Chapter Four

Renata believed that it was partially her fault that James had walked away with a visibly upset look on his, although she wasn't sure what she had done. Minutes before he had been laughing, just like his son, and then as he stood before everyone, there was a change to where he looked absolutely broken on the inside. She didn't know if it was in good taste to tell him that she was sorry for the loss of his late wife, some time had gone by since the incident, but she didn't know an ounce of the pain that James carried.

Turning to James' friend, Sirius, she continued to hold Harry in her arms as the child was sound asleep. Enzo was at her feet, keeping a protective eye on Renata to make sure that no one pulled any sort of funny business on his watch. He especially kept his eye on Sirius as he and Renata engaged in a conversation.

"I'm really sorry if I've made him upset," she apologised, knowing she had a tendency to do such a thing, " it really wasn't my intention to do so."

"No, you didn't make him upset," Sirius informed her, taking a moment to reassure Renata that nothing of what was taking place was her fault, " in fact, you should be proud of yourself. You actually managed to make him laugh, I haven't heard that in awhile."

It was true, Sirius knew that his friend was in grieving and in mourning, Sirius was still feeling it all as well. The ending of the war had come as such a blow to everyone fighting in it, some days, it was harder to come with reasons to smile when one could only think of all the pain they had gone through. For James, he had lost the love of his life and the more he dwelt on the idea of losing Lily, the more he believed that he had lost her long before her death. He carried the blame as if he were punished to carry the entire weight of the world on his shoulder.

There were days where Sirius would arrive at the Potter's home, only to find James going over all the things he could have done differently to ensure the safety of his family and the ones he cared about. He placed Lily's death on himself, even though Sirius had told him multiple times that it wasn't his fault. In fact, between James and Harry, they were the heroes of the war and people knew that. It was James who had discovered who was the traitor among the group and had saved so many from experiencing a life full of pain and even saved some from death.

It was Harry who had been left at the scene as the sole survivor of an attack brought on by the dark wizard, Voldemort. There was a lot to be celebrated about being in the presence of the two Potters, even if James didn't really think so. Day in and day out, the man was beating himself up over things that were out of control and it left him to just become miserable.

For the sake of Harry and even his friends, James tried to keep a smile on his face, but it wasn't exactly genuine. It was a forced smile and Sirius knew it all too well because, from the time that they were boys, Sirius had witnessed the smile and laughter of James Potter. He damn well knew what a genuine smile and laugh looked and sounded like.

"And you made this little one happy," Sirius continued as he nodded his head in the direction of Harry, " and that's what truly matters to James at this point."

"If there is anything I could do to help," Renata informed him, " please feel free to ask and you can tell him that as well."

The two of them looked over to where James was using a tree as support to hold himself up, staring at the ground for a few seconds before one of his hands reached under his glasses to wipe away a few stray tears that had fallen against his will.

She smoothed her hand over the top of Harry's hair, watching as the messy black hair flattened for a split second before jumping up in all different directions. It brought a smile to her face, watching as Harry was peacefully napping away, but she was sure that James didn't want to be at the park any longer. He didn't need to be there when he was feeling that upset, he needed to be in the privacy and comfort of his own home.

"Perhaps it would be best if goes home," Renata suggested to Sirius, " I don't think he needs to be here right now. Here, take Harry and take both of them home."

Sirius held his arms out to take Harry but no matter how slowly Renata moved to peel the child off of her, she still managed to wake him up. Immediately, Harry's small fingers tightened to the front of her blouse as if he was holding on for dear life. Grasped in between his fingers were several strands of Renata's hair, bringing her to lean her head down as he pulled. His lower lip trembled before he peered up at her with a watery green gaze.

Harry was making it quite clear that he did not want to be placed down by her, he liked where he was and he wanted to remain there.

"Come on now, Harry," Sirius said reaching his arms to try and take Harry from Renata, " it's time to go home. You have to let go."

Normally, Harry and Sirius got along beautifully, they were practically best friends and Harry always smiled in the man's company. However, that afternoon, he had made great friends with Renata and as Sirius tried to pull him away from the woman, Harry screamed bloody murder. Instantly, Sirius dropped his hands away, a bewildered look on his face, but also on Renata's as well.

They could only watch as the toddler adjusted himself back in Renata's hold and glared at Sirius for daring to try and take him away from her. It also didn't help that Enzo seemed to side with Harry and within seconds of Harry crying out, he was growling at Sirius' feet, looking fully prepared to go in for a bite.

Across the way, James had heard the scream and immediately, turned around to check and make sure that everything was alright. As he looked at Sirius and Renata in the distance, he could see that she was incredibly red in the face while Sirius looked frustrated. He continued to place a smile on his face while holding his arms out to Harry, but Harry would turn his head in the opposite direction, a clear pout on his face.

Thinking that Renata had to leave or somewhere else to be, James realised that he was going to have to intervene and pull Harry away, even if his son didn't like it. Wiping at his eyes once more and using the sleeve of his shirt to clean his face, James made his way back towards the scene, where Harry had a death grip on Renata's shirt and hair.

Upon seeing James return, everyone fell silent, even Harry looked over at his father and didn't make so much as a sound.

"Are you trying to leave?" he asked Renata, leaving her eye's to widen for a moment.

"Um, no," she shook her head, wincing in pain as she ended up pulling the few strands out of Harry's hand, " I just figured that since Harry was asleep that you'd want to bring him home. That's all. Of course, he's wide awake now, isn't he? It's fine."

Perhaps she was attempting to be polite, James figured, but he simply couldn't ask the woman to stand around in one place the entire day just for the sake of keeping Harry pleased.

"Harry," James held out his arms, " come on, we should be heading home."

"No," Harry told his father, " no home."

The popular "no" phase was making a reappearance within Harry for the time being as he buried his face right into Renata's chest, trying to make his point clear. All these moments were just adding up and James couldn't wait until Harry was old enough to tell these stories to him and embarrass the hell out of his son.

However, James wasn't going to give in to being told no by Harry, after all, he had to be the acting adult in the situation. Reaching out, one hand fell on either side of Harry's tiny torso and as soon as James went to lift him up, Harry started screaming again. Renata and Sirius flinched while Enzo only added to the problem by howling at Renata's feet.

It was quite the scene for others at the park to witness the match of James vs Harry, while no one else knew what to do.

James was clearly struggling as he hated the sound of Harry crying and Harry was definitely putting up an act in order to get what he wanted. He continued to scream and cry as if he were in terrible pain and it left James to let go and take a step back with a defeated look on his face.

Renata was never known for a stern-face or a strong voice as she was usually soft in both, however, seeing the look on James' face, it was almost as if she could feel his pain. He truly did look defeated and while Harry had made himself comfortable, the child couldn't be the one calling the shots and he certainly couldn't get what he wanted with that type of behaviour. Maybe she didn't have a lot of experience working with children, but she knew from her own raising by her parents of what was supposed to be allowed and what wasn't.

"That's enough!"

A sharp voice cut through the clearing, suddenly bringing an end to Harry's fake crying, and leaving everything to fall silent.

All eyes were suddenly on her, but she had turned her gaze to Harry at the time.

"Now, you listen here, Harry," she began, " I very much enjoyed the time we spent together today, however, this behaviour is not how you show your gratitude. It's time for you to go home and you will do so without causing a scene for your father, do you understand?"

Of course, Harry was only looking at her as if she had grown three heads in a matter of a few seconds, but in some ways her words registered with him, mainly through her tone and the look on her face. His fingers loosened their grip, enough that Renata was able to hold him out towards James with a triumphant look on her face.

James was speechless but found himself with Harry in his arms within seconds, the two of them staring at Renata as she reached down and lifted Enzo into her arms.

"It was truly a pleasure meeting all of you today," she said, "I haven't had this much fun in awhile. So thank you for that. Anyways, I should get going. Goodbye, James and Sirius and goodbye, Harry."

Harry's bottom lip was still trembling but he did not cry, even as he reached one of his hands out towards her.

"Nanata!"

"Merlin, he's pulling at the heartstrings now," Sirius groaned placing his hand over his heart. "James, please put an end to this."

"What? What am I supposed to do?" James asked with a confused look as he was struggling to hold Harry, who was fighting with all his tiny might to get to the woman who was walking away from them.

"I don't know! But look at that face!"

Turning Harry around, they were both a witness to the pouty lip and the stray single tear that slid down one of Harry's chubby cheeks.

"That is the same look that you pulled with McGonagall back when we were in school!" James whispered to Sirius. "Harry's been spending way too much time around you!"

"So be it, Prongs, but come on, look how much he enjoyed her company. Why don't you set something up? Maybe she could spend more time with Harry-"

"Spend more time?! Sirius, I don't know her!"

"Well, all friends start off as strangers!"

James couldn't believe what he was being told at the time, especially since they really didn't know anything about Renata except for her name really. But even then, there was no telling who she was or what her motives were. He was thankful that she had brought his son to smile but he wasn't looking to make any friendships at the time. Even his own friends weren't on speaking terms with each other, was it really a good idea to add anyone to the mix? However, looking down at Harry, Sirius was right, he really was pulling at the heartstrings.

He called her "Nanata" over and over, trying to turn around and look in the direction where the woman had been walking away. It seemed he really did have a marvellous time that afternoon in her company and she actually seemed to enjoy the time spent with him. Would it be too weird or too much to ask her to see Harry again as a sort of playdate? He just wanted Harry to be as happy as possible.

"Alright, alright," James sighed, giving in, " I'll see what I can do. Hey, Ren-"

He stopped after looking up, to see that Renata was gone, along with Enzo. All three of them were looking around, but the woman and her dog had disappeared from the area of the park. Within seconds, Harry lifted up his hand and waved at no one in particular.

"Bye-bye, Nanata."

When Adelmo returned from work later on that evening, he found Renata asleep on the sofa in his living room. Enzo, who had been resting in her lap immediately jumped down and ran over to greet him, leaving the man quite uneasy. The little scuffle of Adelmo trying to escape the greeting, brought Renata to stir as she opened her eyes and watched the scene in amusement.

"Well, good morning," Adelmo greeted her, once he saw that she was awake, " did you have a nice day?"

He settled down into an armchair as he saw a smile form on her face. Only to have Enzo leap into his lap happily.

"I did actually," Renata said, " it was rather eventful."

"Oh, tell me one good thing that happened then," he requested as he begrudgingly gave in and started petting Enzo.

"I met the Boy-Who-lived," Renata answered rolling onto her back and staring up at the ceiling, " he's a delightful little boy. Big smile and an even bigger laugh and then I met his father too. "

"And how is he?"

"He's barely surviving."
