Chapter 6
"This is why students shouldn't wander the forests unsupervised at night." Jacob points out for the tenth time.
"It's your fault." I shoot back for the tenth time.
"Well, you said it was safe!"
"I said it MIGHT be safe," I argue. "I'm not omniscient."
"How was I supposed to know there would be a hole here? That's suspicious on so many levels!"
"It must have been party of some old well thing they did way back when," I shrug. "They must have forgotten about it and the weeds around this area covered it."
"That's helpful." He says sarcastically.
I ignore him. He fell into a huge hole, which I soon discovered it to be a well. We've only been stranded for perhaps half an hour anyways. The well is perhaps 20 feet deep. Yep, I fell with him because I was right behind him. It's luckily not damp in here, but it smells moldy. I spy some creepy crawlers. It's very uncomfortable.
"Um thanks by the way," I say. We both lean against the opposite side of the well and sit. The well is probably six feet in diameter.
"For what?" He seems to be teasing me.
"For being a landing cushion." I smirk. I actually hit the stones on the walls before I landed on him. Still, his body probably saved me from further injury. I know that the backside of shirt is in tatters. My back is stinging and numbing, but I'm slightly scared to see how bad the damage is. I don't want to call attention to my back.
"You're really heavy. I think you broke something." He pouts.
"Your pride?" I laugh.
"No, i actually think I did break something." He moves around and checks his pockets. Then, he briefly searches the ground around him.
"Oh bullocks," I see his phone in his hand. Well, what's left of his phone. The screen is severely cracked. I doubt it works. He tries to turn it on, but the screen stays black.
"Well, this sucks." He stares at his phone ruefully.
"Here let me see mine." I open my fanny pack and rummage for my phone. "Ah, it still works." I automatically start dialing the janitor's phone. Again, the janitor is bomb and the most friendliest guy I have met on this campus. We are best buds.
"I have no service." I glare at my crappy phone. "There's no dialing tone."
"So, are we stuck here and nobody know where we are?" He sighs and stares up at the blue sky above.
"Empty out your pockets, and I'll see what I have too." I order him, perhaps we can somehow use the items.
Jacob empties out his pockets. He places his wallet, keys, headphones, and phone. I do the same and take out my water bottle, wallet, keys, ipod, earphones, phone, pocketknife, fruit snacks, and granola bars.
"Well, we have some food." I say positively. "And the pocketknife may come in handy."
"You think you can climb up?" He stares above once more.
"You would need to be super strong." I start measuring the diameter of the well and looking at the stones. There is a higher chance of success if we rock climb. Some of the stones are protruding out, but it's obviouslt still dangerous because we don't know how stable those rocks are. And some barely leave room for a hand to grasp it. "I think it's roughly around six feet in diameter. We both aren't six feet."
"On the tips of my toes, I am easily six feet." He contemplates.
"I think we could actually climb it using the rocks of the wall, or we could go back to back and climb up." I add, but I don't know if my back could handle it.
"back to back like we are sitting in a chair?" He stares at me, actually thinking about it. "Are you stronger in your lower or upper body?"
"I'm strong in both." For once, I am glad my father forced me into martial arts training, even if he was rather brutal.
"Okay," he nods. I like that about him. He doesn't judge me by my size or appearance. "Let's try it."
We both stand up, but Jacob staggers as he puts weight on his left ankle. He winces and holds the wall for support.
"I think I might have twisted my ankle." He says apologetically.
"Let me see it." I crouch down and examine his ankle. It's already starting to swell. He must have been hiding the injury. "Okay, we can't go back to back then. How much weight can you put on your ankle?"
He starts testing his ankle. "I can handle the pain. It's fine." I'm sure he can with his background training.
"We need some padding in case we fall from climbing. This is obviously not going to end well on the first couple tries." I look around. There's moss that somewhat softened our impact when we fell here.
Jacob starts taking off his clothes.
"Whoa there!" I shriek and turn around. It's a little sudden, and I'm not mentally prepared to see him naked.
"Shay! Your back!" He cries out in shock. Oh shoot, I forgot about my back.
"Is it bad?" I say quietly.
"It's just scratched up," he makes it sound better than it probably looks. "It probably looks a lot worse than it is because of all that blood."
"You can turn around."
I glance at him. His clothes are off besides his boxers.
"Why are you only in your boxers?"
"Well, I thought it would cushion us a little." He says sheepishly.
"Jacob..." I trail off.
"I had a dumb moment. Don't mention this again." He blushes slightly and puts on his clothes again. I mean he could keep the clothes off since he has quite a sculpted body. It would make me uncomfortable if he was near me without his clothes on but still.
"I'm going to go first, and I'm trusting you to catch me if I fall." I latch on the rocks nearby me and begin to climb up. After a couple minutes, I'm beginning to sweat profusely. This is a lot more difficult than I thought. My muscles are straining as it tries to lift all of my body weight. My fingers are barely clasping onto the small rocks.
"How far am I?" I yell out as a long time seems to pass by. I'm afraid to look down.
"You're almost half way there!" He yells back. "Be careful!"
"I will!" I shout. I continue slowly.
"Shit!" I curse as the rock under my right foot loosens and falls out, making me lose balance slightly. My right fingers shake as I try to look for another rock to step on. There isn't any.
"I'm right under you!" He shouts reassuringly.
I clench my teeth tightly. I spot a small crevice diagonally to my right. Taking a risk, I swing my body slightly so my right foot can catch it.
I miss. I feel my left foot slip off the rock, leaving me barely dangling by my fingers.
"Let go!" Jacob yells.
"1-2-" I count out loud. I let go on three.
It is a terrible feeling plummeting to my death even though Jacob is going to catch me.
"Oomph!" He grunts as I collapse on him. Luckily, he is not being gallant but smart by choosing to catch me without standing up. If he had stood up, he would have injured and collapsed on his ankle.
"Thanks," I huff. I stand up once more, panting. "Let me try again."
"You need to rest," he stares at me. "Look how tired you are. Are you dizzy?"
"I'm fine," I swat him away. I feel fine, but I take small sips from the water bottle before I try again.
This time I manage to go half way before falling.
Third time is the charm.
Jacob could probably hear my labored breathing down there. I lift myself over and fall on my back on the grass. I didn't care there were bugs and other creatures dwelling in the weeds and grasses around me.
"You want to help me out?" He shouts.
"Let me go find a ladder!" I catch my breath before shouting.
"I'll be here!" He shrugs and slumps down by the walls.
"I'll be back real soon!" I stand up shakily on my feet. The burning sensations in my muscles have yet to cool down. I am most likely going to cramp up.
And halfway to the school, I cramp up. However, I don't quit that easily. My pace slows down as I lug my way to the supply shed. I take out my ring of keys from my fanny pack-sorry Mr. Kingsley (the janitor) for duplicating your keys without permission.
"What am I thinking?" I mutter as I grab the ladder that is more than twice my size even when it's folded up. Glancing around, I see no other option and proceed to drag it back to Jacob.
I think by the time I get to the well, it's been almost three hours. I hope Jacob hasn't died. This time I am careful at where I step. The metal ladder is heavier than it looks so I take even longer.
"Jacob?" I whisper and then shout when I hear no response. The sun has set and it is getting dark. I whip out my phone to illuminate the dark hole.
"Jacob!" I shout again. The light shows pitch black. I lower the ladder now carefully in case he's in there.
One...two...three...
I count to a minute before climbing down. When my feet touch the bottom, I see it is completely empty.
He's gone.
