that the absolute leader used, but this one must be right below it.

Each bookshelf was carved from timber, probably by hand, it must of taken hours-days to do.

"Say ah!" Mike told me.

"Ah!" I open my mouth, he inserts a stick to swab the back of my throat.

"Why did you bring him here?" Mike asked.

I amazed me that Mike and Luke were brothers, they looked nothing alike. Mike has blond hair and blue eyes with tan muscles skin. While my adopted father, Luke, had black hair with no volume and green eyes. His skin was pale with a slight pink tone.

"I can't figure it out." Luke sighs. "I have tried everything to see what activates his power, but the other day all he did was touch someone and-"

"What?" Mike stoped his focus on me.

"I don't know what he did." Luke looked away from me. "But the girl he touched, her power is gone. There is not trace it ever was there."

"Interesting." Mike skinned a light in my eyes.

"Anything?" Luke leans over to look at me.

"I'm not seeing that he has power." Mike concluded his examination of me. "I can see has has reached maturity and I don't think he can have power after that. Are you sure it was him? I would love to get my hands on someone who has the ability to steal tower power."

"I have him wearing those gloves just for safe keeping." Luke pointed at me.

Mike walked over to his telephone. "Get me that boy, Hudson Cancer."

"What are you doing?" I asked, wondering why he needed that blond boy I meet back on the base.

A guard exits the elevator with the kid. He is exactly who I remember him to be, blond hair spiked in his face and bright blue eyes.

"Enzo take off your gloves." Mike directs me, I obey.

"You're that kid!" Hudson shouts. "You stole Steff's power!"

"I didn't steal anything." I shook my head, my gloves laid on the floor.

"You did!" Hudson shouted.

"Go touch him." Mike directed, I obeyed.

"Stop!" Hudson shouted. "I haven't done anything wrong!"

"Enzo." Luke spake. "Just ignore him, touch him and see what happens."

I walked towards the boy, he tried to run but the guard held him still.

"What's this kids power?" Luke whispered to Mike.

"Photosynthesis." Mike nodded. "Go on Enzo!"

I continued walking with my hand outstretched. My fingers touched his bare skin, I felt nothing, but Hudson screamed, kicking his legs like he was having a heart attack. Then he passed out, the guard dropped him at my feet.

"Excellent." Mike smiled. "Luke you have adopted the perfect weapon."

Luke smiled, staring at me with wonder.

I kept my head down at the kid I just destroyed, I placed my chin up. There was a mirror that took up an entire wall, the frame made of embers.

I face myself, black and white hair with faded blue eyes, my chin pointed and noes short. I have grown into a man.

Right next to the mirror is a painting of my real father. He has brown hair and blue eyes. We were so alike and so dislike in every way.

Nobody cares for me. I look nothing like my father. I am not my father, I am not a monster. But I can only hear the other kid's voice's in my mind. Monster. You are a monster.

I have bad grades and a bad reputation. I remember when I got expelled from my third school and Luke gave me a good spanking. Aspen is the closest thing I have to a mother, she never talks to me and she only talks to me about my grades. I have no love from Aspen or Luke. I have changed homes so many times I can't even remember what home feels like.

I see my father's portrait next to my reflection, we have he same smile.

I have no mother. I killed her when I was born. I am a murderer, killing my own mother. I guess this is always what I was meant for, I killed the day I was born and I will kill again. This is what I was born for.

"You stole it!" Luke smiled at me. "I'm proud of you Enzo."

"I never stole anything." I whispered. "I didn't hurt anyone. I didn't mean to."

"You are good." Mike states. "A good boy, who is worth far more then any Zodiac has ever been worth."

"You will make the galaxy tremble." Luke smiled, throwing my gloves at me. "Now let's go home."

I am a good boy. I am a good kid. I have just had a bad life. Now I can change all that.

My father looks at me through the painting. He is the one I envied the most. I have one chance to prove I am good enough to stand by he Zodiac title. I need to destroy the Zodiac legacy.

I have now been to seven schools in six years.

There are 96,00 people on that base with Zodiac powers. Then there are the original twelve. Azun Watcher has already died and Vestry has been banished to earth.

I only want me and Luke to be the last Zodiac's in the galaxy. My mind flows with ways to make it like that. I want to have a father, I want Luke to be my father. In order to do that I need all other distractions gone.

I am good enough to be somewhere, I won't get expelled from this new school, if they ever let me attend another.

Luke lead me down the hallways and down the elevator. I watch the guards and Mike banish Hudson to somewhere. The portal flashes him away, I can't help but feel bad that I did this to him.

"You are going to blow everyone away." Luke tells me.
