Chapter Sixty-Three
There was a struggle on Renata's behalf as she remained in the hold of her captors, but unfortunately, early on they were able to take her wand from her, leaving her powerless against them. She attempted to physically fight them, however, since both of them were armed with their wands, all attempts were rendered as failures. In her hand, she gripped the photograph of Harry tightly as she dragged inside of her parents' home. She didn't understand what was taking place, she didn't understand why she was back in Italy when the last thing she could fully remember was staying at Adelmo's flat after the incident at Harry's birthday party.
Harry, she thought to herself before thinking of James and the fact that he was there in Italy, along with Sirius. And while she didn't know what was going on fully, she had a feeling that her mother was behind all of it. Especially as she was dragged through her parents' home with no sign of them. She tried to turn her head to view, just who dwelled under the hoods of her captors, but she found that she physically couldn't. Her body was seemed to keep her stuck in the position she was in. They've must have cast an incantation when she was too busy mulling over what was actually taking place.
And rather coming to a halt within the home, Renata found herself being dragged into the back, in the direction of the root cellar. A sense of fear and puzzlement swirled inside her chest as she couldn't fight off the captors to escape before she was pulled inside. When she was a child, she remembered being told that the root cellar was off limits, mainly because that was where her parents said they stored wine and all sorts of other things that Adelmo and she didn't need to be messing with.
However, she had a feeling for all those years that the root cellar was definitely holding something more than wine, it held the darkest secrets of the Abate family because she could feel her skin crawl as soon as they entered the dark area.
Finally, the hold on her arms was released, bringing her to fall to the ground roughly, but she didn't even manage to move freely for more than a few seconds when she felt something cold and hard wrap around her wrists and ankles. They began to pull, placing her into a position that she couldn't move from as she was in a kneeling position with her arms pulled behind her back. While it was practically useless in her situation, Renata attempted to scream for help and as she pulled, she realised that she was actually chained in place.
The sensation of her headache continued to grow worse as she could hear voices talking inside of her head, ones that she recognised but didn't remember sharing in a conversation such as that. Gritting her teeth, she tried to fight the pain off and focus on what the voices were saying directly, however, she was interrupted by the sound of faint cracking before her, meaning several people had apparated into the room with her. It remained dark for a few minutes, but after a few seconds, she was blinded by the light of a wand bringing her to turn her head away before her eyes adjusted.
As she was finally able to turn her head back, she was able to see that four other figures that gathered around her besides the two that stood on either side and had been the ones to pull her inside in the first place. A lump developed in her throat that grew difficult to swallow, making it all the more difficult for her to breathe properly.
"Wh-what's g-going on?" she tried to keep her voice steady, but paired with the pain in her head, the shock of the entire situation had left her rattled. "Who are all of y-you? What do you want?!"
Suddenly, one of them removed their hood and even in the lighting of the sole wand, Renata was able to get a clear look at her mother standing before her.
"Mamm-"
Before she could finish, the figure standing next to Alcina, removed their hood, revealing Renata's father, Nencio Abate. A look of disappointment clear within his narrowed dark eyes as he seemed to loom over her.
"Mamma...Papà...I don't understand, what are you two doing? Why am I in chains? Why am I back here, I was home in London and-"
Alcina's shrill laugh immediately cut her off as Renata fell silent watching as her mother approached her with slow and steady steps. She closed her mouth as Alcina came to lower herself so that they were at eye-level, the smile fading off her lips as she began shaking her head.
"Renata, you are so innocent and naive," Alcina told her, "a heart of gold and yet, you waste it on the wrong people. You were not home in London, this is your home."
"N-no," Renata stammered, " my home is back-"
"Back with the widower who kicked you out? Back with the man that used you and then told you that you would never be a mother to his child that you were practically raising. I told you he would use you, Renata. You had sex with him and shortly after, he kicked you right out. He conquered you and then left you to rot off to the side-"
"That's not true!" Renata snapped in Alcina's face. "That's not true at all!"
"Then why were you at Adelmo's flat?" Alcina asked her, a small smile on her face that made Renata's entire body shiver. "Why were you no longer staying with the widower and his son?"
The room fell silent as Alcina seemed to know exactly where to dig her emotional blade to cause the most pain. Renata looked away from her for a second, trying to concentrate as the voices continued to swirl within her mind. Finally, she lifted her head back up, narrowing her eyes at her mother after a quick glance around the cellar.
"How do you know about all of that?" Renata asked. "You weren't there for any of it? How do you know about the situation between me and James? How do you even know we had sex?! How did you all know where to find me today? Why did you take me away when James was there?"
She let out an irritated yelp as there was pang inside of her head that made her feel like it was about to explode.
But when she opened her eyes, she no longer found herself in the root cellar anymore, instead, she found herself back when she was a little girl, back to the memory she had during the Quidditch incident that she confided in James. There she was faced with Alcina as she stood by Adelmo, both of them getting a scolding because they had snuck out of the classroom to play during the summer days. The last time she had the memory, she had been blinding by a bright white light before anything happened and then she had woken up in hospital. However, this memory seemed to continue further to expose the truth.
In the memory, Alcina was furious with them and Adelmo was trying to calm her down by claiming that they would get back to work right away. However, instead of being allowed to return to their desks, Renata was suddenly moved aside, away from her brother. Alcina walked over and grabbed a fistful of Adelmo's hair, yanking him to follow her out of the room, which caused Renata to scream, along with Adelmo. Yet, she wasn't able to follow as Alcina stepped out into the hallway with Adelmo and then with a wave of her wand the door of the classroom closed over, locking her inside.
Trapped inside the room as she pulled at the door, the only thing Renata could hear were the sounds of Adelmo screaming before she heard a door open and shut, then everything fell silent.
"Adelmo? ADELMO!"
Frantically, Renata raced around the room like a trapped animal, trying to figure out if there was any way to gain access outside of the classroom, but there was nothing. She scratched at the walls, hoping there was something hidden, but nothing revealed itself, leaving her to feel utterly defeated as she sank to the floor and started to cry. She remained on the floor, hiding in one of the corners of the classroom for what felt like hours until the door opened again.
Her mother returned causing Renata to start shaking, but Alcina approached her with a warm smile.
"Renata, come with me, it's almost time for bed."
Renata shook her head before looking around and listening outside of the classroom, trying to figure out where Adelmo was since he had not returned with her.
"Where's Al?"
"He's already in bed."
"You hurt him, Mamma," Renata whispered at her, a tone of disgust in her voice, " you hurt him."
"No, I was helping him, and I was helping you," Alcina told her, "your brother gets too distracted and that only distracts you. We can't have your brother being a bad influence on you, Renata and now Adelmo understands that. Come with me now, it's almost time for bed."
She held her hand out at the time, which Renata seemed hesitant about taking, but eventually gave in. Pulled up to her feet, Renata followed her mother out of the room, however, as they walked along, Renata noticed right away that they passed her bedroom.
"Mamma-"
Trying to pull back, thinking her mother had forgotten where her room was, Renata called out to her, trying to get Alcina to stop, but instead, she was yanked forward. Alcina's grip tightened around her wrist as Renata was pulled along, her feet dragging on the floor as she attempted to slow her mother down, but it didn't work.
"Mamma, where are we going!? Where are we going?!"
"Shhh, Renata, relax," Alcina spoke in an eerily gentle tone, " Mamma is here to make everything better for you. We cannot let your brother hold you back."
The back door was open and Renata's bare feet touched the cold, wet grass as she was greeted by the evening air. She didn't understand what her mother was trying to tell her, but she couldn't focus on that, instead, she could only focus on the idea that she was being dragged towards the root cellar.
"Mamma, we're not supposed to go in there, I'm not allowed in there-" she was saying anything she could so that she could be released.
"Yes, you remembered the rules, Renata, but I am with you, which means that you are allowed in."
The door to the cellar was opened and Renata was pulled inside where she nearly stumbled over and fell. But Alcina kept a firm grip before bringing Renata over to sit in a chair before the room was illuminated by her mother's wand.
"Mamma, I'm sorry!" Renata sobbed, unsure of what was going to take place, but feeling such an overwhelming sense of fear. Her heart was racing in her chest, she was sweating, and her body continued to shake violently. "I'm sorry, I won't do it again!"
"I know you won't, sweetheart," Alcina smiled at her, " I'm going to make sure of it."
No longer having the ability to move as she was stuck in the chair, Renata watched with a wide-eyed and teary gaze as her mother walked over and then placed her wand to the side of Renata's head.
"You are my perfect little girl, did you know that?" Alcina asked her.
"Mamma, I'm sorry-" Renata cried, " I'm sorry! I won't do it again! I won't-"
The usual softness of her mother's hand felt as rough as sandpaper against Renata's skin as Alcina went to touch the side of her face.
"So perfect and yet your brother is trying to undo all of your hard work. He's always been trouble for you but I will not let him bring you down any more. You two need to focus on your academics-"
"MAMMA, PLEASE!"
Suddenly, there was the white light that emitted from the tip of Alcina's wand bringing Renata to squeeze her eyes shut and when she opened them again, she was still in the root cellar, but she was an adult again, surrounded by her parents and the other people she had yet to identify.
In pure horror, Renata looked back and forth between her parents, feeling shaken before, but nothing compared to what she felt at that moment.
"Is that what you did to us? Every time we did something you didn't like...you beat us and then took memories away from us? You implanted false memories or had them suppressed so we wouldn't remember?!" She screamed at them. "How could you do that to us? How could you hurt us-"
"The pain was temporary compared to what it could have been following the foolish actions that you and your brother performed," Nencio replied as he took a step towards her. " We do it because we care. There are so many temptations and distractions in the world that lead people down the wrong path and it is a waste of their potential. Look at how successful you and your brother are becoming with our help. Adelmo wouldn't have been anywhere near successful as he is today if it weren't for us-"
"He still needs our help," Alcina interjected, " plagued by impure thoughts of men, distracts him from his work. And he is so incredibly intelligent, he needs to pass his genetics along. He needs a wife and child-"
"Adelmo is happy with Sirius!" Renata spat at them. "He's very happy back in London, with Sirius, working at St Mungo's-"
"That happiness is only temporary," Nencio told her, " just like your happiness with the widower and his son was temporary before you dismissed from his home. You don't need a broken man and his son, you need your own husband and-"
"HOW DARE YOU CALL JAMES POTTER A BROKEN MAN IN FRONT OF ME!"
The chains around her wrists and legs rattled violently causing the two people that stood on either side of her to take a step back each.
"Don't you ever insult him or Harry in front of me again," she hissed in the direction of her parents, "and Adelmo is not plagued by impure thoughts. He does not need a wife. He is perfect the way he is, in fact, he found someone who thinks he's absolutely perfect and that should be more than enough for the two of you if you truly loved him as your son. You should be happy for what we accomplish on our own, not with what you two have created by meddling with our minds."
With a simple nod of her head, Alcina had the room clear out, everyone leaving including Renata's father, which only left the two women alone.
"Mamma, how could you do this, how could you think this is-"
Suddenly, Renata's face was grabbed roughly between her mother's fingers that dug into the skin of her cheeks.
"You listen here, Renata, I have worked continuously with you and your brother since you two were born in order for you two to be successful in life and this is how you repay me?"
"You haven't done it just to us have you?" Renata countered. "There are multiple families, all of the students that attended the Accademia, they've all been a part of this, haven't they?! Is that why we only end up in four positions? Teaching, the Ministry, Law Enforcement, and Healing?"
"And the magical world of Italy has never been better," Alcina smiled, "everything runs perfectly. Our Healers are efficient, we surpass other countries with our intellects, our Ministry and Law are world renown. People look up to us, we are the prime example. They all want to be like us. Why do you think your brother was recruited by so many different hospitals when he left school? His healing surpasses anything those other countries have. We have the best and people want the best, Renata. You'll see, when you finish up your Auror training, people will be attempting to get in contact with you. Other ministries and forms of government, globally will be contacting you to work with them."
"I don't want to be an Auror."
Alcina let out a laugh, but it wasn't one out of amusement, in fact, she sounded extremely angry.
"Don't be foolish-"
"I'm not being foolish! I don't want to be an Auror! I don't want to be an Auror!" she repeated it over and over, causing the wine bottles in the room to shake and nearly go on the verge of breaking. "It was never my dream. It was a dream that you and Papà picked out for me. But it's not my dream."
She watched as Alcina's nostrils flared and for a minute, Renata thought she was finally getting through to her mother, but all she had really managed to do was piss her off royally. Within seconds, Alcina pointed her wand directly at Renata's chest and there it was, the blinding white that took over as Renata was struck with the Cruciatus Curse.
The splitting feeling in her head returned ten-fold and she screamed out in agony as she fell back with the chains giving her limited ability to roll around as she tried to escape the pain. She felt like she had been thrown into the fireplace as her skin burned terribly as she begged her mother to stop. But through her Auror training, before she was dismissed, Renata remembered plenty about the Cruciatus Curse. She remembered, that the pain wasn't physically real, it was just her pain receptors being stimulated.
It was the fight of her brain to override the spell, knowing that normally when people were struck with the spell, they were too focused on the pain to focus on anything else and she could definitely feel why. Her body contorted in all sorts of twisted positions in order to escape the pain, but nothing seemed to offer any sort of relief. It felt like ages since her mother had attacked with the curse and Renata wondered just how long she was expected to endure the pain.
Suddenly, she was released as Renata could feel that her clothing was soaked with sweat, her breathing shaky and heavy. The sounds of her mother's footsteps approached before standing near Renata's head and peering down at her.
"You will become an Auror, Renata."
"I won't."
Despite the fact that she was placed under the curse again, Renata was relentless when it came to giving in to her mother's wishes. It all would have come to an end, if she merely agreed and claimed she wanted to be an Auror, but she refused and she was attacked again and again before she could barely move from where she laid on the floor. Alcina knew that long exposure to the curse would cause irreversible damage and while her temper had the best of her, she decided to leave Renata alone in the root cellar, claiming she would return later to deal with her.
Left in the dim lighting of the dwindling flame of one lantern, Renata attempted to curl her body up into a tight ball, but her legs were kept restrained. A sob passed through her lips as the pain of the curse had retreated but Renata was feeling all sorts of other pain. Her hands were cramping from where she had balled her fists up so tightly to endure the curse, leaving her to open up her fingers as slowly as she could.
In one of her hands, the photo of Harry fell out and onto the floor, crumbled up from her squeezing it. However, with shaky hands, she reached out and carefully opened it and attempted to smooth it out to get a glimpse of Harry.
