Learning To Fly

The next morning, Christine woke up with a hangover but, she was determined to be the mother her girls deserved.

She took a quick shower then found some aspirin for her headache and took it. She got dressed then made her way the kitchen where she made a pot of coffee.

While she waited for the coffee to be done, she got out ingredients to make pancakes. She thought it was the safest thing to make right now, otherwise she probably would have vomited due to the smell of any other food.

She prepared the mix then heard the coffee machine turn off. She quickly made herself a cup and drank it. She then made herself a second cup to drink with ease. She was hoping that this would help with her hangover.

Christine then began to cook and she was humming a song as she did so. She was lost in thoughts of her two daughters and thinking in just a month they would be eighteen years old.

She remembered when she found out she was expecting and how she and John were beyond excited. Christine didn't ever think she would become a mother and finding out she was pregnant made her the happiest woman on earth. She remembered felling them kick and move around to their first birthday and now she was seeing all of her memories of her girls flash before her eyes.

She stopped humming as she thought about the last five months. She shook her head at herself then promised herself that she would do better.

Back in the entertainment room, Amy stirred and soon she opened her eyes. She yawned and stretched, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

She looked over and saw her sister and Stevie still sleeping. She then caught the scent of pancakes in the air.

A few seconds later, Emma opened her eyes and looked at her sister.

"Morning." Emma said groggily.
"Morning." Amy said. "Someone's making pancakes"
"Let's go see!" Emma said. "I'm starving."

They stand up and Emma asks. "Should we wake aunt Stevie?"
Amy shook her head. "Let's let her sleep." She said.

Amy grabbed the blanket and pulled it over Stevie then both girls kissed Stevie's cheek. They then rushed to the kitchen to see who was cooking breakfast. They thought it was Karen because they knew their mother wouldn't wake up early. They gotten used to not swing her in the mornings.

They stopped at the doorway of the kitchen and were shocked to see their mother cooking.

"Good morning girls." Christine said with smile. "Breakfast is almost ready."
"Morning Mom." Emma and Amy said in unison.

They walked over to her and hugged her; they were happy to see their mother awake early on a Saturday. In the last five months, it hadn't been that way.

The twins then told their mother about their movie night with Stevie.

Christine then served them some pancakes, and saved Stevie some for when she woke up then she sat down with her girls at the kitchen table.

"Emma, Amy..." Christine said as she leaned forward on the table, her hands cradling her cup of coffee. "I want to apologize for these last few months of not being the mother you both deserve. I've...I've have not been handling the divorce very well and...and I lost sight of what matters most." Christine had tears rolling down her cheeks. "Which is the both of you. You both are my most greatest gifts life has given me. I'm so sorry girls. I'm sorry. I love you both so much!"

Emma and Amy stood up and walked over to their mother and hugged her. Christine held her girls close and sobbed.

"We love you too, mommy." Amy said.
Emma nodded and said. "With all our hearts."
Christine pulled away and smiled through her tears and said. "Oh girls, I promise from here on out, I am going to change and I am going to be there for the both of you. I don't want to miss another moment of your lives."

Stevie had woken up and made her way towards the kitchen, having smelled the aroma of coffee. She walked in and saw the twins in a group hug with Christine. She smiled and tears appeared in her eyes. She was happy that Christine was with her girls but she was also sad that she didn't have her children close by any more. Sara of course was at school and Dylan, was still lying in a hospital bed in a coma.

Christine and the girls pulled away and saw Stevie standing leaning in the doorway.

"Good morning ladies." Stevie said as she wiped her tears away and smiled. She walked over to the coffee pot and served herself some coffee.
"Good morning Nicks." Christine said as she stood up to get Stevie a plate of pancakes.
"Morning aunt Stevie." The twins said in unison.

Christine stood beside Stevie and asked. "Are you okay?" She noticed Stevie's tears and she could tell Stevie wasn't herself.
"Yes. I'm okay." Stevie said as she took a sip of her coffee. "I just...I just miss Sara and Dylan. I'm going to visit him today."

Christine gave Stevie a small smile and a hug.

"I'll drop you off if you want." Christine said.
Stevie shook her head and said. "No. Karen is driving me up. You stay and spend time with your girls. Have fun."
"Alright love." Christine said with another hug then they both joined Emma and Amy at the table.

They enjoyed their breakfast together and the atmosphere returned to a much more light hearted mood.

Later that evening, Stevie sat beside Dylan's bedside holding his hand. Tears rolling down her cheeks.

When Karen had dropped her off at the hospital, Dylan's doctor, Dr. Edwards gave Stevie some news.

Dylan had contracted pneumonia; they were giving him antibiotics but his immune system was weak.

Dr. Edwards didn't want to sugar coat anything so he was very forward with Stevie yet gentle.
It was now in God's hands and now they just had to sit back and wait.

After hearing this information, Stevie called Lindsey to tell that he needed to come to the hospital.

Stevie hadn't seen or spoken to Lindsey in months. She didn't want to see him now but, she needed to put her feelings aside and do what's best for her child. Dylan needed his father by his side in a moment like this.

Now here they were, both Lindsey and Stevie sat on each side of Dylan's bed holding his hand. They were both quiet, each lost in their own thoughts.

Stevie stared at her son's face and remembered the times when Dylan would get sick as a child. He would always wanted to be comforted by his mother.

*Dylan, Five years old*

"Mommy...I don't feel good." Dylan said as he walked into his parents bedroom holding his stuffed penguin.

Stevie walked over to Dylan and got down to his level. She felt his forehead and felt how warm he was.

"Let's go take your temperature." She said as she lifted Dylan into her arms.

She carried him into her bathroom and sat him on the counter as she went into her medicine cabinet and pulled out a thermometer.

Stevie placed the thermometer under Dylan's tongue to check his temperature. After it beeped, she took out the thermometer and read it. 101

"Oh honey." Stevie said as she hugged her son. "You have a fever. I'll give you some medicine and put you straight to bed."
"Okay mommy." He said as he laid his head on Stevie's shoulder.

Stevie gave Dylan some children's Motrin then she carried him into his room and changed him into his pajamas.

She tucked him and a placed a kiss on his forehead.

"Mommy, will you stay with me?" Dylan asked, his blue eyes looking up at Stevie. "Just till I fall asleep."
Stevie smiled and said. "Of course, baby."

Stevie smiled and cuddled close to Dylan. Dylan smiled and closed his eyes.

"Thank you, mommy." Dylan said.
"For what, sweet boy?" Stevie asked.
"For taking care of me when I'm sick." Dylan said as he opened his eyes and looked up at his mother.
Stevie giggled and said. "Awe, baby. You don't have to thank me. I'm your mommy and I will always take care of you. It's what mommy's do for their babies."
Dylan yawned and rubbed his eyes then he looked up at his mother and said. "You're the best mommy ever! You always make me feel better. I sleepy mommy. I go to sleep now."

Dylan closed his eyes and laid his head on his mother's chest. "Sing to me mommy." He said as he yawned again. "Please."
"Okay, my sweet boy. What song do you want me to sing?" Stevie asked as she ran her hand through Dylan's curls.
"Learning to Fly." He replied. "Like Uncle Tom. It's my favorite!"
Stevie chuckled and said. "Alright, Learning to Fly it is."

Stevie sang the song and Dylan fell right to sleep. When Stevie finished the song, she placed one more kiss on his forehead and said. "I love you, Dylan. Forever and always."

Stevie came out of her memory and stared at Dylan again. Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks and she wished more than anything that she could make Dylan better like she used to do when he was a child.

Now, she felt hopeless. She couldn't do a single thing but sit and wait for a miracle.
