Numb
Having a miscarriage at 13 weeks was rare but it does happen. The doctor had no choice but to induce Sarah. She was in labor for 9 hours and finally it was over. Lily hugged Sarah while she grieved for her baby; their baby. She got to hold her baby for a while; it was so tiny it fit in the palm of her hand.
A couple of days later Sarah was released from the hospital.
They held a funeral and kept it small for friends and family only.
Days following the funeral, Sarah would lay in bed having her hand on her belly; feeling numb and empty.
There were nights where Sarah would cling to Lily and others where she would push Lily away.
As the weeks passed by seeing Lily's belly grow while hers didn't was starting to take it's toll on Sarah.
She had started to distance herself from Lily. Lily would try to show affection and give Sarah comfort, but Sarah would just pull away and leave to another room.
She even pushed her best friend Jessica away. Jessica was also pregnant with twins.
Jessica did her best to be there for Sarah but to no avail; so she backed off and stopped visiting. The only one Jessica spoke to or saw was Lily. Jessica decided to be there for Lily as best she could. Since Jessica had been through a pregnancy before with her son Noah, she gave Lily advice or tell her things were going to be just fine when Lily would freak out with any little thing to do with her pregnancy and baby.
Even though she had Jessica, it wasn't the same. She missed Sarah. She missed hugging her, kissing her, holding her hand, cuddling with her. Lily started to feel lonely. It felt like she was living on her own.
When the baby started to move and kick inside Lily she wanted to share these moments with Sarah; having Sarah feel their baby. She wanted Sarah to come with her to her doctors appointments as well.
But Sarah didn't do any of those things. She wasn't Sarah anymore. She was just a shell of the person she used to be. She would just hide away from Lily, sometimes not even coming home.
Lily was now close to 8 months pregnant; she was trying to enjoy the pregnancy as best she could. She started to decorate the nursery, once again doing it on her own. She had found out that they were having a girl. Instead of the typical color pink, Lily settled on purple colors and chose butterflies to be hang throughout the walls of the nursery.
She was starting to feel exhausted as each day passed. And the stress of worrying about Sarah was starting to affect her.
Lily had just set the crib when she heard the door open. She sighed and made her way to the living room. She had not been feeling well since that morning, and decided if she didn't feel better she would go and see her doctor.
Sarah had walked in and headed to the kitchen to get something to drink.
Lily followed her, crossed her arms and said. "Nice of you to come home."
Sarah stayed quiet sipping on a glass of water.
"Sarah please. Talk to me! I miss you." Lily said starting to feel tears in her eyes.
Again Sarah didn't say anything.
"Sarah! I'm tired of this! We are supposed to be together! We're married! These past few months I feel like I'm a single woman. You're hardly home! I miss you so fucking much! And I need you! I've been going through this pregnancy alone. It was difficult but I just finished the nursery. I needed help with the heavy stuff which thank goodness the delivery guy helped me move somethings around." Lily took a breath as she was sobbing hard by now. Aren't you going to say anything."
"I...just needed time. I lost my baby. My dream was to have a baby and...." Sarah said starting to cry now.
"I know you lost our baby. It hurt me too! I grieved too! But we have another baby that will be here in a few months. I'm not saying this baby will replace our little angel but this baby needs you too." Lily cried placing her hand on her belly. "I love you Sarah! You are the love of my life! Please, try to come back to me, to us! If you can't do that...then...I'm going to tell you to leave. I can't live like this!"
Lily sobbed; all of sudden, Lily gasped as she buckled over. One hand on the kitchen counter and the other cradling her belly.
"Lil!!!" Sarah cried out as she ran to Lily's side. "What's wrong?"
"I...don't...know!" Lily said through each breath. "It...hurts!"
"Oh god! I'm calling an ambulance!"
