~ 3 ~
Sunhee rushed downstairs, feeling a bit flustered. She hoped Kevin was right, that Mark was oblivious about her feelings towards him. She didn't want him to know. She didn't want things to be awkward.
She scanned the room, looking for him, and when she caught site of him she started walking through the crowd towards him.
She felt so out of place, amongst all his rich friends. She didn't even really know any of them. There were some who she saw a couple times a year, some who came to all of Mark's events. But most of them, she couldn't remember.
Most of them weren't even close. They were just there.
"Hey!" Mark said, putting an arm around her shoulder. "You were gone for a while."
"I bumped into someone," she explained, biting back her smile as she remembered hitting Kevin with the door. Hopefully that wouldn't leave a bruise.
"We're going that have dinner, and then there'll be more dancing," Mark said, gesturing towards where clusters of kids were already dancing. "That's alright with you?"
"Of course."
"Can I reserve a dance with you?" Johnny asked her.
Sunhee laughed. "I'll have to think about it," she teased, following the two of them to one of the tables set up.
Immediately, staff members rushed over to take their orders.
She shot a sidelong glance at Mark as he ordered. It was so strange, hearing people call him "sir" or "mister". No matter how many times she went to his house, she could never get used to it. But he seemed unbothered by it.
She supposed that if she'd grown up that way for so long, she'd be used to it too.
"What would you like, Miss?"
"Um... I'll have the same thing Mark's having," she said, not really hungry. Her mother had insisted she'd eat something before going to the party, claiming that then if she didn't like any of the food, at least she wouldn't starve.
She did that every time before coming to his house. She wasn't sure what he ate on a daily basis, but the food his family served to guests was way too fancy for her.
Sunhee looked around the room, taking in its magnificence and observing the groups of people on the dance floor. She half wished that Johnny would ask her to dance now. She even more so wished that Mark would.
Her eyes scanned the room, observing everyone, until they caught on one person.
Kevin.
He was sitting alone in a corner, reading a book.
Sunhee couldn't help feeling a twinge of sympathy. It must be hard, watching kids his age partying while he had to work for them. In a way, she felt like they were both outsiders in the scene. Not rich. Don't really know anyone. She felt like she could relate to him the most out of everyone in the room.
Sunhee got up, leaving Mark and Johnny and walking over to him.
"Hey," she said, sitting down next to him. "What are you doing?" she asked, peeking over his shoulder.
She couldn't help it, she gasped.
Because he'd been drawing, not reading.
And his artwork was beautiful.
He'd drawn the dance scene, and though it was unfinished, he somehow had been able to capture it's beauty, the quiet magical nature the whole house gave off.
"You like it?" he asked, smiling proudly.
Sunhee could only nod. "It's beautiful," she sighed, leaning closer and examining the details. She looked back and forth from the real scene to the picture. He'd captured even the tiniest of details.
"If I could get closer, I could make it better," Kevin said, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
"Why can't you sit at one of the closer tables then? Instead of here... on the floor."
"Because even if I'm on break, I'm still a worker here. I can't just sit at the tables meant for guests. I can't just go to the middle of the dance floor."
"Why not?" she asked, getting up. She held out her hand to him. "You can if you dance with me."
Kevin laid his book on the floor and took her hand, standing up. His eyes were sparkling with mischief as he stepped closer to her, taking her other hand.
"Shall we dance?" he whispered.
