Chapter 35
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have just been cleared to land at the Kansas City airport. Please make sure one last time your seat belt is securely fastened. The flight attendants are currently passing around the cabin to make a final compliance check and pick up any remaining cups and glasses. Thank you."
I open my eyes ever so slightly, peeking at Jacob next to me. His seat is tilted back like mine. I watch as he appears to be asleep. One never quite knows if he is asleep or not. The guy could be fake sleeping the entire flight as he plots and plans in his mind. I'm no trained assassin or agent like him, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Plus, he wasn't the only one fake sleeping.
Jacob twitches and acts like he wakes up. "How was your sleep?" He looks at me groggily.
"I'm rested enough." I nod back. "You?"
"Me too." He nods back. We readjust our seats and buckle our seats.
"It'll be nice to be on ground again." Jacob relaxes a bit. "I was never one for airplanes."
"Are you scared of flying?" I wonder.
"Nah, I'm just a little bit paranoid." He shrugs, seemingly confident as usual. I sometimes wonder if he even fears anything, like quiver in fear type of fear.
"Oh yeah," his face lights up at a sudden thought, "I looked up the connecting flights departing to Chicago." His finger taps a napkin which has words scribbled across it.
I scan the contents of the napkin: the next flight is in five hours.
"Five hours?" I say in shock, "that's a long waiting time." Silently, I think it's also a long time frame in which one can do something, say ambush a flight carrier and assassinate a mafia boss.
"Yeah," he sighs ruefully, "but it is the first flight out of here."
I'm tempted to look up the times but it will only show my distrust. Thus, I will trust the flight times he says. I am not that worried. Plus, unbeknownst to Jacob, I took up extra precautions.
Seriously, Jacob always has some plan cooking. I'm not falling for his boy charm. He was totally trying to charm his way into making me believe that he was not going to sneak out and do something suspicious.
Anyways, onto the precautions I made. When I was doing my "lady business" in my bathroom, I used a Picocell to dial out. Yes, I made a call on an airplane, going against the explicit instructions given out from the flight crew. Well, with the help of Sky, I used a Picocell or whatever that is to contact my brothers.
It just so happens that my father put Leo and Tony in charge of watching over Alfredo Acerbi in case any shady business occurs. I guess my father has some paranoia too.
Obviously, my brothers are not within the air carrier itself since they are also fugitives in their own way. The plane that Acerbi is on is crawling with policemen and probably lots of CIA agents. Well, that's my assumption since I didn't get to ask for too many details.
No, Leo and Tony are trailing Alfredo Acerbi with their own airplane. I know this because Dante, who I called, bitched about it. He was in a bad mood that he was not allowed to go. He was stuck at home because he hadn't completed his paperwork, what exactly this paperwork was I had no clue. Still, I would not be surprised he found his way over here all by himself. He was never one to listen to people.
Anyways, I told all my brothers about Jacob. They are prepared to tackle Jacob if they see him. I kinda want to see this scenario take action.
My brothers vs Jacob: Jacob does not have a chance.
The airplane attendant announces that we have landed. Jacob and I stand up and stretch out our bodies.
"Did you bring any luggage?" I ask Jacob. I notice he has two carry-on bags. I wonder where he hid his guns. Airport security is extremely anal so there is a low chance he snuck on any weapons. I will find out eventually, not sure if it'll be a good surprise. I recall that travelers can bring weapons but they had to be unloaded. However, I don't know if it's legal for Jacob to carry one when he isn't a law enforcer or 21 years of age. I rarely travel on airplanes so I don't read the TSA handbook on weapons. That's my brothers' jobs.
"No, just these two." He gestures to the backpack and duffel bag he is carrying. "Did you bring anything?"
"Nope, I didn't intend to actually stay on the plane..."
"True. This just makes things faster. Well then let's go find something to do." He grabs my hand and starts rushing out. The guy seems eager.
*****
"This is so delicious." I moan as I take another bite out of the best burger I have ever had in my life. Then again, I'm incredibly hungry and anything would probably taste amazing.
"I second that." Jacob takes a huge bite out of his burger.
"You've got some sauce right there," Jacob points to the corner of his lip.
I grab a napkin and dab my right corner of my lip.
"No, the other side." He points once more, but this time indicating my left.
"Did I get it?" I dab my left side.
"Not quite." Jacob leans over the table and wipes away the sauce with his finger. Then, he licks it off his finger with a grin. I'm sure he meant it to be seductively. I'm kidding.
"You could have used the napkin." I roll my eyes.
"But what's the fun in that? Plus, the sauce is amazing." He laughs.
"You do you," I take a fry from his plate and eat it.
"Hey, those are my fries." Jacob frowns and covers his plate protectively.
"Like you didn't finish all my fries," I take another fry from underneath his fingers. This time he grabs my wrist and bites the fry between my fingers.
"Hey, you butt. Sharing is caring." I flick a wadded up napkin at him.
"Gross. That's used!" He dodges in horror. He reaches for a fry and aims to chuck it at me. Oh, he better not waste a perfectly crisp fry.
"Excuse me," a waitress clears her throat suddenly. Jacob and I pause and realize she must have been standing there for a minute or two but we were too distracted to notice her. She seems to be in her mid twenties, petite, and slim. Her strawberry blonde hair fits her light tanned skin well. She has a cheery expression on her face despite Jacob and me ignoring her accidentally.
"Hello, sorry for interrupting you lovebirds, but would you care for some dessert? We have a menu on the table that has all the desserts we serve." The waitress kindly gestures to the menu folded upright at the edge of the table. Her voice is high-pitched and sugary.
"We aren't dating." I immediately respond out of instinct.
"Oh, my bad. Pardon my assumption." She chuckles awkwardly and blushes.
"It's fine. We get it all the time. You know, it's just a one-sided love. I always ask her on dates, but she rejects me all the time. You would think that after twenty askings she would finally say yes...." Jacob sighs sadly at the waitress. I'm sure she is swooning at his puppy dog eyes. She looks at me as if I am insane. "You would think that this would finally be date, but no...it's not."
Oh my god. I try my best not to give him a dirty look.
"Aw, you poor thang." She pouts and gives Jacob an unnecessary pat on his shoulder. She's a bit closer than she needs to be.
"Anyways, I think we are quite full, so no dessert for either of us." Jacob smiles and asks for the check.
The waitress leaves before shooting the both of us one final look, though her glance at Jacob is quite longer. I don't miss the fact that she slips a piece of paper to Jacob; it probably has her name and number on it. Go figure.
I can't say it doesn't bother me. I mean really, what type of girl just gives out her number to a complete stranger. The guy could be a serial killer! Even worse, it could be a coldhearted assassin like Jacob, though he obviously does not appear like one. I have only seen glimpses of that part of him.
Jacob puts down his credit card, probably not even his, before saying, "I'll pay. It's on me." He doesn't seem like he's going to budge.
"Okay. Thanks." I nod. I'm not going to argue over a small bill. If he wants to pay, I'll let him pay. This kind little gesture makes me loosen up a bit. I'm being way too paranoid.
"I'll meet you outside. I'm going to the restroom." On my way there, I briefly consider the possibility that he will make his break here. He's going to leave me in some random restaurant as he goes towards Alfredo Acerbi. Yet, I'm not too worried because I planted two bugs on him. Yes, I actually carried them because I'm also paranoid like my family members. I slipped one inside his jacket pocket and another in his bag. Plus, my brothers will stop him if need be.
I come outside the restaurant and see Jacob parked in front. He sits casually behind the wheel of a red mini cooper.
"And where did you get this car?" I lean on the passenger side window. The car is lightly decorated for me to reach the conclusion its owner is a fairly young female.
"I might have nicked the waitress's keys." Jacob breaks out in a wide grin.
"When she was flirting with you?" I smile amusingly as I sit inside the car.
"Oooh, do I hear a bit of jealousy in your tone?" Jacob gasps as he starts driving.
"Of course not. I'm just pointing out a fact that I observed. The waitress was flirting with you. That is all." I shrug in a collective manner. He's always trying to poke and prod to get a reaction out of me.
"You're no fun." He grabs a pair of sunglasses and tries them on. They fit comically upon his face. The vogue sunglasses are big and round with ruby red rims. It's styled for a narrow face and is rather chic.
"Do I look good?" He tries to model for me.
"Wonderful." I say dryly. "So where are we going?"
"See? No fun at all. You have no sense of humor. I have to squeeze it out of you."
"I can be fun." I yawn. "I'm just tired. You didn't answer my question."
"It's a secret!" He smirks. "I'm not telling."
Ugh, he's such a kid.
****
On the way to wherever he is taking me, we stop at a gas station.
We stand side by side as we wait for the gas pump to stop refilling the car.
"Do you want anything at the store?" Jacob asks after he pumps gas. I pause and think. I look over at the store and consider if I want to buy a bag of chips. Then, I feel a cold metal touch my wrist with a clink.
"What the--?" I glance down at my left wrist. It's handcuffed to the handle of the driver's car door. "Where'd you even get the handcuffs?" I checked him before he didn't have any handcuffs.
"Ah sorry about this. You should have figured out I wasn't going to give up so easily. Hell, I knew you knew I wouldn't. That's why I beat you to your game. Here's the bug you planted on me." He tucks the bug I planted in his pocket. Then, he winks and blows a kiss at me.
"I'll see you later!"
"You know this won't hold me long right?" I tell him.
"Yeah, but by the time you get out of those cuffs, I'll be long gone." He pats my cheek. "I'm sorry about this." He checks my clothes and takes away my phone, wallet, and hair pins. He pockets pretty much all my things.
I yank at the cuffs. "You're going to get what you deserve, you son of a bitch." I grimace.
"Yeah, well it was bound to come anyways." He grabs his bags from the trunk of the car before heading to the back of the store. Then, a black Toyota corolla comes out. Yes, he's the driver.
I watch as he zooms off.
I stare at the handcuffs. I don't have a bobby pin or anything else I could use to pick it. I search around for any civilians or perhaps a way to alert the storeowner of the gas station. However, the store is rather far from where the car is parked. There's nothing nearby. There are no cars, weapons, or anything within reach. I glance at the window of the car. I've never broken a window with my bare hands before. Today can be a first perhaps.
i gulp. I have heard stories where it's stupid to punch open a side window. They are tempered glass or something. It's meant to be as shatterproof as possible.
Wait, I'm so stupid. I grab the gas pump. Then, I repetitively bludgeon the window until it breaks. Eventually, after several minutes it shatters. I grab my jacket and place it around the glass shards to unlock the car from inside. However, the car alarm starts beeping rather loudly. At least the storeowner may come out now. Then, I proceed to search the car for a bobby pin. If I know something, girls always have some random bobby pins lying around somewhere. I look everywhere before finding one pin. All the while the car alarms continues to ring.
I use the pin to pick the handcuff in minutes. Then, I rub my wrist as the cuff comes off. I head towards the store.
"Hey, can I use your phone real quick?" I walk in as casually as I can to the front counter.
He looks up from his magazine suspiciously before saying, "What's the number?"
I give him the digits and wait as the call dials.
"Hello?" Dante answers.
"Jacob is heading your way. He caught me off guard. He didn't spot one of my bugs. Track him."
"Alright. I'll let the bros know. Do you need a ride or something?" He says.
"Yes please." I agree. "Do you need my address?"
"Sky's got your address." He surprises me.
"Sky?" I love Sky.
"yeah, he's right next to me." Dante confirms.
"Ugh..." I groan. "Okay." Sky of course jumped on board. This is dangerous stuff, and of course, once again he doesn't give a crap. He's going to do whatever the hell he wants. I hope he doesn't get hurt, but it's a risk Sky is willing to take.
"Thanks for the call." I smile to the store cashier guy before rushing out of the place. He's probably going to call the cops soon.
The mini cooper is getting rather annoying as it continues to beep loudly. I wish I had the keys, but Jacob took those of course. It takes perhaps ten minutes before I can hear police sirens. I gulp and cross my fingers that Dante gets here soon.
A car approaches the station. "Yo!" Sky pops his head out from the window and gestures for me to get in. As soon as I climb in, I see two police cars pull into the station too.
"Go! Go! Go! It's the popo!" I urge Dante, who doesn't need much encouraging as he hears the sirens. However, he steps on the gas pedal calmly as he drives out of there. He's going for the hiding in plain sight. It works as nobody follows us.
"Jacob is around ten minutes away from Acerbi." Sky looks over his shoulder at me from the passenger seat. "We are twenty minutes away."
"How about Tony and Leo?"
"They are already there." Dante reassures me.
"Okay, cool." I nod nervously. This could all turn sour quickly.
"Catch." Sky hands me his computer gently before climbing to the back. The guy is huge so it takes a bit of effort for him to climb to the back without hitting Dante.
"Alright. Let's go catch Jacob." Sky rubs his hand together and cracks his knuckles. He starts to chuckle evilly, "I can delay him."
It reminds me how scary Sky can be.

I took a little break haha. Anyways, please remember that I update once a week. That may seem like a long time and I'll lose readers for this, but that's my schedule. Even though I graduated, I'm taking summer classes and working everyday. I'm going to be tired and busy! Please respect that.
Some of you have been asking about the completion for this story. I think after the next chapter which has the face off of Jacob, Acerbi, and the brothers there will be one more chapter after the face-off. Then, I'm going to have an epilogue. I may choose to have one additional chapter before the epilogue if I feel like it's needed. Thus, the story may end in July actually!
How's summer for you all? Are you all traveling? Anything fun and interesting you've been up to?
Thanks for being awesome as always! (Thanks for saying congrats on my graduation! That cheered me up!)
