Sixteen

I sit down on the beach. I look at the water's edge.

"What's wrong child?" I hear her voice again.

"Who am I? Where am I?" I ask.

"You will know. How does the search go?" She asked.

"I don't even know what it looks like. I don't know where to look." I say.

I rub my face. How am I supposed to find fire in the biggest ocean in existence? I have no clue where to look.

"Are ngenga okay?" Aonung asked.

"I just am thinking." I say.

"About?" He sits next to me.

"I don't know anything. I don't know who I am. I don't know where I am."

"I can answer the second half of your question. You're in our village."

"Thanks for that." I scoff.

I turn. He touches my holes on my cheek. I look at him.

"You know, you are very brave." He said.

"How do you know?" I ask.

"A nìngay man knows pehrr another man is zamunge." He puts his hand on shoulder.

(A true man knows when another man is brave.)

I nod.

"Wait, how are you a man?" I ask.

He splashes me. He pushes me into the water. I look at him confused. I splash him back. We keep racing around each other and splashing each other. I then see something. A shiny golden shard peering through the sand. I take it out.

"Very good child, bring it to me at the dead of night." Her voice whispers.

I nod.

"You okay?" He asked.

"Uh yeah fine. Uh I need to go back get some sleep." I say.

He nods. I run off.
