Chapter Two: An Evening at Jericho's
Vi sat next to Powder in her bed, watching as her sister tinkered on Mouser, her latest bomb that she was making.
She didn't know much of how this kind of stuff worked, but Powder was into it, so even if she didn't know, she'd still be supportive.
Her eyes drifted from her sisters bomb to you, who was seated in the yellow chair rather weirdly. You kind of looked like you were laying in it, with your back pressed up against one arm of the couch, and your legs hanging over the other.
A faint smile crossed her lips as she thought back to what Vander had suggested to her yesterday.
Maybe...
"Vi?"
She looked down at Powder, who had spoken.
"Yeah? What is it, Pow?"
Powder seemed to hesitate, glancing away from Vi.
"Do you think that maybe next time you and the others go on a job, I could come with? I promise I won't mess up!"
Vi stared at Powder in slight shock, before hesitating herself.
She thought for a bit, before nodding at her sister, who grinned wide.
"Yeah, sure. I think you're ready."
Powder threw her arms around her sisters neck, hugging her.
"Thank you so much, Vi! I won't let you down!"
Vi smiled to herself, patting her sisters back with a bandaged hand.
Once Powder had sperated herself from her older sister, she began working on her bomb again.
Vi gripped the wood of the top bunk above her, passing you a glance every now and then, before she took a deep breath to steady her nerves, and stood up.
Powder looked at her in confusion as she began to walk towards you.
"Uh, hey, Y/N?"
You tilted your head backwards to look up at her from where you were sitting, a questioning look on your face.
"Yeah? What's up?"
Vi ran a hand over the shaved side of her head, looking away from you briefly.
"Do you maybe want to um... Go to Jericho's with me? Get something to eat?"
You blinked up at her, before shrugging nonchalantly and smiling at her.
"Sure, whenever you wanna go."
Vi stuffed her hands into the pockets of her pants, her shoulders hunched.
"I was thinking now? Like, right now? Well, not right now I just meant, like, soon."
You chuckled slightly at her awkwardness, flashing her a toothy smirk.
"Wow, you really didn't think this through, did you V?"
Vi shrugged, awkwardly. "Not really."
You shook your head fondly with a laugh, maneuvering your body to sit in the chair correctly, before standing up.
"Aight, let's go then."
As both you and Vi went to leave, Vi saw Powder stand up from the bed out of the corner of her eye, making her turn to her younger sister.
"What is it, Pow?"
The younger girl looked at her sister expectantly.
"I thought we were all gonna go."
Vi's mouth fell open as she looked around the room, noticing that Mylo and Claggor had stood up as well, ready to leave.
She stammered, clenching her fists anxiously.
"Uh, this was kinda gonna be a me and Y/N thing, guys, y'know? Just the two of us."
She gave the two boys a look, and they immediately knew what it meant, so they sat back down.
Powder, however, didn't understand as she gave her sister a sad look.
"Why should she just get to hang out with you? Going to Jericho's is all of our thing."
Vi stuttered, thinking of an excuse just so she wouldn't have to tell her sister that this was a date.
"Uh, it's hard to explain, you'll understand when you're my age, OK?"
Powder's eyebrows formed a crease as she gave Vi a confused look.
"But I want to go with you, why should I be your age to do that?"
'Aghh! Powder, stop making this so difficult for me, I just wanna go on a date with a pretty girl I like!' Vi thought to herself, dramatically.
"Powder, just drop it and let Vi and Y/N go on their date. Stop being such third wheel." Mylo said from the couch.
"Mylo" Vi seethed as she turned her head to glare at him.
As Mylo just tossed his hands up in the air, Vi turned back to her sister.
"Look, Powder-"
"Whatever, just forget it." The younger girl said bitterly as she tossed both you and Mylo a glare, then sat back on her bed with her back turned to the room, drawing on her bomb with chalk.
Vi let out a breath through her nose, looking at the ground with a sad and regretful look.
You placed your hand on her shoulder, making her look up at you.
"You still wanna go?" You asked. "I understand if you wanna stay here with Powder."
Vi's eyes flickered for a moment, before she sighed and shook her head.
"No, let's go, give her some space, y'know?"
You nodded, then led her out of the back room.
As you both walked through The Last Drop, Vi caught sight of Vander behind the counter.
He looked over at you both briefly, smiling and doing a thumbs up and a thumbs down with a raised eyebrow.
Vi gave him a thumbs up, to which he responded with a smile, then got back to work.
As you both left the building, you turned to the girl.
"So, this is a date?" You asked, with a teasing grin.
Vi looked away from you awkwardly, avoiding your gaze as she looked at something else in her view.
"I mean, only if you want it to be. We could just hang out, if you're more comfortable with that."
You bumped your shoulder with hers, tossing her a grin.
"Dude, stop being so weird, we're cool. You don't have to be so nervous around me, you know that, right?"
Vi sighed, stuffing her hands in her pockets.
"Yeah, I know, but I just don't wanna mess anything up, or make things weird."
You laughed softly in disbelief.
"You really think you could make things weird between us? Vi, I've liked you since I was like, thirteen."
Vi's eyes widened as she turned to look at you.
"You have...?"
You nodded with a small laugh.
"Yeah, and I'm actually kind of glad you maybe feel the same way." You said, as you turned you head away from her to look at your shoes as you both continued walking.
Vi took notice of the flustered look coming onto your face, and slowly reached her hand over and grabbed yours, tentatively interlacing her fingers with your own.
You side eyed her, shocked, before looking a the ground again and smiling.
With her free hand, Vi took out the few spare coins in her pocket -given to her by Vander as chore money- and counted it.
With her other hand, she swung both yours and her arms back and forth ever so slightly, giving your hand a soft squeeze.
Noticing she was counting her money, you took out your own. Combined with hers, it'd probably only be enough for one meal at Jericho's, and it probably wouldn't be the special -that was stupidly expensive, given that this was The Lanes- but you were willing to share with her.
You put your own coins into her hand, enclosing her fingers around them.
"It probably won't be enough for us to have separate meal, you OK with sharing?"
Vi nodded, "it's not like we haven't shared food before in the past."
You nodded, joining Vi in swinging your arms, and leaning into her side just a bit.
"So," you started. "What does this make us?"
Vi pursed her lips.
"Girlfriends, I guess? Only if you want, though."
You smiled to yourself, squeezing her hand just a bit tighter.
"Yeah, I'd want that."
~~~
You and Vi sat side by side on the stools of Jericho's food stand, sharing a bowl of grease and gravy covered fish. It wasn't the best, definitely not above board, but you and her enjoyed it nonetheless.
Vi shoved one of the fishes into your mouth, watching as the mixture of grease and other weird liquids ran down the corners of your mouth and down your chin.
She barked out a loud laugh, reaching over with her hand to rub it away with her fingers, staining the bandages she had wrapped around her palm.
You laughed as well, taking a piece of meat from the bowl and smearing it on her cheek.
"Agh! Gross!" She exclaimed with a laugh.
You both continued teasing eachother with the food, before Jericho got tired of your shit and sent you both off with a snarl and grunt.
You and Vi laughed on your way back to The Last Drop, and based on the activity in the streets, it was nearing or already night time.
With a loud sigh, Vi draped an arm around your shoulder and pulled you close.
"I'm glad you agreed to this, really. It means alot that I wasn't plain out rejected."
You wrapped your arm around her waist, gazing at her.
"I wasn't gonna reject you anyway, stupid. Like I said, I've liked you since for a long ass time."
Vi glanced away from you for a brief moment, before looking your way again and taking a deep breath.
"I don't really know how to go about this kinda thing, and I don't know any fancy way to ask this, but... Do you wanna be my girlfriend? Just to make sure, of course."
You let out a soft laugh, pressing your face into her shoulder.
"Yeah, I will." You said with a grin. "You don't need to have a fancy way of asking me. Hell, you could've just gone up to me at any point of the day and asked, and I would've said yes."
Vi smiled and guided you through the doors of The Last Drop when you approached. You both took notice of how the chairs were stacked on top of tables, and alcohol was being put away.
Vander looked up from where he was behind the bar, and smiled knowingly at the both of you.
Vi just ignored his teasing look with a huff and led you to the back room.
With her arm still around your shoulders, Vi opened the door and walked you both down the small flight of stairs.
You heard Mylo let out a whistle and laugh, making both you and Vi glare at him.
"So," he started "finally tied the metaphorical knot, huh?
Vi just flipped him off and removed her arm from your shoulders, taking you by the hand instead and walking you both to the chair.
She ignored the teasing from Mylo as she sat down, with you in her lap.
~~~
Once night had fully fallen, Vander had told all of you to go to sleep. Mylo was sleeping in the chair, Claggor on the couch, you on the top bunk, and Powder and Vi on the bottom.
Powder wouldn't look at Vi, her back was turned to her. She hadn't even spoken to the older girl when she and you had gotten back.
Vi knew that Powder was attached to her, rightfully so. She was the only family the younger girl had ever since their parents died. But, it got a bit overbearing sometimes when Vi just wanted to be by herself with her thoughts, or maybe spend some time with her now girlfriend.
With a purse of her lips, Vi went to reach for her little sisters shoulder, only to be cut off by Powders quiet voice.
"Is what Mylo said true?" She asked. "Are you and Y/N dating now?"
Vi hesitated, before answering with a whisper.
"Yeah. That's why I wanted it to be just me and her today. So I could ask her out."
Powder turned so she was facing the pink haired girl, a sad look on her face.
"Does this mean you'll spend more time with her than me?
Vi's steel blue eyes widened a fraction as her lips parted.
"No, of course not." She said. "Just because we're dating now, doesn't mean it's gonna be any different.'
Powder held out her hand to Vi, her pinky finger up.
"You promise?"
Vi smiled at her sister, before reaching over and intertwining her finger with hers.
"I promise."
Powder smiled back, her eyes holding a mischievous gleam.
"If you break the promise, I get to shave your whole head."
Vi let out a mock gasp, holding a hand to her heart.
"Pow Pow, how could you be so cruel? My own sister?"
Powder let out a small giggle, leaning forward and hugging Vi.
"As long as nothing changes, I'm fine with it." She said, quietly.
Vi let of a hum in response, and returned the hug.
"Nothing is going to change."
It took awhile for both of the sisters to fall asleep, but they eventually did, wrapped in eachothers embrace.
From the top bunk, you lied on your side, staring at the wall. You hadn't meant to listen to their conversation, but you couldn't help it.
With your own smile, you pulled the blanket further up your body and fell asleep.
