Chapter 46
I wake up startled at the sound of a flash going off. I forget that I'm on the tour bus couch with Luke and turn in his arms, causing me to fall off the seat and roll onto the ground painfully.
"Ouch." I rub my elbow sleepily from the ground and hear Calum and Michael laugh at my clumsiness.
"Go away!" Luke yells at them groggily, looking over the couch to see if I'm okay.
"Why is it that you two are always sleeping?" Calum questions.
"True lovers sleep together, literally." Michael snickers, pushing Luke's legs off the seat so he can sit down next to him. I slowly sit up straight on the ground and fold my legs, feeling the bus moving under my hands.
"We just like sleeping," Luke mumbles, still not fully awake. I giggle at how sleepy he is. He could sleep for days and never get tired of it and my anxiety medication made me sleepy all the time too so we were perfect nap buddies.
"We only have one more show on the tour this year." Calum hums, coming to sit on the floor next to me.
"Don't forget New Year's Eve Ball," Michael adds as I yawn into my hand. I wanted to crawl back to Luke's side and snuggle him again, the floor was cold due to the snowing outside.
Calum sees my serious expression when I think of all the things we have yet to do for their New Year's Eve Ball costumes and throws an arm over my shoulder, pulling me close to his side.
"Go cuddle your own girlfriend Hood," Luke grumbles but Calum ignores him. He turns on his phone and nudges at me to look at the picture he took of Luke and I sleeping.
"That's cute," I smile with approval. At least the picture was worth waking us up for. Under other circumstances, I would have ranted at him but Calum was having a hard time already with Montana refusing to be anywhere near him.
"This is going on Instagram," Calum says with an evil laugh, I quickly grab his phone but he is faster, he lifts it up above our heads and quickly opens Instagram to post it.
"Please don't," I whine and raise myself to my knees to take the phone from him but his other arm is holding me down. I slap the back of his head with a huff and poke at his sides so that he would drop the phone but he doesn't budge.
"Stop poking me!" Calum shouts with laughter. "Don't post it!" I scream at him.
"Stop screaming!" Michael shouts.
"I will gut you Calum," Luke shouts, finally fully awake.
"It's already up," Calum says with laughter and I glare at him. He just managed to piss off millions of fans.
Lord help us all now.
"You're a fucking prick," Luke says and digs his phone out of his pocket.
"They are going to be searching for me with pitchforks." I groan.
"It's just a picture of you and your girlfriend. Don't stress so much." Calum says to Luke and stands up before I can hit him upside the head again.
"She is not my girlfriend," Luke says loudly and all three of us turn to look at him. Calum looks back and forth between Luke and I, his brown eyes wide with horror.
I shrug at them. "He isn't my boyfriend," I say and smile at Luke.
Michael snorts and squints his right eye. "Sure. And I don't have a penis."
"Oh, we already know," Luke replies monotonously, never missing the chance to get back at Michael.
"You two are practically married to each other," Calum adds.
"We're—significant others," Luke explains awkwardly and I stifle a laugh at the other two boys expressions.
"You mean you haven't gotten laid yet?" Calum wiggles his eyebrows and backs out of the room before I can stand up and punch him this time.
Luke shakes his head and stretches his arms up over his head. "That picture is going to get way too much hate." He mumbles into his hand but I know he isn't that worried. Hate was a day to day thing for them now.
"You have love in your life. It's okay to show it to the world." Michael says in a sad tone and leaves the room. The word love heavy in the air.
---
The tour bus stops at a gas station to refill on gas. Somehow, we've managed to lose the other two buses on the way to the final venue of the tour and the bus driver who we nicknamed "Curious George" is furiously giving instructions to a man over the phone.
"I'm going to get some snacks. Do you want anything?" Luke asks as we get off the bus.
"No, thank you," I say and he follows the others into the tiny gas station mini mart.
I watch my breath as it fans out in front of me, it's like I have flour in my lungs. I stuff my hands into the pockets of my jacket and look around at all the snow, as much as I loved winter, the cold was never something I got used to or liked that much. There is a thick layer of snow on the ground as I trudge towards Michael who is leaning against the bus on the other side.
He coughs a little and takes another drag of a cigarette in his hand. "Since when do you smoke?" I question.
"Since I turned twenty-one two weeks ago." He jokes but I know that it's not it.
"Is something wrong? You know you can talk to me anytime right?" I ask him and he nods, his eyes closed while he thinks.
"It's just—everyone is so in love around me. Like there are Ashton and Addy, all they ever do is make out it sickens me how cute they are," I can't help but laugh at this because it is true.
"—then there is Calum who is head over heels for Montana and they have angry sex after every fight they have. Then there's the two of you," he points towards me and towards the mini marts windows where Luke is examining a chips aisle.
"You two are like something from a fairytale. You came into our lives so suddenly and Luke looks at you like you make the earth stop spinning on its axis." My heart does a painful twitch in my chest and I shiver a bit more.
Luke looked at me like that?
"I know what you're thinking. Yes, he does look at you like that." Michael says.
"He's—we're—we find peace in each other," I say, looking down at the snow under my feet.
"He finds more than peace in you, Sierra. He finds strength. I doubt he has ever looked at Ana the way he looks at you. You two just— wait, have you even been on a first date yet?" He questions and I shake my head no.
"See? And it's like you have been together your whole lives. How do you find someone to love you this much and so soon? How does that work?" He questions the air in front of him.
Luke and I have avoided having conversations about our relationship. All we seem to do is sleep, cuddle, and kiss in every corner we can find.
I don't let myself dwell on the fact that Michael just said we are in love. "It happens when it happens, Mikey. There's no way I or anyone else can explain it to you because you're the only one who can feel it when it happens and there is no explanation for it, at least not one that does it any justice." I try my best to console him.
There is no noise except for our voices and Ashton's distant laughter from inside the mini mart. It's like the snow makes everything go silent.
"Whatever it is, I need it. I'm tired of having to find women to make me feel something other than sadness. I want to get thrown head first into someone's heart and stay there." He finishes his cigarette and crushes it under his boot.
I don't tell him that he shouldn't be sad. Because I know firsthand that the sadness he is talking about cannot be taken away by friends of family or any empty words I could possibly offer him.
"You will have it. And when you do, it will be the most beautiful thing you experience." I reach up to ruffle his hair that is filled with tiny flakes of snow now.
"Thanks." He hugs me to his side and I instantly feel warmer.
"Those boys are my family, seeing them in love makes me feel as happy as it makes me feel lonely." He says and we laugh as Luke waves at us from inside the glass doors of the mini mart, bopping his nose against it and pulling faces at us.
"No matter how much he gets laid, he will always be a child." Michael scoffs, shaking his head with mock disappointment.
---
We are lost. And there is a snow storm raging around the tour bus and the engine has died, forcing us to stop in the middle of the road. The heaters have stopped working too and we are most probably going to freeze to death if we don't get out.
"Can't we just walk back to the gas station?" Ashton questions.
Calum eyes him like he's crazy. "In this bloody storm?"
"Well we have to do something, the phones aren't working either." Dave, the boys long time bodyguard lets us know.
"Maybe we can hitch-hike?" I offer worriedly, looking out the windows at the snow mixed in with the cold air, blowing harshly and howling against the exterior of the bus.
Why are there no cars passing by? Surely we weren't the only people using these roads?
"If you want to die, go ahead." Addy scoffs and Luke mutters at her to shut up when I stiffen a little.
"Wait, look there! A truck is coming towards us!" Montana yells from the back of the bus where she was sat looking out the window. Dave and the boys get out of the bus as fast as they can and we follow, George yelling at us to be careful.
Ashton puts his hand out to stop the brown truck and it clatters to a stop inches away from us, spraying dirty brown snow everywhere. The wind picks up a little more around us.
"This is every single horror movie I have ever watched." Montana whispers in my ear, huddling closer to my side.
We watch while Dave walks to the driver's side to talk to the bald headed man in the driver's seat. I strain my ears to hear what he is saying. "Our bus broke down and we can't seem to get any connection on our phones. Is there any way you can help us get back to the gas station back that way?" Dave points the way we came from but the bearded man shakes his head.
"You can't go back that way. They are closing the roads because of the storm. You can only go forward." He says bluntly.
"But our bus is broken down," Ashton adds and the man looks out the passenger window, looking at all of us. We probably looked like a couple of stranded kids on a high school trip to him.
"My bungalow is close by. I can take you all there if you can fit in the truck." He points at the bed of the old truck that has a couple of tree barks lain across its length.
"We can't fit in there with our things," Luke says worriedly.
"Well, I can make two trips but I can't guarantee it. The storm is only getting worse." The man explains thoughtfully.
"How do we know who this guy is?" I hear Michael say to Calum quietly.
Dave climbs back into the bus and we stand around in the cold awkwardly, no one saying much. Ashton makes small talk with the man, probably making sure he isn't a serial killer.
"We have a small rest house in my bungalow. Y'all can stay there a couple of days till the snow dies down."
"But we have a show to get to... and Christmas is only ten days away," Addy tells the man, looking at Ashton worriedly. Christmas hadn't even crossed my mind despite all this snow.
"Do not worry. I am sure you will be able to see this show again some other time." The old man smiles at us kindly.
"We are the show, Sir," Ashton tells him and the man looks at us again, then back at the huge bus, contemplating this. "That is too bad, too bad. Alas, we will find a way to get you back on the road soon." The man gets out of his truck as Dave comes back.
"George says he will stay on the bus with all the belongings in it. I will drop you all off at this kind man's place and out of the cold and come back for the things." Dave explains to us and the band starts to protest, saying one of them will stay back too.
"It is my job to protect you four at all costs, none of you is going to be left here now get in the damn truck!" He yells at them like they are preschool children. We squeeze into the truck but Michael, Calum, and Dave end up on the bed of the truck, exposed to the snow and cold air.
"I hope he is blue as a Popsicle by the time we get there." Montana laughs and waves at Calum as he glares at her lovingly through the dirty window dividing the inside of the truck from the bed.
"I was giving him the cold shoulder all week. Get it? Cold." She laughs at her own joke and continues to mock Calum. She has been making jokes since Michael's birthday to cover up the tension between them and the fact that she wouldn't let him lay a finger on her.
There were just so many things I did not know how to fix or go about it was starting to make my head hurt.
Luke, who is squished between the driver and me, laughs at something the man says. The worry lines on his forehead are gone now and the eye bags have disappeared. Even though I know enough to know that internal torment is hidden well externally, he looks well, way more than he did three months ago.
Luke sees me watching him and smiles, taking my hand in his and squeezing it for reassurance as the truck roars forward through the snow.
