Chapter Fifty-Two

As much as James had initially dreaded the idea of Harry needing glasses, he couldn't deny that when he saw Harry again, fitted with a pair of frames that it brought a sudden warmth to spread in his chest. Not that Harry would ever be able to recognise it, but there were many instances where he resembled the late Fleamont Potter. It brought him to smile because even though his father didn't live long enough to meet Harry, James had that comfort that Fleamont still lived on, in parts of him and in parts of Harry. The same thing with Euphemia, because while everyone claimed that Harry had Lily's eyes or resembled his father, it was James who could point out his parents with his son.

Such as the messy hair that everyone assumed was James' messy hair, however, James distinctly remembered his mother complaining about Fleamont's "lazy curl" in the back of his head several times.  The lock of hair that she referred too was wavy until it reached the end and then created a tight curl that just made it pop out because it was shorter in comparison to the rest of his hair.

If Fleamont attempted to cut it off, it would grow back in the span of overnight, very much like the rest of his hair and when James spotted the same curl in Harry's hair, he couldn't help but laugh. He only wished that Fleamont and Euphemia had lived long enough to meet Harry or spend some time with him because he knew they would have adored everything about their grandson.

Although maybe they wouldn't like his temper tantrum behaviour that everyone was a witness to since Harry had been fitted for the glasses. It didn't matter how firm Renata and James were with him, Harry didn't give a shit, he really didn't want to wear the glasses. With every opportunity, he would rip them off his face and throw them to the floor. Or if he was left alone for just a second, he would attempt to hide them throughout the house. Even though, his plans were always foiled because no matter what he did, Renata or James always ended up finding them within seconds.

They attempted to fix a strap to them so that he couldn't take them off but it only left Harry to panic as he couldn't get them off. He would scream bloody murder throughout the flat until one of the adults gave in and took them off. But they couldn't let Harry win, Renata made a point that if they let Harry win the battle that they were only going to reinforce the behaviour.

"If we keep letting him get away with screaming and kicking, he's going to keep doing it every time he doesn't want to do something," Renata said as James held the glasses in his hand, one morning trying to coax Harry into wearing them.

"So what should we do then?" James asked, looking up at her with a lost expression. "Should I get some sweets and offer it to him if he wears his glasses?"

"No, James" Renata offered a small smile, " that's bribery. Please don't bribe a three year old. That's just asking for trouble!"

"I don't see the problem with it, " he admitted.

She nodded her head and made her way over, collecting a sweet off the table and the pair of glasses.

"Are you planning on bribing Harry for the rest of your life to get him to do something? Every time you ask him to do something he's going to want something in return. It doesn't sound healthy. You're going to have to encourage him as a parent that this is what he needs to do."

"But Harry doesn't want to put the glasses on at all, so how do I get him to even consider it without forcing him or the sweets?"

"Harry can have sweets but he needs to have his glasses on already. You can show him that glasses are a nice thing. Have him associate them with something he likes, he might be more open to wearing them then."

"Um," James thought to himself for a couple of moments, because when it came to sweets, Harry loved all of them. "Oh! He really likes the Chocolate Frogs, he likes watching them hop around and he likes the cards inside. He'll stare at them for hours."

"We could use that, we'll make it a special occasion of him wearing his glasses and getting to play with chocolate frogs."

James nodded his head with the instruction of going out to get a Chocolate Frog or rather, a couple dozen.

As soon as he walked out of the door, Harry's crying ceased as he was confused as to where his father had left, but as he looked forward, he saw Renata sitting in front of him at the kitchen table. His little pair of frames were resting on the table beside her, leaving him to look back and forth between them and her. She made no motion towards them, she simply sat there, staring him down.

Suddenly, Harry wished that he hadn't been crying so much so that he could have possibly gone on the trip with his father or he wished that Remus or Sirius were there so that he could get out of the task. Because judging by the look on Renata's face, she was going to end up getting those glasses on his face, one way or another.

Meanwhile, Renata was attempting to come up with alternatives in her head, rather than just using the Chocolate Frogs with Harry. She tried to think of all the things that Harry really liked and when she looked outside, she made a grunting noise considering it was still raining out. Not that it was any surprise as it had been raining nearly every day that week.

She could only hope that the weather would hold up for the party that they would be throwing Harry next week as she thought it would be better to hold it outside. Renata also hoped that Augusta wouldn't be upset with her by then either because she really wanted Neville and Harry to celebrate their birthdays together, considering they were only a day apart in age. She had sent a couple of letters to Augusta, apologising about the incident, even though Sirius told her numerous times that it wasn't her fault.

However, all she wanted to do was make things right and if it meant taking the blame for the situation, Renata was willing to do it, she just wanted Neville to be able to play with Harry. Between him and Ron, they got along so well with Harry and he always enjoyed their company over at the home. She didn't want to see that ruined and if that had caused such an upset with Augusta, she couldn't imagine how upset James would be if he heard Harry slip.

But so far, it was almost like Harry knew the situation she was in because he never called Renata "Mummy" in front of James. He didn't mind saying it when they were alone or in the company of Sirius, but he always called her  "Nanata" when James was around.

"Mummy?" Harry called out to her in a small voice, dragging Renata out of her thoughts. It seemed he was testing the waters to see if he was in trouble with her. He pushed himself up from the floor and brought over one of his toys, a rubber duck, as a peace offering. Renata smiled with a chuckle, knowing just how smart the Boy-Who-Lived truly was as she placed out her hands and allowed the duck to be a gift.

"Oh, why thank you, Harry," she told him, " this is such a lovely duck. While you're over here, would you like to put on your glasses?"

Harry's face twisted as he quickly shook his head. "No glasses!" he yelled before running out of the kitchen and towards his room. Renata was just about to call after him when she heard the door slam and then she heard the faint sound of clicking as Harry had actually taken to locking his bedroom door.

"Cheeky little thing," she muttered to herself before settling back and waiting for James to return. It was only a couple of minutes until he did and just before he walked through the door, Renata knew exactly what she wanted to try first in order to get Harry to wear his glasses that afternoon.

As soon as James walked through the door, he was carrying a bag of Chocolate Frog containers in his hand, and he nearly jumped as Renata was right in the front hall waiting for him. He handed her the bag but she quickly set it aside, hanging it on a small hook where normally coats and jumpers were placed.

"James, do you happen to be ticklish?" she questioned him with a grin.

Suddenly, James grew very, very nervous as he was ready to walk back out the front door. "No," he answered quickly, " why?"

"Alright, good, I need you to pretend that you are though," Renata told him as they walked back inside. "Before we get into sweets, seeing as we don't want to ruin Harry's appetite now that he's actually trying different foods, I thought of a better method to get him."

"I wish you would have figured that out before I went out and had everyone stare at me for buy over thirty Chocolate Frogs."

"I'm sure they were just envious that they weren't invited to wherever they thought you were going with all of them," Renata said before suddenly running her hands up James' side. He let out a loud laugh before jumping back, only to see Renata folding her arms over her chest with a look.

"So, you're not ticklish?"

He was turning red as he didn't want to admit it, but he was extremely ticklish, nearly every part of him was ticklish to his sides, his neck, his armpits, even his legs.

"No, I'm not!" he insisted. "I just don't understand what we're doing here. I thought you wanted me to get the sweets!"

"I know," Renata said, " but then I was sitting here thinking to myself and I remembered all the things that Harry loves to do, especially when we can't go outside and play due to the weather. He loves tickle fights, but since he's gone and lock himself in his room to avoid putting the glasses on, we have to lure him back out."

"So, why can't I tickle you?" James challenged, wishing it was possible to lock himself in his room to avoid being tickled.

"Because I'm not ticklish."

He let out a scoffing noise thinking that she was lying just like him so that she didn't have to be the test subject. However, as he walked forward and started tickling her, she started laughing. It appeared they were both liars and they didn't want to be the one tickled, but rather be the one who did the tickling. James enjoyed the sound of her laughter, so he decided he was just going to keep at it, even though she tried to avoid him.

"How long do I have to tickle you?" he asked with a grin as he grabbed her before she could run. However, she placed her hands behind her and tickled his sides, making him laugh and let go at the same time.

"We just have to keep this up long enough until he comes out here."

James stopped, giving her an odd look. "And then what?"

"You'll see."

"Oh, will I?" he said with a playful growl before he started to chase her around the living room. Renata let out a small scream as she started running, but whenever James came too close to tickling her, she would turn around and tickle him just enough so that she could get away.

As planned, the noise definitely seemed to attract Harry's attention as he had taken to stubbornly sitting on his bed, while repeating "no glasses" to himself. However, he had heard the sound of his father return, followed by the sounds of laughter and playful yelling. Occasionally, there was the sound of something being knocked down and the adults started laughing even harder and it seemed whatever they were doing, Harry was missing out on all the fun.

He was attempting to wait it out, pretend that he wasn't very interested but as he heard his father laughing hysterically, he knew it had to be something really good, he never heard James laugh that hard.

Deciding to give in, Harry climbed off his bed and made his way to the door, turning the knob that popped the lock before opening the door and sticking his head out. He couldn't see either adult for a few seconds, but as soon as he saw Renata run past down the hall and James chasing her, a smile formed on Harry's face as he ran out to join in the chasing game. There was a sudden sound of crashing again as Harry reached the end of the hall, only to see James on the floor with Renata sitting on top of him with the upper advantage of being able to tickle him.

It seemed he was trying to get her off of him by tickling her back, but she didn't give up right away. If there were two things that Harry loved, it was being chased and being tickled, so he definitely wanted in on the game. Without realising, James had nodded his head slightly in Harry's direction, noting that he had entered the room. Renata didn't pay him any mind right away and instructed James to do the same.

As ever confusing as it was, James listened, hoping that her plan would work. He didn't look at Harry either as the two of them remained focused on one another, not that he was complaining because he did like the position he was in of Renata sitting on top of him. Harry came over, not quite sure why no one was paying him any mind. He tried to get them to play with him as he let out several laughs and took to running around the room. However, no one was chasing him and no one was tickling him, leaving Harry just as confused as his father if not more.

Finally, Harry had enough because he wanted to play too and made his way over to the adults before stepping on his father's chest to look Renata in the face.

"Plaaaay?" he tried to look as cute as possible, but Renata was not about to give him and start tickling. She saw James lifting up his hands as if he was about to go in for a sneak attack.

"James, you put those hands back down, right now," she whispered to him, "just wait!"

His arms flopped back down to his sides as he had to remain quiet and still during the stare off between Renata and Harry.

"Harry, would you like to play?" Renata finally asked him in a very calm voice.

"Yes! Yes!" Harry clapped his hands together and bounced up and down, causing James to let out a few gasps and groans as it was all weighing down on his chest. But he was definitely able to witness Renata go in for the kill.

"Put your glasses on," she said, pointing to the frames on the table, " and then you can come play. I only tickle those who wear glasses!"

It was the ultimate look of betrayal on Harry's face as he couldn't believe that Renata was trying to force the glasses on him once more. He made a face at her before yelling "no glasses" and then running out of the room. They heard the door slam before Renata gave a shrug of her shoulders.

"Looks like your plan didn't work, Chief," James told her, " now what?"

"Oh, it'll work," she smiled before tickling him again, "you'll see!"

The tickling commenced along with the laughter and the chase and suddenly, James came to a screeching halt at one point as he caught something out of the corner of his eye. He made a grab for Renata's sleeve to get her to halt in place as they both witnessed Harry making his way over towards the kitchen table. He climbed up the large wooden chair and retrieved his glasses and with a begrudging look, placed them on before making his way to them. A dramatic sigh escaped his lips as he stood before Renata and James with a pleading look.

"Play now?!"

James looked over at Renata, wondering if they were allowed to give in as Harry was wearing the glasses. She was still for a few seconds, but just when James was about to question what she was waiting for, she lunged at Harry, scooping him up in her arms before she started tickling him. Harry screeched with laughter and squirmed in her arms to be free so he could start running. Eventually, she placed him down and Harry took off for the chase to begin before Renata turned to James.

"That's how you do it, Mr Potter" she said with a teasing grin," without giving in. "

"Oh, I'll give you something!" James said before letting out a loud roar and chasing after her, causing Renata to scream and run towards where Harry was hiding.
