Chapter Seventy-Three
Unfortunately for Renata, waking up to a stranger looming over her had set her into a panic and the Healers had to work quickly to sedate her temporarily so that she didn't end up hurting any of them or more importantly, hurt herself. They wouldn't allow James and Harry to enter the room until she was fully calm and resting in the bed again. James feared that they were going to induce her again due to her reaction, but he held out a little bit of hope that they would allow her to remain awake long enough so that they could see her. She was probably beyond confused and James wanted to be the one to explain everything to her.
But he definitely understood if the Healers came out and told him that it wouldn't be in Renata's best interest if he visited that day. While Harry bounced about in his arms, extremely happy as he believed he was going to go play with Renata, James wished he could just explain to Harry that Renata was not going to be up to playing, at least, not anytime soon. Yet, at the same time, Harry looked so happy and it was the first time in weeks that he had actually been full on smiling and clapping his hands together.
Finally, a Healer came out and James was expecting the worst, he was expecting the Healer to tell him and Harry to go home because they would not be able to visit with Renata anymore for the rest of the day.
"Alright," the Healer said, wiping his brow and looking a bit strained from having to deal with all the yelling and screaming that had taken place several minutes prior, " she's calm now. Took a bit of talking her down, she woke up when Samuel was moving her onto her side and she thought he as a stranger trying to attack her. But Renata knows where she is now, she's relaxed as we gave her a draught to subdue her movements a bit."
"What does that mean? Is she back asleep? Did you all induce her again-"
"No, nothing of the sort, Mr Potter, she's awake, " the Healer smiled, " her reactions might be a bit slow and she may not be fully aware of everything going on around her but that's just to keep her calm. She hasn't used her muscles in weeks, we don't want her putting any strain on her body or hurt herself. So she's conscious but her motions will be limited for the most part, we'd like to keep it that way until we can get her properly moving."
"And her memories, what about those? Did she recall anything from her childhood?" James questioned. "The stuff that her parents sur-"
"We will get to that in due time with counselling, Mr Potter, for right now, it's best not to bring up everything at once. I think she will just be thrilled to see you and Harry. This is a process involving baby steps, we'll take a small step a day and see how she progresses. Some days will be better than others."
James nodded his head, he wasn't trying to come across as pushy, he wasn't a Healer by any means, it was just his own anxiety that wanted Renata to come home as soon as possible. In his mind, he was almost as optimistic as Harry was. Now that she was awake, he figured it wouldn't be so long until she could come home, but he was learning that it still wasn't the case.
"Do you still want to go inside for a visit?"
Seeing as James wasn't responding for a few moments, the Healer wondered if it was too much for the man, however, James quickly nodded his head to answer the question before adjusting Harry in his arms. He told Harry that they were going to go visit Mummy, in which Harry cheered until James said that they had to be a little bit quieter since Renata needed to rest. Harry immediately responded by whispering, showing James that he was ready to go inside.
As they entered the room, Harry squirmed to be placed down and James allowed it as he followed closely behind him. The remaining Healers cleared out, allowing the family to have some privacy as James reached Renata's bedside once more. As he sat himself down, Renata's eyes were closed and he wondered if she had fallen back asleep. However, as Harry climbed up onto the bed, he placed his hand over Renata's and whispered.
"Mummy?"
Her eyelids fluttered at the sound of Harry's voice and very slowly, they opened taking to look around the room until she spotted both Harry and James. Instantly, a warm smile drew across her lips and a small, but happy cry escaped from her before she spoke.
"You two are here," she said, sounding somewhat surprised, but also relieved at the same time, " that's so great. I'm so happy. When I woke up, there was a man standing next to my bed, I think I scared him more than he scared me."
Her voice was incredibly light as she spoke, almost wispy and airy, as if it could be carried away by the lightest breeze of wind. Not to mention, she didn't keep her eyes open very long but she as talking to them, responding and that's all that mattered to James at the moment. He reached out a hand and smoothed it over the top of her head, brushing the hair out of her face.
"How are you feeling, Ren?" he asked her.
"Light," Renata answered, " I feel like I'm a cloud right now, just drifting along in the sky. How are you feeling, James? Are you feeling cloudy too?"
The fact that she called him "James" was enough for him to want to celebrate even further, especially since he had been fearful that for some reason she was going to revert back to calling him "Mr Potter." He didn't know what to expect when she woke from the coma, the Healers didn't have a clear answer, claiming that a lot of things were possible and that was not reassuring to him at all. But to have her awake, able to recognise him, and address him by his first name, that was more than enough for James.
"Well, I don't think I feel very cloudly, but I'm doing a lot better now that you're awake, " he said, "I've missed you a lot, Ren, and so has Harry."
Renata's eyes opened again and this time, she looked at Harry, who had been sitting so patiently and quiet on one side of the bed. It was almost like he was waiting for her to acknowledge him. She turned her head and her fingers moved about under the hand that Harry's was resting over before she reached one finger up to poke him lightly in the knee. He reacted with his own grin as he grabbed her finger with both of his hands to hold it, thinking she was about to start playing with him. But as much as she wanted to, Renata found herself with only a little bit of energy and it was taking a lot out of her just to remain awake and interact.
"How long have I been like this?" she brought herself to ask, unsure if she truly wanted the answer. "I know I'm in St Mungo's but how long as it been?"
James was hesitant about answering, yet at the same time, he knew that Renata had a right to know, he wasn't going to disclose everything with her right away as advised by the Healers, but if she had a question, he wanted to answer it for her.
"Almost a month," he answered quietly, " you spent some time in Italy before you were transferred here. But you've been induced for about a month, it's already September."
Suddenly, she let out a loud sigh before sharing in a light chuckle with herself. "Oh, that's it? Thank goodness," she replied, " I was thinking it might have been years. Harry looks taller to me right now."
"Well, that very well could be because you're laying down," James smiled, " but I assure you, it's only been about a month. And I've been here with you every single day, just to make sure that everything is alright and just in case you woke up. But it seemed the trick was to bring Harry-"
"I could hear you," Renata said cutting him off, leaving James' eyes to widen behind his frames, " I could hear the things you said to me. They didn't make too much sense, but now it all makes sense to what you were saying. I don't know why you were a dragon though."
Unsure of how to respond since he didn't know why he was a dragon either, James was left speechless for a couple of minutes. He was happy to hear that Renata could hear what he had been saying to her every day as he made it a point to talk to her as much as possible. It seemed it had worked out as a comfort to both of them as Renata could hear him and James spoke to her as if she were awake and conscious. He would fill her in on things that Harry did or other things that were taking place in the outside world.
"Was I Swedish Short-Snout in your mind?" he asked her with a playful tone which brought her to laugh before she gave the slightest shake of her head.
"No, you were a Romanian Longhorn," she opened her eyes, just to give him a wink before they closed again, " a dragon with glasses. I wish I could have been able to take a picture of it and bring it with me. Harry was there too, he's been with me for a long time, although I thought I was in the afterlife. It was so dark in the beginning and I couldn't do anything, I was just...there. Then Harry showed up and we would go on all these amazing adventures all over the world."
To think that Renata believed she was dead, only brought James back to the moment where he had thought the same thing. When he held her in his arms after checking her pulse only to find nothing and to have her completely still in his hold. It was one the worst, if not, the worst experience of his life, a pain he never wanted to live through again. He was glad that Renata's eyes were closed at the time because he didn't want her to see the tears that had formed in his eyes rather quickly and had already fallen.
At the same time, he was happy that during her unconscious state that she had found peace with Harry in her company. Even if she believed it to be the afterlife, it had been a happy experience for her, rather than it being painful or frightening.
"One day, we went to Romania to see the dragons," Renata continued, " as we came upon you as a dragon. You started talking to me, telling me that everything was going to be alright. Like I said, I didn't understand, but I understand now. I came to see you everyday, I guess just like how you came to see me everyday. I'm glad you and Harry were there with me, I don't think it would have been as nice as it was without the two of you there. Thank you."
"You don't have to thank us, Ren," James told her, "I think we're both just thankful that we could be there for you in anyway that we could."
Harry seemed to establish that Renata wasn't going to be able to play that day with him, but the adults didn't realise just how happy he truly was to see her. And since he had been able to find her again, he didn't want to risk losing her or having her disappear on him again. As Renata and James spoke to one another, Harry used his strength to lift the dead weight of Renata's arm and placed himself into her side before pulling her arm over him as if to say that he was staying with her no matter what.
James was about to tell Harry not to get too comfortable as he knew what sort of fight his son was going to put up once he announced that they had to leave. But the look on Renata's face along with the paired "shh" advised him not to and just to leave Harry be for the time being. They didn't need Harry causing a fuss, not to mention, it was nice to feel him cuddled up into her side, reminding her of the afternoon naps they were share in when she was home.
"Will I be able to go home today?" she asked James. "Now that I'm awake?"
He didn't want to answer her and it seemed he didn't really have to, since he looked down, that was all Renata seened to see to come to her own conclusion.
"Oh."
"They just want to make sure that you're going to be alright, Ren," James said, " it was a lot for you to undergo. Not just with the injuries sustained from you going under the curse that long, but you know...the other stuff as well. They've been working around the clock with you and the others to make sure that everything goes as smooth as possible. Trust me, I want you to come home too, but we just have to be sure that you're going to be alright. But now that you're awake, you're so much closer to coming home."
"I guess that makes sense, " she whispered with a nod of her head, " after seeing everything that my parents hid from me and Adelmo, I could see-...wait, Adelmo? Adelmo and Sirius, are they alright-"
"Relax, relax!"
Pushing himself up, James leaned forward towards her as her voice hit a higher octave in panic over Adelmo's and Sirius' whereabouts. He didn't want her to get upset and have the Healers cut the visit short, especially now that she awake.
"Adelmo and Sirius are alright," he reassured her, " I promise. Sirius is probaly home right now getting some rest, he's been here almost every day too. When we were back in Italy, Adelmo had to be induced as well. In fact, every student that they've come across has been, just so they can help you all handle your memories. It's been a long process since the International Confederation got involved and when the investigation launched-"
He stopped himself from going into it any further as Renata's eyes were open and she looked quite alert. It wasn't his intention to work her into a frenzy over the events, but he realised what the Healers were getting at when they stated that everything needed to be done in baby steps.
After he stopped talking, it grew quiet for a couple of minutes with Renata still awake and looking around, trying to process everything that she had heard.
"What happened to Mamma and Papà?" she asked finally. "I guess I shouldn't even call them that, they don't deserve it. But what happened to them? Were they arrested?"
"Ren, I don't think right now is the appropriate time to go over this. You just woke up and we'll have plenty of time to discuss it-"
"Please?" Renata interjected. "I want to know what happened. All I can remember is fighting my mother before everything went dark after she called out the Killing Curse. I must have deflected the spell off to the side-"
She could see the expression on James' face and she had to assume that she was wrong leaving her confused. It looked as though he really didn't want to tell her but after stealing a glance in the direction of the doorway, James cleared his throat efore speaking again.
"Ren, listen to me, during the struggle, you did what you had to do. She was going to kill you and Adelmo assumes that just as Alcina called out the curse that you managed to get the upper hand and turn the wand back on her. Alcina is dead and before that, to prove a point to me, she killed your father. She was going to kill all of us, including you and Adelmo to keep everything quiet about what was going on. I'm sorry but..."
He didn't know what to say beyond that, he wasn't sorry that Alcina was dead as the woman was insane and had attempted to hurt and kill all of them. However, at the same time, he didn't know what thoughts were running through Renata's head as she laid there in bed quietly.
After a few moments, she peered down at Harry, who had actually fallen asleep, resting into her side before turning back to James.
"You don't have to leave right away, do you? I don't want to be left alone."
Suddenly, James was reminded of one of the first times after Renata had come into their lives and how he had begged her to stay, desperate enough that he was willing to pay her whatever he needed to.
"I'm not going anywhere, Ren, you're not going to be alone, I promise. All you have to do is ask or tell me what you want me to do."
It seemed she remembered her own words that he recited back to her as the corner of her lips curled upward in a small smile. Using most of her strength, she moved Harry over on the small bed before moving over herself. And James watched as she patted the open spot next to her, inviting him to lay down with them. Obviously she knew that he couldn't stay there overnight and she didn't expect them to, especially all three of them sharing a small hospital bed.
She knew that James would have to eventually go home and Harry would have to go with him.
"Stay with me," she requested, " Just until I fall asleep."
