~ 25 ~

Sunhee followed Mark up to his room, her heart pounding as she wondered what he was going to say.

Suddenly, she wondered if it would be a confession.

That thought didn't bring the surge of happiness and hope that she would have expected. Instead, she felt dread. Her heart felt heavy. It hurt.

And she realized something.

On the walk upstairs, she realized that Mark would always hold a piece of her heart. He was her friend, her best friend, and would always be. She loved him, of course she did. They'd known each other their whole lives.

But maybe her long-time crush hadn't been a crush on Mark. Maybe she hadn't necessarily liked him, maybe she just liked their old memories together. Maybe she just missed that and wanted it again. Maybe she just wanted things to go back to the way they were before he got rich.

She didn't like him.

That realization hit her with absolute certainty as soon as she stepped into his room.

"Sunhee," he said, turning her to face him. He kept his hands on her shoulders and looked at her for a moment. "We've been friends for a long time. And I-"

"You're a great friend," she interrupted quickly, smiling at him. She wasn't sure if he was going to confess or not, but she certainly didn't want him to. "I hope we can be friends forever."

When she saw his face fall, she wanted to cry. She wanted to hug him and apologize.

Because she'd never wanted to hurt him.

"You like Kevin, don't you?" he asked after a long moment.

She smiled sadly. "I do," she whispered. "Is it that obvious?" she asked, remembering how she'd asked Kevin the same thing, the first time they'd met. Only then, she'd still liked Mark, and that's who they'd been talking about.

"Just a little," he said softly. Sadly. "But it's also obvious that he likes you too."

"I hope so," she said, feeling her cheeks flush pink.

"You should confess," he told her. "Before it's too late. I made that mistake once and I don't want it to happen to you too."

She got the feeling he was talking about her, about right now.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm sorry that you got hurt. But there's someone out there for you, someone perfect. Just wait and see."

Mark gave her a small smile. "I know. Now go. Go confess to the love of your life."
