Chapter Sixty-Two
Despite the fact that Renata clearly didn't understand a word he was saying to her, she could see the distress on James' face and concern overtook hers. It seemed she wanted to help him in any way that she could as she stood up slowly and invited him to sit down for a moment. But James didn't want to sit down, in fact, at that moment, all he wanted to do was cry or kick himself because he had been too late to rescue her before they did whatever it was they did to her mind. It was one thing that she didn't remember who he was, but to erase the entire English language that she was practically fluent in, James could tell that they didn't want her remembering anything from her time in England.
That hurt him more than anything, that he had her right there in front of him, but he couldn't communicate with her. He hadn't even thought about that scenario being a possibility and now he hated himself for not coming up with a better plan. But then again, James hated himself for the reason that if he hadn't overreacted at Harry's birthday party, they wouldn't have been in such a predicament. If he had sought help earlier and attended therapy sooner, perhaps all of the pain he was feeling earlier could have been avoided.
And it wasn't his own pain that hurt him either, it was not knowing what Renata had gone through in order to become the person he was faced with. Very similar to what he and Sirius had suspected, it seemed all of her memories shared with him were gone, he was nothing but a total stranger to her. After everything they had been through, after everything she had done for him and Harry, there wasn't that connection anymore. They had taken it from her and it was like Alcina or whoever had anticipated James coming after her, so she created the language barrier.
He couldn't hold back anymore as the stress of the situation finally broke him down. Thinking that once he found her everything would be better, only to find her and become completely stuck with how to help. James placed one hand over his eyes to hide the fact that he was already starting to cry, leaving Renata looking quite alarmed at what was unfolding before her.
After all, to her, she was just coming by the restaurant to have a meal and read her book in peace, not have some stranger ramble on in a foreign language and then proceed to break down in front of her. He felt terrible just for putting her in the awkward predicament as he couldn't imagine what was running through her mind.
Suddenly, he felt the gentle sensation of her fingers touching under his chin, guiding his head back up. James dropped his hand, only to come face to face with Renata once more, a faint smile on her face as she offered him a napkin to wipe his eyes.
" Ti prego non piangere," she whispered to him, " non preoccuparti, andrà tutto bene."
He didn't know what she was saying to him, but he could gather it was something comforting to get him to stop crying, especially as she used her thumb to wipe away a fallen tear. When he met her eyes, there was a hopeful approach that she would recognise him or snap out of whatever had a hold on her memories of him. Instead, her eyes scanned over his face as if she was trying to recall who he was, but as her smile faded, he could tell that she was just as lost as he was at the time.
"Ren," he said, his voice becoming shaky, " I'm so sorry, this is all my fault. I know you don't understand a word of what I'm telling you, but I'm so sorry for everything. I shouldn't have said that you weren't Harry's mother and the way that I said it was inexcusable. And I've already told you sorry so many times before, but I'm really sorry."
She looked so confused, trying to decipher what he was saying, but to reassure her that he wasn't upset with her, James forced a smile on his face and moved her hair that had fallen into her face, tucking it behind her ear like he normally did. Renata's cheeks flushed a light pink as her hand traced where his fingers had made contact with her skin. They were quiet for a few moments as James was praying for some sort of miracle.
"Stai bene?!"
The two adults jumped as the sound of Matteo's grandfather, Giulio rang out interrupting them as he seemed to be checking in on Renata to see if she was alright. He gave James a suspicious look, obviously still not trusting the visitor that Renata didn't seem to recognise.
"Sto bene!" Renata called back to him. She asked him something else that James couldn't quite make out but after Giulio reentered the restaurant, Matteo made his way outside with a grin.
"See? I told you she would show up, right?" he said as he approached the table. He seemed amused by the scene until he noticed the teary look on James' face and the look on Renata's. "Uh, what is going on here-"
Suddenly, Renata cut him off and started speaking rapidly, pointing back and forth between her and James. Matteo gave a shrug along with a nod of his head before turning to face James, folding his arms across his chest.
"What? What did she say?" James questioned him. "She pointed at me, what does-"
"She wants me to translate between you two. I'm at your service."
"Oh, alright," he replied before sitting up straight, realising he still had a chance, " tell her, that my name is James Potter. Tell her that she used to know me, that she used to be a nanny for my son Harry."
Matteo looked confused and James couldn't blame him, to anyone outside of the situation it sounded bizarre. After all, if what he said was true, if Renata had been the nanny to his son, why wouldn't she remember? It made no sense unless someone was aware of the situation and even James didn't even fully known what was taking place. But he turned to Renata and seemed to translate, enough that James recognised his name being spoken. As soon as he finished speaking, Renata immediately began saying something in return before Matteo turned back to him.
"She said she thinks you have made a mistake," he said, " she doesn't know you and she has never been a Nanny."
"Tell her I know this sounds mad-"
"No joking," Matteo huffed under his breath before allowing James to continue.
"I know it sounds mad but she doesn't remember me and she doesn't remember my son for a reason. But she used to live with me back in London, we were dating at the time..."
The time in between Matteo translating and Renata responding left James sweating enough to form a puddle beneath him. He continued to wipe his forehead of the sweat that gathered above his brow.
"She says that you must really have mistaken her for someone else," Matteo said, " because she has never been to London or outside of Italy. She has been working since she left school."
"Then ask her if she started working after she left school, why has it taken her so long to complete her training? Ask her if she ever had a blood phobia that stopped her from working?"
Shooting him a bewildered look before glancing back at Renata, Matteo translated once more, leaving Renata to raise a brow. She turned to James, as if he was a Seer, looking a little frightened by the information he had before she quickly shoook her head.
"No, Renata, you know what I'm talking about," James told her as Matteo whispered in her ear, " you didn't get to complete your training after you left school. How old are you now? What happened to the time in between when you left school and now? You lived with your brother Adelmo, you lived with him in London where he worked. You lived with him after you failed your training and that's how we met."
Renata's eyes widened but she continued to shake her head as she whispered something back to Matteo.
"Renata says you're wrong. That she failed her training before but she remained here in Italy, she lived with her parents during the time. Her brother never left either, he stayed with them in Florence. She says you have made a mistake, she does not know you."
Suddenly, James pushed himself up and walked over to where Sirius was waiting, grabbing his friend by the shirt and dragging him over.
"Do you know him then? Do you remember Sirius? He was practically your best friend back home. You spoke to him all the time, you confided in him and he confided in you."
As Matteo pointed at Sirius, Renata began shaking her head "no" again as she claimed she didn't recognise him either. It was definitely confirming what Sirius and James had believed about the Abate family and what was taking place at the school. There had to be a reason why so many of the students had gone mad, it was obvious they were interffering with their minds.
"She doesn't remember! She doesn't remember me!" James exclaimed as he turned to Sirius. "She doesn't remember you, she remembers nothing!"
His hands came to slam down on the table causing Renata to jump once more as she met his eyes.
"How can you not remember?"
"James, stop," Sirius told him, " it's not her fault-"
Sirius attempted to interfere but James wasn't having any of it, too upset to listen to any rationality. He was in too much pain to think correctly, he was just coming to terms with how much he loved her and he had to face the idea that the woman he loved didn't even know who he was. Digging into his pocket, he pulled out a photo that he was carrying on him and slammed it down on the table.
"How can you not remember Harry?!"
The door to the restaurant nearly slammed open as Giulio came storming out at the sound of the commotion, he was yelling something while pointing his finger in the opposite direction, leaving Matteo to clear his throat.
"My grandfather is telling you to leave," he said quietly, "he said that is enough and you need to go."
James was about to open his mouth and protest but Sirius led him away to keep the peace as they didn't want to draw any unwanted attention to them. They were in unfamiliar territory and it was best not to make any enemies. Pulling him away from the scene, he needed James to think clearly so they could come up with another plan. It wasn't Renata's fault that she couldn't remember, but there was obviously foul play afoot, and they needed to figure things out to set them right.
Renata watched as one man led the other away from her table, leaving the small photo behind which caught her eye as soon as she caught movement. Immediately, her hand reached out and saw that the photograph was moving, which meant that the two were actually wizards. She lifted the photo up and looked it over to see a bright face, toothy-grin little boy with messy black hair and beautiful green eyes that stared at her as he clapped his hands together. He was beautiful and just his smile alone made her smile as well.
It settled the pounding in her chest as the man who claimed to have known her had caused her to become nervous with how upset he had gotten with her.
"Again? Again? Clap!" a little voice rang in her ears, causing her to look around, only to see Matteo talking to his grandfather.
"Nanny Nanata! Go play!"
The voice seemed to grow louder in her ears causing her to flinch, but she was confused as no one was around her talking. It was all happening inside her head as she continued to look down at the photo. Her hand traced over the outer edges as she started to experience a dull headache forming.
"Mummy! Mummy! Look!"
It was growing painfully loud as she took to clapping her hands over her ears to block it out the voice, but it didn't muffle it at all. Instead, there was a flash of white light that blinded her momentarily and when she opened her eyes, she found herself sitting on a beach, somewhere. There was the little boy and there was the man that had introduced himself as James Potter, both of them sitting with her in the sand.
James and Harry.
Suddenly, there was a barking sound, bringing her to turn her head before the dog morphed before her very eyes, turning into the other man that was present.
Sirius.
She gave a shake of her head, only to have her attention grabbed by the scene of the water where the waves were crashing against the sand, she saw a family of red-heads, all of them waving at her.
Molly. Arthur. Bill. Charlie. Percy. Fred. George. Ron. Ginny.
"Mummy!" she felt a tug on her hand, bringing her to look over to see another toddler grinning up at her.
Neville.
The flash of white light hit her repeatedly, flashing images of all different people, leaving her with the feeling that her head was being split in half. Her hands gripped her head, almost as if she was trying to keep her head together, but it grew so painful that it made her scream out, drawing attention to where she was sitting.
Forcing her eyes open, she looked down at the photograph once more and the pain subsided as she reached a shaky hand to touch it.
"Harry. Harry James Potter."
Remembering the name, it seemed to strike her as if she was suddenly splashed with cold water, leaving her to jump up. She grabbed the photo and immediately began looking around, scanning the forming crowds of people in order to find James and Sirius. They couldn't have gotten far from her, at least, she didn't think that James would just leave the photo behind with her.
"James?! James!"
A sense of panic raced through her chest as she didn't see James anywhere and the people around her were all giving her strange looks, wondering what she was yelling for. Even Matteo and Giulio looked terribly confused as just a few minutes ago, she was shaking her head and wanting to get away from James. Since there was no response and the desperation was kicking in, she decided to go to a last resort method that she was fairly certain wasn't going to work, but at least she could give it a go.
"MR POTTER!"
Sirius had taken James around the nearest corner, not too far from the restaurant but enough that they were out of sight so that Giulio didn't come after them.
"Take a breather, James, there's no sense in getting upset with her, it's not her fault. Alcina did something to her and we can bet if she did something to her, she probably did the same to Adelmo. They won't know who we are-"
"It's not that they don't know who we are, they changed everything in her mind, Sirius," James managed to croak out. "She didn't know us, but she didn't even have any recollection of being in London. She thinks that after she left school that she went back to live with her parents and Adelmo did too. In their minds, they never left here, they've always been here. They didn't want them to have any connection to us....she can't even speak English anymore!"
"James, I-"
Before Sirius could continue, the two of them stopped as it sounded like someone else was calling out James' name. They glanced at one another almost as if they were both trying to confirm the same thing.
"MR POTTER!" The two heard and it sent a pleasant shiver down James' spine as he turned his head in the direction it came from.
Darting out from the small alley way where they had gathered, James scanned the area, only to see Renata holding the photo in her hand as she stood in the middle of the road. She finally spotted him and she seemed relieved but confused at the same time. Looking around the entire area, James could see her lips part as her brows furrowed together. When she looked back at him, she blinked a couple of times.
"What's going on?"
Her English was clear as she took a staggering step forward, as she continued to grip the photo in her hand. James went to race over, but as soon as his foot stepped off the curb, there was the sound of cracking in the air, as two hooded figures appeared on either side of Renata. She looked back and forth in surprise before they grabbed her arms as she went for her wand.
"JAMES!"
"REN!"
He went for his wand but he was too late as the figures disapparated with her, disappearing from the scene. Immediately, another figure appeared shortly after and had his wand drawn as it seemed he was obliviating the muggles that had witnessed the scene. James was frozen in place in shock, but thankfully, he had Sirius, who raced forward and grabbed him by the arm so the two of them could escape just in time.
They landed on the outskirts of Parma, hitting the grassy land roughly as they stuck a horrible landing. But as soon as James rolled over, he attempted to get back on his feet.
"They took her, Sirius! She remembered and they took her!"
