Too Late

"Kaitlyn! God it's so fucking hot." Jack muttered the last part wearily, wiping more sweat off of his glistening forehead and using the collar of his sweat soaked shirt to somewhat cool him down.

The sun was beating down on him and Mark like a heat lamp, the air humid with no breeze and the bright blue sky cloudless.

It felt like a desert compared to rainy Ireland.

"Kaitlyn!" Mark yelled her name, his voice cracking slightly since his throat was dry.

"Here." Jack handed him the little bit of water he had let in his water bottle he took with him before they left. Mark nodded in appreciation and tipped his head back, draining the contents in a couple of gulps before tossing the bottle off to the side.

"So...this is fun." Jack remarked sarcastically to fill the empty silence around them.

"Oh yeah, having a fantastic time." Mark scoffed with a small eye roll.

They both paused in disbelief when they spotted a familiar beside them on the other side of the road.

It was a McDonalds.

"I swear they're everywhere." Mark chuckled as he used his last burst of strength to jog over to the restaurant and open the door, allowing Jack inside before he followed him in.

Kaitlyn was lying asleep on the counter, a cup of water lying beside her.

"Kaitlyn!" Mark walked over and shook her shoulder, relieved to see her eyes flutter open to look at him.

"Where's Tom and Vince?" Kaitlyn asked as she abruptly sat up before hopping off of the counter.

"They're both at the gas station, same as everyone else." Jack assured her.

"C'mon, we gotta get back to them." Jack added, starting to walk towards the door. He abruptly froze mid step when he saw a black ski masked man walking towards them.

Mark instantly stepped ahead of everyone protectively with his fists raised, ready to defend his friends.

The man removed his mask and Mark was surprised that he recognized the man.

Dustin.

"Listen, I don't have much time before they find out I'm gone, but the Shadows know where the gas station you guys are staying at is, they're heading towards it now." Dustin explained hastily.

"How can you be working with those monsters?" Jack demanded as he took a step forward so he was standing by Mark.

"It's not by choice, they're threatening to burn down my house and kill me. Please, just come with me, I have a car parked out front that I can use to drive you three far away from here." Dustin pleaded.

"We're not leaving our friends." Mark shook his head.

"You really are your father's son." Dustin smiled sadly, clapping a hand on Mark's shoulder.

"How 'bout I take you three to the gas station then since you guys seem set on going whether I take you or not?" Dustin offered.

"Deal." Mark smirked, following him with Jack and Kaitlyn in tow to his black Jeep Wrangler.

A couple moments later they reach the gas station. Thankfully, there were no other cars in sight.

"Thanks." Mark nodded gratefully as he hopped out with the others and ran inside, ready to warn the others.

Ash was already there waiting for them with all of his men.
