Chapter 18- What is wrong with me?

After getting off the train they went out of the train station where their families were waiting for them. Jane quickly turned to Quinn and whispered " We have to talk about what happened. Meet at the bunker Monday after school?".

None of them said anything but they gave each other small nods before walking off to their families. Quinn flung her bag onto her shoulder and started to sleepily drag herself to her family.

"Quinn! Oh, thank god you're safe" her grandad shouted relieved to have his granddaughter was safe and back with him.

This kept happening but yet again Quinn looked around and there was no sign of her grandma.

"wheres grandma?" Quinn questioned.

"She's still at the house and she's making your favorite, lasagna!"

A warm smile spread over her face as she hugged her Grandad tighter before releasing him and getting into the car.

The next few days flew past and every day was the same, get up, eat breakfast, grab a new book, get back into bed, have dinner and then go to sleep. Over that time she tried to keep her mind off of everything that had happened on the island and what she had done, even though she tried she couldn't forget what had happened so she kept thinking about how she did it and what was happening to her. A part of her was trying to hope that it was all just a dream but deep down she knew that it wasn't and judging by the time it seemed like those creatures had been down there and the fact that they all knew her, she guessed it had been coming for a long time.

She had avoided her friends all weekend and didn't go to school on Monday because she didn't want to face everyone since she knew that if she did that would confirm that everything had really happened and that she was, in fact, a freak just like the twins had said.

So now it was Monday night and there was no prolonging talking about it any longer. Dragging herself down the stairs she left the house with a shouted goodbye to her grandparents. Just like her walk home from the bunker last time she felt like someone was watching her or following her so instead of cutting straight through the woods she walked down the brick house avenues and down a little alley as she walked she looked at everything around her trying to seem unfazed by whoever was following her. Still the hairs standing up on her arms made her alert, she was now certain someone was following her.

Wanting to get rid of the creep she directed herself to a little cafe that was nestled on the corner of two quiet, ancient streets.

Hurriedly Quinn stepped into the cafe and a small bell rang overhead and as the bell rang an old woman popped up from behind the counter. Her hair was rather wild and her choice of clothes even wilder. Quinn could already tell she was free-spirited and possessed a quirky attitude to life. Deep in her wild curly hair, which was held back with a hair clip, sat a small pair of red, half-moon spectacles with stars littering the frame.

"Oh hello there! How can I help you?" , softly uttered the woman.

But before Quinn could answer the old woman gave her a quizzical look and then her face lit up as old memories rushed to her brain"Oh gosh. Arent you Jessicas daughter?"

"Erm yes I was . I mean I am. Did you know my mam?" Now more curious than ever Quinn excitedly anticipated the woman's answer. For eventhough her mother most likely abandoned her she still loved to hear of her reckless adventures and see the amazing photos that were kept in the attic but her grandparents didn't like to talk about them and the only time they ever talked about them was when Quinn asked to do something or go out somewhere with her friends and her grandad would say that he didn't want the same thing happening to her that happened to her parents.

The woman's heart leapt at Quinn's first for knowledge about her mother " Well you see I have owned this shop for many years now and it belonged to me even when your mother was my age. Most of the kids avoided me but your mother she was a kind and positive soul, she visited me every day and when I was close to losing this place it broke my heart and she couldn't bear that so she held fundraisers and she stopped the bank from claiming this place. So without her, I wouldn't be here now and after you were born she payed off everything I owed just so I could keep this place. It broke my heart when she left. Would you like to see a picture of her  here?".

"Yes! I would love that, my grandparents don't talk about her a lot and I only have around 10 photos of her"

"Well say no more my child" she shuffled to the back of the counter and pointed to a photo with her long dwindly finger.

It was a photo of her mother surrounded by her friends and the woman was stood with her arm around her. There smiles stretched from ear to ear as they all stood outside of the cafe that Quinn was in now. It was the happiest photo she had seen of her mam, lumps started to form in her throat, vision blurred and small droplets formed and glided down her face. Enough now she thought. I have to man up. You don't cry in front of stranger man up! Man up!

Pulling herself together she dabbed her eyes and smiled at the woman. "When was that taken?" Quinn croaked trying to seem like she hadn't been crying but failing miserably.

"Just after we saved this place. Your mother and I were already close but it brought us closer together than we ever had been before. She never has to pay for anything here and I guess since she is regrettably  no longer with us, it is only right that I do the same for you. So what will it be a milkshake, slush, cupcakes?"

Cupcakes, not this again "why are you doing this for me? You hardly know me" Quinn sighed.

The woman relaxed and smiled " I might not know you well ywt but i knew your mother and i want to pay her back as much as I can by helping you and you seem like a genuinly nice kid, to be honest, you remind me of her".

To be told that she looked like her mother was one of the best compliments she could ever receive and just like that the woman had warmed Quinn's heart and made it dance with happiness. though neither of them knew it, they had both just made a friend for life.

"Thank you. I see why my mam spent so much time here this is a lovely shop and I know I don't know you very well yet but I think so far that you are a wonderful person!" She beamed out.

"Now let's get you something to eat, shall we. So what will it be hun?" she just tilted her head at Quinn and gave her a welcoming smile.

Looking shyly at the old woman Quinn whispered: "If it's not too much to ask I would love a hot chocolate and a cupcake".

"Coming right up!"

The old woman then set herself to work, pottering about the kitchen making Quinns snacks. When Quinn thought the woman was done she sat forward in delight desperate to see why her mother loved this place so much but the woman just walked straight past her, What more could she possibly do to it  Quinn wondered. Then the woman reached down into the cabinet and pulled out some whipped cream and mini marshmallows.

Childhood memories came flooding back to her, the strong smell of shortbread fresh out the oven, the hot liquid passing down her throat and enveloping her in warmth which flowed through her veins as she kept drinking, the smiles of her parents looking at her as if she was the only thing that mattered to them in the world, those were the best moments of her entire life. Then she realized her parents had left her, she was all alone. Ice cold venom seeped into her bloodstream, her face draining of color and all happiness leaving her body.

"There you are dear!" the woman sat down her snacks in front of her and took the seat opposite her.

"So dear...

They talked for what seemed like hours Quinns momentary saddened state had slipped away in the company of the old woman who she had learned was called Elizabeth but beth for short. Throughout this whole situation of finding out more about her mother and making a great new friend the thought of the person following her had escaped her mind.

The sun was setting and Quinn was still sat with the Beth so she finished off her snacks said her goodbyes and then left the cafe and set off again to meet her friends, wanting to get there before it was dark Quinn started to run.

The wind through her hair back behind her and it waved wildly as she ran on and on and on. The woods began to get thicker just like the last time and she leaped over the small snarling branches. It was there again someone was following her she could hear the heavy panting somewhere beside her but it was starting to get darker and she couldn't see anybody but she knew they were there. Knowing that if she went straight to the bunker and climbed inside then they could easily follow her and they could go in there whenever she wasn't there. Rather than lead them there she sped up and rocketed off to the right running as fast as her legs could carry her she felt a slight thrill at the chase and laughed at the irony of the whole situation it was so stereotypical. She felt as if she was in a horror movie but instead of being the good looking teenager she was the smart dysfunctional child who was to fast to be caught, Sure that she had lost whoever was following her she sharply sprinted left towards the direction of the bunker.

With the bunker coming into view she bounced along the home stretch, panting like a dog she reached the stump, but she didn't have a moment to lose the creep could be somewhere nearby. So using all the strength she had left in her aching muscles she flung the lid up and stead of climbing down the stairs she jumped straight down and pulled the lid shut as she went. Landing in a heap on the floor she fell back exhausted and confused.

Why can't my life just be normal? What is wrong with me do I attract the weirdos and the mythical creatures? I would really like it if someone could just explain my life to me because at this point I'm just so confused. Argh, what the hell am I talking about my life is amazing except the fact that I have no parent live with my grandparents and have basically no friends. Oh shut up man you have amazing friends you have this place and your grandparents love you. Why the hell am I arguing with myself? okay, anyway...

Not having the energy or the will power to get up from her mangled position she stretches her arm out trying to grasp ono the fridge door. Feeling the cold metal handle touch her palm she pulled the door open. Rattling about she searched for a can, but apparently, there was none there.

Dammit

giving up she decided just to push her self over to the can basket so using her legs she rolled across the floor to the basket. They weren't going to be perfect because it wasn't going to be a cold drink but nothing in her life was perfect and thats just tough luck. Reaching into the basket she embraced herself to feel metal but as she reached further into the basket her hand didn't grasp metal instead she got the warm touch of skin...
