Chapter Sixty-Seven

While the majority of the hospital attackers had been subdued, it gave Renata and the others a chance to actually think for a moment about what their next plan of action was going to be. She could see the confusion and pain on Adelmo's face as he had come to realise everything their parents had done to them, even as children. It was horrible to think that the people that they were supposed to trust the most were the ones that had caused the most pain and damage. And while some would have found bigger numbers to be comforting in some aspects, to know that there were others that were in their same situation, it was overall a terrible predicament to be faced with.

Renata had to wonder though if their parents had been subjected to the same practices by their own parents during their youth. If it had been carried on for decades, there was no telling and it was very possible that for Alcina and Nencio, along with the other families, that the tortured practices were just viewed as the norm. Maybe it didn't come across as wrong to them, even if society didn't view it as right. She shuddered to think that if it weren't for meeting James and Sirius, Renata would have continued to believe that her parents were good people. She had only believed them to be stricter, but still loving.

However, after a night spent in torture and left in the root cellar before almost having her memory altered again, Renata couldn't see her parents as loving anymore. What they had done and what they still planned on doing was unforgivable in Renata's eyes. Alcina didn't seem to understand the concept of love, she only seemed to be warped by the idea of how everything, including her own children, had to be perfect. She didn't grasp the idea that nothing in the world was perfect, no matter how much she altered the minds of people, they were never going to be perfect.

She deemed the ones that had lost their minds as weak, without realising just how much those people had probably gone through. Remembering how painful it was to go through each memory, having to question what was real versus what wasn't and then being faced with the idea that it was one's own family that put them through such trials, who could blame the people that had gone mad? The witches and wizards that had taken their own lives, probably couldn't cope with everything they had uncovered, it didn't make them weak, it was too much for them to handle once everything came flooding back to them.

And for those that had actually killed their families, it was probably the only way that they would ever feel safe again. Knowing that the people that hurt them the most couldn't hurt them anymore. They probably only found those choices to be their only options once everything unravelled and Renata wished she had uncovered things sooner to help them. But some of them had been long before the time she was capable of making any difference. And maybe they didn't have the support that Renata and Adelmo had found within James, Sirius, and the others they had the honour of meeting back in England.

"What do we do now, Renata?" Adelmo asked her, looking to his little sister to lead into the next battle, whatever that was going to turn out to be. "What's next?"

"I don't know," she answered truthfully, " I don't know what we can do next. You saw how many showed up here, this isn't even all of them. It also means that Mamma and Papà are aware that at the very least that I know what is going on. They are probably the ones that sent a swarm here because they knew I was going to come for you. They probably have Florence on lockdown and if they have word that James and Sirius are here...who knows how far this man-hunt is going to spread."

"Then that means we have to go to the source of all of this," James interjected, " we have to deal with your parents. It's not going to stop until we do, if they have this much control it's not just going to end. Even if we all left to return home right now, who's to say they won't show up in the middle of the night for another attack again to bring you two home?"

"You're right," Adelmo agreed, " they've been relentless this long, it seems they never had any intentions of letting Renata and I stray away for too long. And as long as they are alive, they'll probably never stop."

"Are you suggesting that we have to kill them?" Sirius asked in a solemn tone as he had been placed back down on his own two feet. "Because that's definitely what it sounds like."

"Can't we get the Ministry involved?" James questioned. He had been surrounded by death for too long, he really didn't want to think about people dying, even if the Abate parents were terrible people.

"They've probably infiltrated the Ministry," Renata finally spoke again, " we don't know how long these practices have been going on. For all we know, the Minister might be under the control of the people from the academy. After all, she did not graduate from the academy, but her advisors and people in the higher positions are alumni. It's very possible that they altered her memories for control. In order to get the Ministry cleared, we're going to have to have the International Confederation interfere. It's going to call for an entire investigation."

It grew silent as no one knew what to say or had been able to come up with a plan as it seemed they were surrounded in every direction that they turned in.

"We do know a higher-up," Sirius chimed in at one point, " James and I know Albus Dumbledore personally. We served on the Order with him and he is the Supreme Mugwump, which means he is the head of the International Confederation. We can go to him and get some help, after all, the Ministry themselves back home owe me a favour anyways."

All eyes set on Sirius, as James was the only one really knew when it came to what he was talking about. It left Sirius to let out a sigh as he looked somewhat shameful about the topic.

"I was arrested and nearly sent to Azkaban without a trial because Peter Pettigrew tried to put the blame on me for his own crimes. Between Dumbledore and the Ministry, they owe it enough to me to get involved in this matter. Not to mention, if people from the academy are being placed in jobs globally, especially in powerful positions, this is an international matter. We can't have a following of people who were brainwashed all over..."

He peered over at Adelmo and Renata, both of them looking down as if the entire situation or any part of it was their fault.

"You two shouldn't blame yourselves for any of this," he said to them, " all of you were betrayed by your families. They were supposed to protect you and unfortunately, they didn't do that. I know that feeling and it's always easy to blame yourself before blaming others, but I'll be the first to tell you, just like how James was the first person to tell me, that it isn't your fault."

"But what are we planning on doing? Just up and leaving?" Adelmo huffed. "After everything that has happened, I can't just leave and hope that your Ministry or this Dumbledore fellow will follow through to help. Who knows if we're going to walk back into an ambush or not when we get there? I wasn't the only person from the academy working in London, which is where your Ministry is located. If the word was sent out to them, things could have already been altered."

"Adelmo's right," Renata said, " our mother said that people all around the world have requested graduated students. Which means that they are pinpointed in positions of power and always ready when they need to be. We have to go to the source if we're going to put an end to all of this. Our mother is the headmistress, that's where this practically all starts and my father, I'm sure is the one who has his hands pulling the strings on the Ministry here. It's why I was able to get back into the Auror training so quickly. It's probably why all these Aurors showed up. We're all probably all public enemies right now."

James couldn't believe just how widespread everything was becoming in such a limited amount of time. Back when Sirius had first brought the idea of a cult to his attention, he truly thought Sirius was full of shit. But as the evidence continued to stack in the favour that things were certainly wrong, along with actually meeting the horrible woman that was Alcina Abate, he had no trouble in believing that they really were attempting to make perfect people by the means of brainwashing and torture when they were children. However, James didn't think it was going to blow up as big as it did.

It wasn't an overnight thought that only affected a few people, it was all over the world and the people that had put the plan in motion had calculated everything in such a precise manner. The only downfall was, the human mind was powerful, in some cases, more powerful than magic. People were remembering what had taken place, which placed a crack into the picture of perfection. He and Sirius had helped Renata and Adelmo realise what was taking place, but it wasn't even close to being over.

"So we have to take care of Alcina and Nencio, is that it?" James questioned. "We, at least, have to take them into our custody before they cause any further harm. That's what we're all agreeing upon, correct?"

Renata looked unsure, knowing that it was going to really be their only option, but at the same time, while she was angry with her mother and father, finding them to be absolutely heartless, the idea of them actually being taken down, it left her feeling odd. Perhaps it was because she still loved her parents in her own weird way. Planted with possible false memories of good times, Renata had grown to develop the idea that she loved her parents. She had found them to be strict but she still believed she loved them. But she had to come to terms that they didn't love her or Adelmo, or if they did, by no means was a healthy type of love.

"Ren?"

Looking over at James, she could feel a lump develop in her throat before she gave a nod of her head. But he could see it, he didn't need to be an empath to know that she was conflicted with her own feelings towards the situation. She had gone so long believing that her parents were good and loving people, only to discover that they were actual monsters.

"It's going to be alright, Ren," he reassured her, "everything is going to be taken care of. And what you and Adelmo need, along with the others that were affected by all this, they're going to find help for it too. I promise."

With that, the entire group looked to one another silently, each of them making eye contact as their own way of agreeing to the plan. They were going to go to the Abate household and hopefully if Alcina and Nencio were still there, they were going to take them down and hold them responsible for their crimes. No words were spoken, but Renata held her hand out to James to have him accompany her in side-apparition, while Adelmo did the same for Sirius.

As soon as both couples locked hands, they vanished from the hospital, leaving the quicksand victims to remain in place until further help arrived.

Unsure if their parents had called for reinforcements to the home, Renata and Adelmo made sure to keep their distance from the house itself, only to approach with caution. Since James and Sirius were unfamiliar with the layout of the home, they had to rely on the other two to lead the way. But as they approached one of the windows, Renata peered in, only to become confused by the scene of her father pouring tea casually as her mother had her back turn towards the window as she sat on the sofa.

It was as if nothing was wrong, all of it was too still, quiet, and calm for Renata's liking as she was sure that her parents were aware of what was taking place.

"What are they doing?" Adelmo asked the question that was on everyone else's mind as they waited off to the side. With a shake of her head, Renata glanced over at them and gave a shrug of her shoulders.

"They're just sitting down and having tea," she said, reading the puzzled expressions that appeared on their faces. "They have to be up to something. But I didn't say anyone inside waiting to ambush us if we entered. It's just them."

Not to mention, no one had approached them while they were hiding on the side of the house in open view. None of it was making sense to Renata, but it seemed Adelmo was coming to terms with the game that their parents were trying to play.

"There probably isn't an ambush waiting," he whispered, "they probably wanted us paranoid when we entered. It's probably just the two of them inside like we're seeing."

"But why would they leave themselves so exposed?" James questioned. "They would have to know that at least one of you was going to come for them, right? Unless they counted on you two being captured again."

"No," Adelmo shook his head, " as much as I hate to admit it, in some ways, our parents know us too well. They probably assumed at the very least that Renata would be able to get away or they anticipated everything that has happened so far. It's terrible, but they are both incredibly smart and they are strategists, meaning they think a lot of things through with multiple outcomes."

"But to just sit there-"

"It means they want us to go inside for a confrontation," Renata added, " they probably have something up their sleeve to try and make us bend to their will. I'll go in first-"

"Ren, no!" James protested right away. "We already agreed that we were all going to remain together and no one was going on a solo mission-"

"No, it's not a bad idea," Adelmo said, " after all, Renata is the favourite. She's valuable to them more than me. And our mother hates the two of you. They may have subjected Renata to the two curses, but they wouldn't physically attempt to hurt her. If anything, it's all psychological warfare. Once we figure out what they are going to use against her, we can come up with a counter-attack. But we need Renata to go in first and we need her to go alone."

James didn't like the idea at all, but it seemed he was going to be out-voted regardless. Renata looked at him and flashed him a reassuring smile, one that was telling him that everything was going to be alright in the long run. Picking herself up from her crouched position, she agreed that she was going inside before making her way around the corner to go in.

The familiar sensation of her heart pounding in her chest, was almost deafening as she couldn't hear anything else as she entered the home. She placed her wand up her sleeve and made her way to the living room, where her parents seemed to be waiting on her. As she appeared in the doorway, her father didn't even flinch in the slightest as he spotted Renata. Instead, he lifted up two teacups to carry over where Alcina was sitting.

"Would you care to join us for some tea, Renata? It's fresh and hot," Nencio called over to her in a light voice, like nothing was wrong.

"No!" Renata snapped in his direction. "This all needs to come to an end right now! I know what you've been doing and so does Adelmo. I know how far this has spread and needs to stop, all of it. The International Confederation is going to get involved, which means your time is limited. It's time to just turn yourselves in for your crimes."

She stood there, waiting for them to say something, even if it was just words of protest or telling her that she was foolish. However, she only watched from where she stood as they didn't appear the slightest bit fazed.

"Did you two hear me?!" she raised her voice at them. "I'm not fooling around, I-"

"Renata, keep your voice down!" Alcina whispered harshly as she looked over her shoulder and the back of the sofa. "Or you'll wake him up"

Opening her mouth to argue, Renata stopped, nearly choking on the breath she inhaled as she became overwhelmingly confused by what her mother had said. But rather than saying anything, Renata walked from the doorway approaching the sofa, only to gasp in horror at what she was witnessing.

In Alcina's arms, there was Harry, sound asleep.

She went to race forward to grab him and take him as far away from Alcina and Nencio as possible, but instead, Renata came to a screeching halt as Alcina removed one arm that had been cradling Harry, and placed her wand to his head.

"Mamma! No! Don't hurt him! Please!"

Alcina peered up with a smile as she faced her daughter, leaving Renata to feel foolish for ever feeling hesitant earlier when faced with the idea of taking her parents down. Now she realised she should have done it sooner.

"All this trouble, Renata," Alcina spoke, " just for this boy. I thought the widower was the actual problem, but it seems like I was mistaken. It all comes down to this child, he can make you or break you. And I guess it's time to break you, sweetheart."

"MAMMA! NO!"
