PROLOGUE: The Red Painted Bridge
"Dear friend, across the river..."
The air around you burned with smoke and ash, the red of the sky above doing wonders to conceal the blood coating the stone of the bridge.
"My hands are cold and bare..."
Your small hand clutched tightly into another, the voice of the singing girl on your far left ringing through your ears.
"Dear friend, across the river..."
You glanced at the pink haired girl you were holding the hand of, as she guided you and her little sister across the bridge.
"I'll take what you can spare..."
There were so many Enforcers, too many for your young mind to comprehend.
"I ask of you a penny..."
Explosions, gunshots, the heavy breathing of Enforcers through their masks, it filled your ears unbearably.
"My fortune it will be..."
Powders song, although a bit unnerving given the circumstances, helped clear your mind as you gripped Vi's hand with your own for comfort.
"I ask you without envy..."
Your eyes roamed across the blood and corpses painting the bridge, you were used to seeing them, but this made you want to be sick.
Holding in your vomit, you and the other two continued on.
"We raised almighty towers..."
Six pairs of footsteps echoed between the three of you, as Powder kept singing.
"Our homes are built of stone..."
You felt Vi slowly come to a stop, which made you and her sister stop, as well.
"So come across the river and find..."
Powders song faded away as she uncovered her eyes, looking up at her sister in confusion.
Vi didn't meet her sisters gaze, instead, looking ahead at all the bloodshed.
All of you let out shaky breaths, as Vi turned her head when the smoke cleared away a bit, revealing a figure that had just finished punching down an Enforcer.
The pink haired girl pushed both you and Powder behind her as he approached, and you soon recognized it to be Vander.
You barley registered Vi asking where hers and Powders parents were, as your gaze focused in on a pile of bodies some distance away.
And your eyes caught the wide, unblinking, dead gazes of your mother and father.
It seems Vi also saw it, as you noticed her mom was there, too. Both of you let out pained sobs as Powder stayed quiet, her mind too young to be able to comprehend what was happening.
It all happened so fast that your brain couldn't catch up. Vi dropped to the ground, accidentally pulling you with her, as her sobs got louder, and Powder wrapped her small arms around her sisters neck.
You kneeled on the ground, staring at it blankly as tears rolled down your cheeks, gripping Vi's hand like a lifeline.
You barley registered what happened next, as Vander carried Powder and Vi in his arms, and let you sit on his shoulder, as he led you all across the bridge.
Glancing at Vi as you leaned on Vanders head, you caught her sad gaze, and then followed it as she stared along the vast array of bodies, smoke and blood.
You sneered at the sight of the tall towers of Piltover, narrowing your eyes at the City Of Progress.
You then closed your eyes, leaning your head on top of the man carrying you, then gently humming the same tune Powder had been singing, in order to clear your fogged mind.
