Chapter Eighteen
Hermione and Fred were walking hand in hand from Hogsmeade, where they apparated, to Hogwarts through the snow that had layered itself on the ground. Somewhere between walking up from Hogsmeade and entering the lurking gates of Hogwarts, they started to argue between themselves, letting go of each others hands.
‘You know what, Fred? I’ve had enough of this and I’ve had enough of you taking Amelia’s side when you know she’s wrong!’ Hermione said, crossing her arms over her chest and pulling her coat tighter around her.
‘It’s her last year, Mia, let her have some fun!’ Fred said and tried to grab her hand but she pushed him away. Sighing, he wrapped an arm around her waist but Hermione wriggled out of his hold with a cold glare.
‘We get called up to Hogwarts every year because of our daughters mischief and you always have an excuse ready before she can explain for herself. Plus, you take her out to Hogsmeade to buy her whatever she wants while I trudge behind you,’ Hermione said, coldly, ‘she’s spoilt and you know it. Maybe if we had another child she wouldn’t be so spoiled.’
‘You know we can’t have any more kids or else we would have,’ Fred mumbled, ‘I can’t believe we had only one kid... and by accident too.’
‘Probably the best thing to happen to me,’ admitted Hermione as they entered Hogwarts. Then she sighed, ‘this time, I’ll talk to Amelia alone. You will not make an excuse for her, understand?’
‘Yes, ma’am,’ Fred said and then smirked, ‘I love you, Mia.’
‘Save it for when we get home,’ Hermione shot him a glance. Fred grinned hugely as they walked up the stairs. Sometimes he wished they had more children to mark their love but he would not give up what he had right now. His family was perfect.
When they got to McGonagall’s office, Fred and Hermione were allowed to go up. They went up the winding staircase, blindly white too, until hey reached outside McGonagall’s door. Fred knocked briskly two times and they were allowed in. Hermione and Fred walked into the room and they saw Amelia sitting in a chair in front of McGonagall. Then Hermione gasped out loud as she noticed the boy sitting next to her and his father.
‘Malfoy?’ Hermione whispered and Draco Malfoy turned around to see her. Something flashed deep in the irises of those grey pools but he turned to Fred and his glare hardened.
Hermione admitted that he was really... fit since the last time they had met which was years and years ago. She knew that he was not married which must have given him time to work on his body and for mid thirties, he looked great. His skin wasn’t as pale as she remembered and she wondered if he had been on holiday. His hair was a little thinner and his eyes were exactly the same as she remembered them to be; hypnotizing and a beautiful grey.
‘Please sit down, Miss Granger,’ McGonagall pointed to the two seats beside Amelia who was looking down at her lap.
‘It’s... Mrs Weasley now,’ Hermione said quietly and she heard Draco cough uncomfortably, ‘just call me Hermione, Professor.’
Fred and Hermione took their seat next to their daughter. Crossing her legs, Hermione felt immensely uncomfortable being in the same room with her husband, daughter and the man who had nearly taken everything away from her. She glanced at Fred to notice him clench his jaw tightly. Hermione took his hand.
‘Fred Weasley, the joker of Hogwarts especially when you had George with you. Your daughter takes completely after you,’ McGonagall said and Fred raised his eyebrows at her, ‘I caught Amelia out after midnight in an abandoned room with Mr Malfoy here,’ (she pointed to Scorpius) ‘and they stole two butterbeers from the Hogwarts kitchens.’
‘You did what?!’ Hermione glared at Amelia who bit her lip anxiously. She glanced at Scorpius who was currently behind held prisoner under Draco’s glare, ‘and with that ... that boy, too?!’
‘Watch it, Granger,’ Draco warned in a low tone. Hermione glared at him and he looked up at her after a couple of seconds where there was only silence.
‘It’s Weasley now, Malfoy,’ Hermione whispered. Amelia looked up at her mother, frowning as she stared at Draco.
‘Yes, well...’ McGonagall started again, ‘this has been going on too long. Every year both, Amelia and Scorpius, have been getting in trouble. Not always together but far too many times. I’ve let it pass all these years and now I won’t stand for it.’
‘Yes, Professor, of course,’ Hermione said, raising her eyebrows at Amelia to indicate that they were going to have a talk later.
‘He won’t be doing this again,’ Draco drawled.
‘He better not be,’ McGonagall said strictly and then stood up, ‘you may leave now and if anything else happens this year... I’m afraid I will have to exclude your children from Hogwarts. Have a good day.’
Hermione and Fred left the room with Amelia trailing miserably behind them. She glanced at Scorpius who gave her a small smile that didn't reach his eyes. Draco placed a hand roughly on his shoulder and pushed him out the room. They closed the door behind him and Hermione turned to Amelia.
‘Do you remember when you promised me you wouldn’t do any pranks this year?’ Hermione asked her, like a bossy mum. Fred opened his mouth to say something but Hermione’s glare stopped him and she turned to Amelia, ‘you were drinking with a boy after midnight! I should take you home right now but it’s nearly the holidays so we have a couple of days left. I don’t want you out of your bed after midnight. I don’t want you with boys who... will take advantage of you.’
‘Mum, please...’ Amelia said, crossing her arms over her chest and going red.
‘No, Amelia. You need to know that some people,’ she glanced at Draco who was across the room, talking to Scorpius. She lowered her voice, ‘are not people you want to be hanging around with. I know how it’s like to be young and curious.’
‘Mum! I’m not like you, alright? Just stop!’ Amelia yelled and Hermione glared at her. Fred got closer to Hermione, whispering for her to stop but Hermione didn't listen to hm. Draco and Scorpius looked over to them as Amelia carried on, ‘you think I can’t make my own decisions!’
‘No, you can’t! You have no idea who that boy is and what he can do to you!’ Hermione yelled, frowning as Amelia scoffed at her rudely. Hermione narrowed her eyes at her daughter and sighed, ‘what’s this about?’
‘You and Dad,’ Amelia answered, glaring up at her. Hermione looked at her with a confused expression and even Fred turned to look at Amelia with wide eyes, ‘I want to know the truth about your relationship!’
‘What do you mean?’ Fred asked, hugging his daughter but he was shocked when Amelia pulled away from him, ‘Amelia, you know the truth. I don’t know what else to tell you.’
‘Really? Because my so called friends were talking about how Mum had an affair and how you, Dad, slept with some other girl!’ Amelia yelled. Hermione’s eyes darted to Draco whose attention was on Amelia now, ‘I want to know the truth!’
There was a huge silence where no one dared to breathe or even move. Hermione stared at Draco, blaming him for everything that had went wrong in her life. Fred’s eyes were fixed on his daughter, wondering how people still talked about Fred and Hermione even though they had been married for years now. Amelia let out a little scream when no one said anything and then she stalked down the stairs. Hermione’s hand caught Fred’s.
‘I’ll talk to her,’ Fred whispered and kissed her lips softly, ‘I’ll meet you at home. Trust me on this one.’
Hermione wasn’t so sure that Fred should be the one to talk to Amelia about all of this. She wanted it to be both of them but the look in her husband’s eyes convinced her otherwise. Fred kissed her again and then he left after Amelia. Fred had always been closer to Amelia for some reason so maybe it was good that he would be talking to her. Hermione watched him leave and then she jumped when she heard Draco talk to Scorpius.
‘Go to class. I don’t want to have to be called here again,’ Draco said harshly and Scorpius walked off after a glare towards his father. Then Draco turned to Hermione and a smirk spread over his face, ‘you didn't tell you daughter that you kissed the father of the boy she likes? Oh, the drama.’
‘Keep your son away from my daughter,’ warned Hermione, ‘I won’t let her get hurt. I won’t let you hurt her like you hurt me!’
‘I shouldn’t have taken your business, I know that,’ Draco’s smirk fell from his face and he walked forwards so that he was closer to Hermione. He raised a hand and the glare on her face was set in stone as Draco slowly caressed her cheek, ‘I needed money for the divorce and for raising Scorpius...’
‘We had no money either! That’s what Fred was doing, getting us money so that we could stay together. You broke us up, Malfoy, but our relationship is solid now. He won’t leave me, I trust him and I don’t trust you or that son of yours,’ Hermione muttered, feeling as though his hand was burning her skin.
‘You know,’ Draco whispered, touching her neck with light fingers, ‘I haven’t forgotten our kiss... I haven’t forgotten you.’
‘I’m married to the love of my life and have a teenage daughter-’ Hermione stated but Draco cut her off.
‘Yet you don’t look a day over eighteen...’ he whispered, leaning forwards so that she could feel his breath on her neck.
Hermione gulped, losing her will to speak or push him away. She hated that he had such control over her and Hermione could remember perfectly well that before Amelia was born, she felt like this towards Draco. She didn't know if it was just lust or... his persuasion with the grey eyes. Draco pulled away and turned his back on her, running a hand though his hair, surprising Hermione.
‘Do you have no shame flirting with a married woman?’ Hermione asked him, crossing her arms over her chest. She lightly touched her neck where Draco had been caressing her and then shook her head, letting her hand fall, ‘you’re disgusting.’
‘Listen, Granger,’ Draco turned around but stopped when Hermione held up her hand to show off her ring.
‘I’m married. I’ve not used the name Granger for years now,’ Hermione said and let her hand drop to her side.
‘I know you’re married. Stop reminding me!’ Draco said, angrily and then he took a deep breath and stared at her, ‘I don’t want to hurt you, believe it or not.’
‘I don’t.’
‘Well, you’ll have to.’
‘But... I don’t believe you and I certainly don’t trust you,’ Hermione said, shrugging.
‘The point I’m making is that...’ Draco took a step forwards but didn't make a move to touch her. Hermione was surprised to see the humour and ego drain out of his eyes as he stared at her, ‘I love Scorpius. I’d give my life for him... I did give my life for him. It’s true. If I didn’t have Scorpius to take care of, I could have been married to Astoria because she never would have been pregnant with Scorpius meaning she never would have left me. I could have had a job and left you alone... I did everything for my son.’
‘I needed the money for my own family too, Malfoy. You took that away from me and I’ll never forgive you for that,’ Hermione said simply and with a hard face.
‘Fair enough but I need you to give me one chance, okay? All I’m asking for is one chance, just trust me... I want to see you tomorrow,’ Draco said, ‘Hogsmeade tomorrow, 1 in the afternoon. Will you come?’
‘Why would I see you, Malfoy, after everything you’ve done?!’ Hermione asked, rolling her eyes at him, ‘I can’t believe you.’
‘This involves your daughter,’ Draco said and Hermione narrowed her eyes at him, ‘Hogsmeade, tomorrow, at one o’clock. Don’t tell Weasley.’
Hermione was about to speak back to him but Draco was already taking off down the corridor. She watched his go, watching how his back muscles flexed as he opened the door and then closed it behind him.
Draco went to find his son.

*Amelia’s P.O.V*
‘You lied to me, Dad. I can see it in Mum’s face that you both lied to me for so long,’ Amelia gave up trying to run away from her father as he caught up with her. She pushed away from him when Fred tried to hug her. Instead, she sat down on the stairs and Fred sat next to her, ‘I want to know the truth.’
‘I’ll tell you everything you want to know, okay?’ Fred asked, ‘just keep an open mind.’
Amelia looked up at her father and was reminded of the times when she got in trouble with her grandad, Mr Weasley. She would always sit on the top step of the stairs and watch as James, Albus and Lily got to play with her grandad. She remembered how her father would always stand up for her, wipe away her tears and tell her that she was so loved... It seemed like times were changing, she was getting older...
‘I’d like to know,’ Amelia whispered, a tear rushing down her face. Fred wiped the tear away and his eyes glanced down at the necklace around Amelia’s neck. He looked away, ‘is it true that Mum had... an affair with Uncle Ron?’
‘An affair... not exactly. Ron and your mother have been friends since their first year of Hogwarts. They’ve been through a lot together and, since it is perfectly natural, they developed feelings for each other. After the war ended, I was in a horrible state of mind since I lost George and your mum helped me through that. We got closer, she left Ron and... your mother fell in love with me and I fell in love with her,’ Fred said, looking at Amelia, ‘and then you happened.’
‘And then?’ Amelia asked, ‘you lived happily ever after? What aren’t you telling me, Dad? Why does grandad hate me?’
‘Dad doesn’t hate you, okay? He was against my relationship with your mother because... Ron and I fought over her a lot,’ Fred said, he didn't want to think of the past but Amelia had to know, ‘your Uncle, mother and I have been through too much and I’m not going to explain that to you because they are really bad memories for me.’
Flashes of cutting himself with his wand, drinking, and ending up in the hospital shot through Fred’s mind. Those memories were too bad to tell his own daughter and she didn't need to know that at all. Fred turned to her and saw that Amelia was staring at him. He hadn’t told her about Draco... and he wasn’t going to. That seemed to have sunk deep down in the ground where no one dared to even talk about it.
‘I’ve done many, many things that I’m not proud of,’ Fred admitted. Like nearly end my life, hitting Hermione, drowning myself in drink, and turning against my own brother, Fred thought to himself but didn’t say it out loud, ‘and your mother has done things too. But the best thing in the world that happened to us was you. You bought us together and we’re stronger than ever now, Amelia.’
‘Dad... was I.. did you plan on having a child?’ Amelia asked, quietly. Looking at her feet rather than her father’s eyes.
‘Amelia... you are the best thing to ever happen to me. I don’t want to lie to you but... no, we didn't plan on it. It happened and I didn't have enough money to support your mum and you... it was a horrible time but I’m so glad that I fought for your mother and you. Now you’re here and Hermione is by my side and I love you both. I would give my life for you, Amelia, you know it,’ Fred said and put an arm over her shoulder, ‘I love you, darling.’
‘I love you too, Dad,’ Amelia laid her head on his shoulder and they sat there for a couple of minutes. Amelia’s thoughts went to Scorpius, wondering where he was and if he was talking to his father.
Two stories down, Scorpius and Draco were having a heated discussion about none other than Amelia George Weasley.
