Saving Grace

Christine looked over and saw the positive pregnancy test. She then saw Stevie reaction and she wrapped an arm around Stevie.

"Oh my god." Stevie whispered.
"Wow, well, this is great!" Christine said, trying to be positive.
Stevie shook her head and turned away from Christine.

Stevie threw the test away in the small trashcan that was in the bathroom then she made her into her bedroom. Christine followed her.

Stevie sat down on her bed and said. "Is it really though?"
Christine sat down beside her and began. "Stevie..."
"I'm still adjusting to being divorced. I'm still grieving for my son." Stevie interrupted. "I had an affair with my ex husband! John and I's friendship may have deteriorated, but...but I wouldn't wish for him to feel the same pain we felt. When this news comes out, John will feel that exact pain." Stevie's tears rolled down her cheeks. "I don't know what to do."

Christine didn't say anything; she knew the pain of being cheated on so, she knew where Stevie was coming from. She sighed then held onto to Stevie for comfort.

They stayed in that position for a while then Stevie pulled away. "I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor so...so they can check if everything is okay. Will you take me, please?"
"Of course, Stevie." Christine replied.

After making an appointment with her doctor, Stevie laid in bed, laying on her side. She stared at the wall holding onto the stuffed penguin.

She started to be in denial; maybe she wasn't pregnant and the test she took gave her a false positive. Tomorrow she would find out for sure.

A knock on her door interrupted her thoughts. She peered over and Christine peeked inside.

"Stevie, you have a visitor." Christine said.
"Who is it?" Stevie said as she sat up.
"Hey, Stevie, How your feeling?" Tom said as he walked into the room.

Christine smiled then walked away to give Tom and Stevie some time alone. She saw how Tom looked at Stevie and she could tell that Tom wanted more of romantic relationship with Stevie. She hoped that Stevie would be open to the idea.

"Hi, Tom." Stevie said as she adjusted herself to sit up against her many pillows. "I'm feeling the same. But, I have a doctors appointment tomorrow, so...so I should get to the bottom of what is going on. What are those?"
"Oh!" Tim chuckled. "Sorry, I brought these for you."

Tom sat down beside her then handed Stevie some flowers in a vase with a card that said Get Well Soon. Stevie smiled and smelled the flowers.

"Thank you so much, Tom." Stevie said. "This is very sweet of you."

Stevie placed the flowers on her nightstand and turned back to Tom. She looked at him and couldn't help but become emotional.

Tom has always been a great friend to her and when she would have her moments, he was there by her side. At Dylan's funeral, along with Lindsey, Tom was there giving her the comfort she needed.

Stevie's tears rolled down her cheeks and her head bowed. Tom noticed her tears and reached over then wiped her tears away with his thumb. He then gently caressed her cheek.

"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked.
"Everything!" Stevie sobbed then she lunged into Tom's arms.

Tom didn't know what was going on with Stevie but, he held onto her tight and let her cry her heart out.  He didn't say anything. He just rocked her gently back and forth as if she were a small child.

Suddenly, Stevie pulled away and covered her mouth. She then bolted up from her bed and rushed to bathroom. She made it just in time and she vomited into the toilet bowl.

Tom was truly concerned and he followed Stevie to the bathroom. He saw her hugging the toilet bowl.

He walked over to a cabinet and found a washcloth. He then walked over to the sink and turned on the water. He put the cloth under the water to soak then he squeezed the water out so it could stay damp.

Tom then folded it and walked over to Stevie who was dry heaving now. He bent down, pulled her hair back then with the washcloth, he wiped Stevie's forehead.

"Tom..." Stevie said weakly. "Don't look at me! I look awful."
"Oh, hush. You look fine." He said gently. "I'm your best friend and I want to help you."

Stevie closed her eyes as she reached over to flush the toilet. Once she did, she sat back against the wall. Tom followed and sat down next to her.

He handed her the washcloth and said. "Stevie, maybe I should take you to an emergency room? This has gone on long enough."
Stevie sighed and shook her head. "No. I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow. I...I already know what's wrong."
Tom furrowed his eyebrows and asked. "What is it?"

Stevie took a deep breath; she decided to trust Tom with this secret.

"I'm...I'm pregnant, Tom." Stevie said with a shaky voice. "I took a pregnancy test before you got here. It was positive."

Stevie felt like a broken faucet; the tears just kept rolling down her cheeks.

"I'm scared, Tom." Stevie sniffled. "A part of me wants to be happy about this baby. But...the other part of me just can't seem to find that happiness. Also, I'm scared to tell the father. Maybe I shouldn't tell him."

Stevie was now thinking out loud. Tom has always been her confidant and she knew she could trust him.

Stevie sighed then began to stand up. Tom helped her up and as she went over to brush her teeth, Tom walked out of the bathroom.
He sat on her bed and waited for her.

When she walked out of the bathroom, Tom said. "Let me take to your appointment tomorrow. I want to be there for you."
"Thank you, but, Christine is taking me." Stevie replied as she sat on her bed.

Tom chewed the inside of his cheek and bravely said. "Stevie, I care about you very much. We've been through a lot all these years." He looked into her eyes and continued. "I'm going to be honest. I've always had feelings for you but, because you were married I respected that and I was more than happy to be your friend. Now...now, that you are divorced, I want to tell you that I am in love with you, Stephanie."

Stevie stared wide eyed at Tom; she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Stevie shook her head and said. "This is too much. Maybe...maybe you should go."

Tom knew it was a risk of losing his friendship with Stevie, but he couldn't keep his feelings hidden anymore.

"Okay. I'll give you some space." Tom said. "I know you are going through a lot right now. We don't have to jump into a romantic relationship. That's not why I told you. I just...I just thought you should know. Stevie, I'm always going to be your best friend first. Call me when you're ready."

Tom kissed Stevie's cheek and then he was gone.

Stevie sat there stunned; Tom had feelings for her. Stevie knew the last thing she needed was to jump into a relationship.

She laid on her bed for hours thinking about Tom. She needed her friend by her side, so she decided to call him the next day after her appointment to talk to him about how she felt.

The next day, Stevie saw her doctor, Dr. Amanda Edwards. It was confirmed that Stevie was indeed pregnant. She was seven weeks.

Stevie cried when she saw the tiny blueberry sized being on the screen of the ultrasound machine. She cried more when she heard the heartbeat. Christine was with her the whole time.

After Stevie's checkup, Dr. Edwards led them to her office to explain that because of Stevie's age, she would be keeping a close eye on Stevie and the baby.

Dr. Edwards then told Stevie that everything looked good at the moment and there was nothing to worry about. She then prescribed Stevie some prenatal vitamins and a few more medication to ensure Stevie a smooth pregnancy.

Once Stevie was out of the doctors office, Christine drove them home.

Stevie then went up to her room and called Tom. He arrived twenty minutes later.

"Tom...I love you. You're one of my closest friends and...I need you now more than ever." Stevie said as she and Tom sat in the living room. "But, as far as a romantic relationship..." she sighed then continued. "I am sorry but I cannot give you that. At least, not now. Can you just be here for me as my friend?"
Tom smiled and said. "It's okay, Stevie. As long as we have our friendship intact then, I don't need anything more. Of course, I'll be here for you. I'm not going anywhere."
Stevie smiled softly and replied. "Thank you for understanding."

Tom then asked how Stevie's appointment went. Stevie told him what the doctor said then showed him the ultrasound photos.

Tom smiled wide and said. "Congratulations, Stevie."
"Thank you, Tom." Stevie said. "I'm still afraid of what the next few months are going to bring but...I know that I already love this baby with all my heart."

After hearing the baby's heartbeat, Stevie in that moment decided to actually be happy about this new life growing inside her womb.

Dylan would always be in heart and, yes, she was still grieving, but she knew she needed to be strong for this new little miracle. This baby was truly Stevie's saving grace.

I wasn't planning on bringing in Tom for this story but, as I wrote the chapters, writing him in just happened.

Not sure if they'll end up together or not. That's to be determined, lol.

I hope you all are still enjoying this story! More to come soon.
