Never Human

Nathaniel:

"Vestry!" I run into my brother's shop.

The walls are covered in cob webs as spiders infest my brother's once active home. Dust covers every machine and tool in this place.

This doesn't make any sense. I was just here last week. At least I think I was. I run my fingers across the table and get a think layer of dust on my skin. I flick off the piece and continue to move through the abandoned shop.

"Vestry?" My voice echoes across the room, the only sound in this place. "Vestry, I have questions that I don't think anyone else can answer. They are all talking behind my back like they have a secret that I can not know. Vestry?"

I jump as a rat darts across the floor, knocking a box down, parts spill out, banging across the ground. I rush over to take a look.

Inside the box there are plans, parts and tools. I examine the hard drives and wires, they are nothing I had ever seen Vestry work with before. On the plans, both Azun and Vestry sighed the bottom. They were in on this together, without me.

I'm not a genius when it comes to mechanics, but I can see that Vestry must of been trying to build some sort of robot... with organs. He drew each vial organ and how to avoid it with wires. The rest of the organs, he states, could be removed. He planed to put a hard rive in the brain, along with the normal brain.

It's like he was creating a cyborg.

A cyborg that if the memory would get wiped, or the heart would get stopped, the half human-computer hybrid could reboot itself and use a back up hard drive to live.

A back up memory. On the notes it states that for a Zodiac to possess this hardware in their system, that person would have to give up their powers.

Vestry couldn't just give up his powers. Could he? That's impossible. If he did, he wouldn't be a Zodiac and he wouldn't be human.

I place everything back into the cardboard box and race out of the dry dead shop. I close the door and sit on the stairs outside, drowning in my own thoughts.

Things just aren't adding up. It looks like that shop has been abandoned for years, but I was just there the other day a few weeks ago. How long was I in that coma? Why won't anyone tell me anything? What was that mysterious vision I keep experiencing?

My mind flashes to Vestry: "I will find you." Vestry moaned a whisper. "He can't take away my memories." Vestry held out a piece of a hard drive to me. "I am not fully human."

The vision leaves as quickly as it came. I am panting. What is keeping me from seeing the rest? I am only getting puzzle pieces, I can not see the whole picture.

"Nathaniel." Dustan runs over to me, he is sweaty, like he has been running around all night. "I have been looking for you everywhere."

"Dustan, can I ask you a question?" I stand up beside my brother.

"Sure." Dustan wipes the sweat from his face, glistening in the moonlight.

"Are you keeping a secret from me?"

"A secret? No!"

"You are lying." I stare at him. "Why won't you tell me?"

Dustan doesn't answer, he looks up at the stars. "Nathaniel, you have been working so hard. Why don't you take a break with me?"

"Take a break?" I gasp. "Why don't you answer me?"

"We can head up to the mountains." Dustan suggests. "Stay at the family cabin, there is a lake with canoes."

"No!" I yell at him. "Why can't you answer me? Where is Azun? Where is Vestry? Why is Ames all of a sudden not drunk and nice to me? Why is everyone so mature all of a sudden? Why do I keep seeing a burnt down barn? How long was I in that coma? Answer me!"

"I can't!" Dustan screams back. A lady across the street hurries into a shop, avoiding our conflict. "I can't scratch the wall."

"You are your wall!" I shout, more people flee, crossing the street to avoid us. "Ames was saying the same thing: don't scratch the wall, he is scratching his wall. What the freak does that mean?"

"Nathaniel." Dustan placed his hand on my shoulder. "Take a break."

"No! You take a break!" I throw his hand aside and storm off down the street and back home.

I find out that night that Dustan, Jasper and Larkin leave to the cabin. The only remaining siblings on my side are Ames and I.

I should of taken a break. I find myself wandering down the street each day and night from work to a certain house to see a certain girl.
