Chapter Thirty-Seven

Amelia and Scorpius got off the Hogwarts train, for the last time, hand in hand. They both held their trunks in the other hand and moved away from the train exit where pupils were surging out to meet their parents. Scorpius’ eyes couldn’t help but scan the parents, looking for a pair of identical grey eyes and blonde messy hair. He didn’t find it.

‘He’s really gone?’ Amelia asked, looking at his expression when he couldn’t find Draco anywhere. Scorpius nodded at her, not meeting her eyes.

He had told Amelia whilst they were still in Hogwarts that Draco had sent him a letter explaining that he wasn’t going to pick him up at the train station since that was what Scorpius wanted, that Draco was going to leave. Scorpius was old enough to stay on his own and he didn’t want Draco around him which is why his father had left. He didn’t expect him to be here but it still hurt a little that he wasn’t.

‘I told him to leave and he did. I don’t have to legally live with him,’ Scorpius muttered and then shook his head. He picked up her trunk and then his own, ‘would you like me to carry your stuff to your parents?’

Amelia nodded and then pointed to where Fred and Hermione were standing, ‘they’re right there. We could tell them that I’m moving in with you once we get home?’

‘If you wish,’ Scorpius smiled at her and leaned forwards to kiss her. Amelia smiled back and returned the kiss before they walked over to Fred and Hermione. Fred had his arm around Hermione’s shoulder and was talking to her but he stopped when he saw Amelia. He hugged her instantly. Scorpius nodded at Hermione, ‘Mrs Weasley.’

‘Scorpius,’ Hermione nodded briskly, her eyes looking around for any sign of Draco but there wasn’t any. She sighed and turned to see Amelia who was looking at her. Hermione smiled at her daughter before enveloping her in a hug, ‘I’ve missed you so much, Amelia.’

‘You don’t mind if Scorpius comes over, right?’ Amelia asked as she pulled away from the hug with her mother. Fred and Hermione exchanged a glance and Amelia smiled, ‘actually... we have some news.’

‘Please tell me you’re not pregnant,’ Hermione muttered seriously, her face going white. Fred raised his eyebrows at Amelia and then turned to glare at Scorpius as though he could kill him just with a look.

‘No, no! Not that!’ Amelia assured them, glancing at her father, ‘can we just go home?’

Amelia sighed as Fred reached forwards and took her trunk from Scorpius’ hand. She gave Scorpius an apologetic smile and took his hand before taking her father’s and they all apparated back home. Fred took his daughter’s trunk back into her room as Scorpius and Amelia went to the living room.

‘We’ll just tell them straight out, okay?’ Amelia said nervously, sitting next to him as she heard her mother rummage about in the kitchen probably getting them all some drinks.

‘They’ll kill me and bury my body where no one will find it,’ Scorpius said a little dramatically. Amelia chuckled and assured him that was not going to be the case. Scorpius didn’t look too sure.

‘I love you, okay?’ Amelia muttered, leaning forwards and pressing her lips to his, ‘and I want to be with you.’

Fred walked in, followed closely by Hermione who had four drinks in a tray. She set the tray down in front of them and handed Amelia and Scorpius a drink each before sitting down next to Fred. He felt his hand rest on the small of her back and smiled.

‘So, what’s the big news?’ Fred asked.

‘Well...’ Amelia glanced at Scorpius who raised his eyebrows at her as though to say that she would have to tell them. She rolled her eyes and smiled, looking back at her father, ‘Scorpius has asked me to... move in with him and I said yes.’

‘What?’ Hermione asked, frowning at the two of them.

‘You can’t,’ Fred shook his head, saying that at the same time as Hermione spoke.

Amelia rolled her eyes as Scorpius glanced at her with an expression that read ‘I told you so’. She ignored his look and looked from her father to her mother, both of them were adamant on the fact that she couldn’t move in with Scorpius. She sighed, ‘actually, I can. I’m eighteen, Dad, which means that I can legally move out of my home and live wherever I want.’

‘Living with him? Is that what you think is a good idea?’ Fred asked, frowning at her, ‘no, Amelia. I don’t like this one bit.’

‘Dad, I wish you could be supportive about this rather than tell me it’s not a good idea!’ Amelia shook her head, putting her glass down.

‘Sir, I promise I’ll take care of her. I want her to be with me since I... I love your daughter,’ Scorpius said, but stopped talking when Fred stood up, his hands shaking.

‘You’re not allowed to speak!’ Fred said, pointing a shaking finger at Scorpius. Hermione stood up and put a consoling hand on her husband’s chest, muttering softly that he should calm down. Fred just glared at Scorpius.

‘Dad, you need to let me go now. I’m not a kid anymore. I’m a fully grown adult that can make decisions. Please... let me do this,’ Amelia muttered, also standing up. Her hand went to her necklace, playing with it, ‘this is what I want.’

Fred looked at Amelia for a second, gently pushing Hermione’s hand off his chest. His eyes travelled down to her necklace and his thoughts collapsed. His argument against her moving in with Scorpius dissolved into nothingness. He looked back up at her eyes and saw that she was pleading.

‘Fine,’ Fred said after a moment, his voice was distant and a little unusual. He looked at Scorpius, ‘but if you harm her in any way, meaning to or even not meaning to-’

‘I won’t give you a chance to complain, sir,’ Scorpius said confidently.

Fred nodded at him, sizing him up for a second. The boy had sincerity and was committed, nothing like his father. Fred deemed it to be acceptable and walked over to Amelia, pulling her in for a hug.

‘If anything happens to you...’ Fred trailed off.

‘I’m moving in with the man I love, Dad, what’s going to happen to me?’ Amelia smiled at her father, pulling back from their hug. She looked into the blue eyes, ‘I’m not leaving you, Dad.’

‘Not yet,’ Fred muttered so quietly that Hermione and Scorpius didn’t even hear him. His hand went to the necklace she wore and he looked up at her.

‘Not ever,’ Amelia assured him softly.

*Few weeks later*

‘You still have this?’ James asked her.

Amelia turned from where she was unpacking a box in what was about to be her and Scorpius’ home. She saw James pull out a teddy bear from the box listed bedroom. It was the same teddy bear that James had gifted her for her eleventh birthday, she had kept it and even slept with it some nights when she felt sick or if she was upset.

‘Of course I kept it,’ Amelia muttered, walking over to him. She tweaked the teddy bear’s nose and smiled, ‘I love it.’

‘I’m going to miss you, Amelia,’ James admitted suddenly, looking at the teddy rather than at her. Amelia opened her mouth to tell him that she wasn’t going anywhere, that she would still visit him whenever he wanted her to. James shook his head, taking the teddy from her and saying, ‘I know you think this is a good idea but I just want you to know that if anything goes wrong or whatever happens... you can come to me, alright?’

‘Nothing’s going to go wrong, James. Look at me,’ Amelia said, waiting until James looked at her. She smiled, ‘Scorpius has been nothing but supportive of me and I’m just moving in with him, nothing else. He’s been nothing but nice to me and caring and loving.’

‘Yeah yeah,’ James rolled his eyes. He didn’t know how to tell her that it felt like he was losing her to Scorpius already. She would move in with him but slowly she would start to be immersed in work and spending time with her family and Scorpius that she might not want to be with James at all. He didn’t have the words to explain that so he just smiled at her, ‘good luck, Amelia.’

‘Amelia, how many books did you bring?’ Scorpius asked her, walking into the bedroom with a box in his hands. He put the box on the ground and opened it to reveal a whole box full of various books.

‘Nerd,’ James commented before turning back to the box with the teddy in it and starting to unpack it.

‘You said to bring everything I have so I did,’ Amelia chuckled, lifting the box and bringing it over to the desk, ‘don’t worry, I’ll unpack this. How about you do the kitchen? Do not break any dishes!’

‘You’ve hardly moved in and you’re already bossing me around,’ Scorpius joked as James scoffed under his breath.

Amelia smiled at him, watching Scorpius walk out of their bedroom. She turned to James and saw that he had given up trying to unpack and was looking through some of the pictures she had bought with her. Amelia watched him take out a picture that they had took in the summer of James’ fourteenth birthday. James was in the middle with Amelia beside him, trying to feed him some cake but smashing the piece into his face instead. James grinned at it, the memories coming right back to him.

‘This is a good photo album,’ Amelia said, walking over to him and delving into the box. She bought out a photo album with a pink covering and sat on the bed, gesturing James to sit next to her. She opened it up to reveal different photos.

‘Is that...?’ James pointed to a picture that featured Fred in Hogwarts with his twin right beside him. They were in their Quidditch uniform and wore the same smirks on their faces, arms around each other as they laughed.

‘Uncle George,’ Amelia nodded, playing with her necklace, ‘I wish I knew him. I think he’d probably be the coolest Uncle ever.’

James nodded just as Scorpius came into the room. He walked over to them and looked at the pictures. Amelia smiled at him, making room for him to sit down. Scorpius sat, ignoring James who had turned cold the second he walked in. They all looked at the pictures in silence. One was of Amelia as a baby with Hermione looking down at her like she was the best thing to ever happen to her and Fred had his arm around Hermione whilst Amelia’s tiny fist held onto his finger.

‘Remember that?’ James asked when they saw the picture of James, Amelia, Albus and Lily on the Quidditch pitch. James was on his broom hovering around about Amelia as they casually talked, not knowing that they were getting their picture taken. Albus and Lily were sprawled out on the stands playing chess. James smiled, ‘it was scorching hot that day.’

‘That was the day you jumped into the Black Lake on a dare and I told you not to but of course you didn’t listen,’ Amelia sighed, punching his arm playfully.

They flicked through the photo album, making comments and laughing as they remembered when and where the picture was taken. James felt a little better about the fact that Amelia was moving in with Scorpius but he wished she wasn’t. He could hardly stop her from doing this anyway. Amelia stood up once they got to the end of the album.

‘We have left over pizza. I’ll go get it,’ Amelia said. Scorpius stood up and followed her out of the room and to the kitchen. Amelia glanced at him as they got to the kitchen that was surrounded by boxes. She looked for some plates, ‘it doesn’t take two to get pizza, Scorp.’

‘Do you regret moving in with me?’ Scorpius asked suddenly, leaning against the doorway. Amelia frowned and turned to look at him, wondering what was bringing this on. Scorpius sighed, ‘you just seem so much happier in those pictures... with Potter.’

‘Those pictures... I am happy in those pictures because I’ll never forget the good times I’ve had with all of my cousins especially James,’ Amelia told him but shook her head, ‘I do not regret saying yes to move in with you one bit. You make me happier than anyone could ever make me, Scorp, and I love you... and I want us to do this, okay?’

‘Are you sure?’ Scorpius asked, walking closer to her. He took her face in his hands and looked into the crystal blue eyes, ‘I don’t want you to be unhappy.’

‘I’m not. I’m happy when I’m with you,’ Amelia admitted truthfully. She leaned her forehead against his and smiled, ‘I love you and I’ll never give up on you.’

‘I love you,’ Scorpius muttered, leaning in to press his lips to her.

He must have kissed Amelia so many times this past year but every time it felt as if they were kissing for the first time. The raw passion was still alive between them and he wished it would never fade into something as menial as a routine. Amelia kissed him back with as much passion as he thought she could give.

*A year later*

‘Are you kidding me?’ Amelia sighed impatiently, picking up the clothes that Scorpius had strewn across the floor. Scorpius looked up from where he was lying in bed and rolled his eyes.

‘Come on, Amelia, let’s just get to bed,’ he muttered, looking at the time. It was nearly midnight now.

‘I’ve lived here for nearly a year now and you still leave your clothes on the floor!’ Amelia sighed, putting his dirty clothes on the desk. She would pick it up tomorrow and clean them.

‘We’ve lived together for a year and you still haven’t gotten used to my habits,’ Scorpius smirked at her, watching as she let her hair down and brushed out the tangles, ‘is that going to be the reason we break up, do you think?’

‘Oh, so you’re already thinking about breaking up with me?’ Amelia asked, raising her eyebrows at him through the mirror. She smirked, ‘there’s another girl, isn’t there?’

‘Haven’t looked at another that way since I saw you, Amelia,’ Scorpius chuckled.

‘Quite the romantic, Malfoy,’ Amelia smiled and moved over to the wardrobe. She opened it up and took out her pyjamas. Taking her shirt off, she said, ‘but if you leave your clothes on the floor one more time, I will look elsewhere for a new boyfriend.’

‘Amelia,’ Scorpius muttered, looking at her as she put her night shirt on and some trousers, ‘what would I ever do if you left me?’

‘Hmm, I don’t know,’ Amelia smiled at him, slipping into the bed next to him, ‘I guess you’ll never find out because I’m never leaving you. You’re stuck with me, Malfoy.’

‘That doesn’t sound too bad,’ Scorpius whispered, turning around and slipping a hand across her waist. He kissed her neck, smirking as she closed her eyes, ‘I have to ask you something. I was going to wait until tomorrow but...’

‘Ask me what?’ Amelia asked, eyes still closed.

Scorpius smiled at her before reaching across the bed and towards the beside table with his other hand. He opened the drawer and rummaged about, looking for the small box that he had kept there yesterday. They had lived together for a whole year now and in that year Scorpius had gotten to know Amelia inside and out. He knew when she was upset, happy or stressed. He knew what coffee she drank in the morning opposed to the evening. He knew what sort of breakfast she liked to eat, that she liked to read the newspaper in the mornings. He knew what she liked in bed, what ‘turned her on’. He knew most things about her and with every new thing he learned, he fell deeper and deeper into hopeful love.

‘Scorpius, where are you-‘ Amelia opened her eyes when Scorpius slid out of bed.

He had his hands behind his back and was standing in their bedroom with only his pyjama trousers on. He smiled at her as Amelia slid over and sat down on the bed, her legs dangling on the end. She raised her eyebrows at him, wondering what he was doing.

‘Amelia, we’ve been together for nearly two years and I know that I should probably wait but I can’t keep it in anymore. I need you to be mine forever and officially, I don’t want anyone else even looking at you. I want you for the rest of my life which is why I’m doing this,’ Scorpius took a deep breath and got down on one knee. He kept his eyes on Amelia, smiling when she gasped loudly and covered her mouth with her hands. Scorpius continued, ‘I know that if you say yes to this question, I’ll have to stop leaving my clothes on the floor since it annoys you too much but that is a sacrifice I’m willing to make. Amelia George Weasley, will you marry me?’

Amelia stared at him as he opened the box to show a beautiful ring, her mouth going dry and her eyes pricking with tears. She couldn’t believe Scorpius Malfoy was proposing to her. He was down on one knee and everything! Amelia let out a little sob, her hand still covering her mouth, as Scorpius raised his eyebrows at her and smiled.

‘What do you say?’ he asked. He knew it would kill him if she said no. His palms were getting sweaty and he felt all of a sudden. Should have waited, he told himself, should have waited!

‘Promise you won’t leave your clothes on the floor?’ Amelia asked, her voice coming out in a squeak. Scorpius let out a breath of laughter and nodded. Amelia laughed too, her eyes letting her tears fall free, as she said, ‘then yes!’

‘Yes?’ Scorpius asked, uncertainly.

‘Yes!’ Amelia laughed, wiping away her tears. She got down on her knees and held her hand out as he put the ring on her ring finger. They both looked at it, Amelia sniffling a little.

‘I love you so much,’ Scorpius muttered, pulling her in for a kiss. Amelia’s lips found his and she kissed him until they were both out of breath. Scorpius tangled his hands in her hair, leaning his forehead against hers.

‘I love you too,’ Amelia whispered, kissing him again and again.

Scorpius pulled her up and they got into bed, their lips never leaving each other. He hovered on top of her, kissing her lips, cheeks, neck, shoulders and hearing her pant slightly out of breath. She felt the ring on her finger as Scorpius claimed her lips again. All of the events that had happened throughout their life had led to this point.

They had never gave up on each other and both of them couldn’t thank the other enough for that.
