Chapter Fifty-Six

Millions of thoughts were running through Renata's head to the point where it was difficult to think straight or even process what had just happened. However, while her mind couldn't settle, she could definitely feel the pain in her chest as everything James had said was the equivalent of multiple stab wounds. She thought after the day before that everything had been handled and there wouldn't be any more issues revolving around the term "mummy" but she was so incredibly wrong. It wasn't just what James said that made it hurt, it was the way he had said it that made it all a hundred times worse. He was making it a point to Harry that she would never be his mother and bringing up Lily was the driving home factor.

In a way, she knew he was right, she wasn't Harry's mother, as much as she wanted to be. But the way he grew so upset over it, enough that he snatched the small shovel from Harry's hand and took to yelling at his son on his birthday, she would have never anticipated such a reaction. But he made it very clear, that she was "Renata" and nothing more, not even the nanny in the way he put it. And while all she wanted to do was leave the flat and just somewhere else, Renata couldn't bring herself to leave Harry right away.

The way he screamed as James attempted to apologise to him, she saw the fear in his eyes because his father had never acted in such a manner towards him. She didn't want Harry to be upset ever, but especially not on his birthday. It was supposed to be his special day and so far, it appeared as though it was ruined. As she made her way inside, she could hear Molly and Augusta calling after her, telling her to wait so they could speak with her, but she made her way to Harry's room and closed the door over.

Harry sat on his bed, crying as his face was red and his cheeks were wet from the tears. Already he had developed the hiccups that caused his entire body to jolt with each one. Making her way over to him, Renata knelt down before Harry in front of his bed and placed her hands on his knees.

"Harry, you don't have to be upset," she whispered to him, " you don't have to cry. It's alright. Your father was just being incredibly silly...mean...but silly. He's not angry with you, he's angry with me. It's all my fault and I'm so sorry I ruined your birthday. That was the last thing I ever wanted to happen, I wanted it to be perfect for you because you deserved it more than anything."

She was sure that he didn't understand anything she was really saying to him but offering a soothing voice as much as possible, she hoped that it would bring him to stop crying. He did eventually look up at her, leaving Renata to force a small smile on her face as she cleaned his face with her sleeve.

"See? No crying," she said, only to have Harry reach his little hand out and wipe away the stray tear that she had missed. His bottom lip still trembled and even through her smile, it looked as though Renata was going to break at any second. Before either one of them started to cry, she reached her arms out and Harry flung himself forward for a hug.

"I'm so sorry, Harry," she cried, unable to really hold herself back any longer, " I should have corrected you, I should have...I could have prevented all this from happening and I didn't. I didn't because I actually enjoyed you calling me "Mummy." I know it sounds weird or whatever they want to call it but I really did enjoy it. But your father is right, I'm not your mother, I wish I was, but I'm not and I never will be."

She could feel Harry's arms squeeze around her neck as he attempted to hug her even tighter and she held onto him for a few moments before she realised that she wasn't helping the situation. She was supposed to be comforting him, not relying on Harry for comfort. Taking a moment to wipe her face clean and pushing her hair back, Renata proceeded to grab Harry by his shoulders gently and pulled him away so that they were facing each other.

"Don't be upset with your father, Harry, " Renata told him, trying to keep a steady voice. "I want you to have a good rest of your birthday. You still have plenty of presents outside for you to open. Neville is here, Ron is here, and a whole lot of people are here to see and spend the day with you. You need to have fun, alright?"

"Mummy-"

"No, Harry," she shook her head, already feeling the burning sensation in her eyes once more. "No Mummy. I'm Renata. That's it. Not Mummy, not Nanny Nanata...just...Renata."

"NO NANATA! NO NANATA! MUMMY! MUMMY! " Harry screamed as she stood up and moved away from him. He was making it extremely difficult for Renata without realising it as she backed away towards the door. She opened it up to find Molly and Augusta outside of the door, waiting to speak with her, but she pushed through them, all the while, Harry was screaming "Mummy" after her.

As she reached the living room area, she could see James coming inside and that was leaving her in such a panic as all she could hear was Harry screaming out mummy from behind her. She didn't want James to be angry with her or with Harry, but she didn't know what to do. He started making his way towards her, but it was Adelmo that reached her first as he grabbed her arm and led outside through the front door.

He slammed the door behind them closed and for a moment, the Abate siblings were left to look at one another in the silence of the front steps.

"This is all my fault, Al," she said and before Adelmo could tell her she was wrong, she started making her way down the front steps. "All I've done since leaving school is fail. No matter what the job is, I manage to ruin everything. I couldn't become an Auror, I couldn't keep a job as a Welcome Witch and look what I've done now. I walked into their lives and ruined everything. I ruined Harry's birthday-"

"Renata, listen to yourself!" Adelmo called as he went after her. "You did no such thing! You planned the entire birthday party and Harry was having a wonderful time until James-"

"Until Harry called me his mother, which I didn't stop him doing before even though I'm not his mother. James is right, Molly was wrong. I'm not Harry's mother, I'm not fit to be a mother to anyone, look at me. I'm a fuckin' failure at everything! Mamma was right, I'm a fool."

"No, Renata, you're not a fool and you're not a failure. You're far from both and none of this is your fault. Harry called you his mother because you acted as a mother would for him. It's only normal for him to form such a bond with you and if James can't see that, he's the one in the wrong, not you. Mamma was not right and you know that...deep down, you know that she's not right. You're upset right now and that is definitely expected. So why don't we just go home, alright? We'll go back to my place, you can stay there for as long as you want. Enzo will be happy to see you..."

"What about my things? I have to go back and get-"

"I'll do it. You just go back to my flat. "

She looked unsure about leaving under his instruction, mainly because she could feel the angry waves coming off of her brother at the time.

"Don't be angry with him, Al," she said, " it's not his fault."

"Go home, Renata."

"I thought I was home."

James was seated at the kitchen table, Remus and Sirius sitting with him as they tried to settle him down. He had attempted to approach Renata to apologise but Aldemo wouldn't let him near her and when he had tried to go inside and apologise to Harry, all Harry did was scream and hide under his bed away from him. Molly was left with the task of coaxing him out while Augusta joined Arthur in the back to keep the other children occupied and distracted from what was taking place.

"I don't know what came over me," James whispered to his brothers, " really, I don't. But it was like I had Lily screaming inside my head, just like the nightmare I had last night. She kept telling me that I was replacing her with Ren and that Ren was replacing her as Harry's mother. That's all I could hear outside. I didn't mean what I said, I swear! I was just saying it to make it stop!"

Sirius and Remus exchanged worried glances, they thought that James had been making so much progress over the last several months, but it seemed he had just taken a hundred steps backwards.

The front door opened and Adelmo came inside, James looked over with a somewhat hopeful expression that Renata would be right behind him, but Adelmo came alone. He didn't even bother looking in the direction of the kitchen, just making his way towards Renata's bedroom, leaving James to panic as he pushed himself up from the table and followed him.

As he reached the doorway of Renata's room, he could see that Adelmo had his wand out and was collecting all of Renata's belongings.

"She's not leaving, is she?!" James asked, leaving the other man to turn around and face him with a glare.

"After the way you treated her? Of course, she is. I'm not letting her stay here, she's coming home with me," Adelmo told him. "You've put her through enough-"

"I didn't mean to! You don't understand, I didn't want to do that,"James approached him. "You have to believe me! It wasn't my intention to hurt her, I would never-"

"But you did! You did hurt her, enough that she thinks our mother was right about her...she thinks she's a failure, that she will never be fit enough to be seen as a mother! You made her feel like that!" Adelmo yelled at him, bringing Remus and Sirius to hurry into the room to prevent any sort of physical fight from breaking out. "You built her up and then you let her fall and fall hard. All she has ever done since the day she met you and Harry was care. Her feelings didn't matter because she wanted to help you and what did you do for her in return? You made her feel like she had something and then you ripped the rug from under her feet!"

"Al, that's enough," Sirius interjected, " James didn't mean to hurt Renata, and placing blame on anyone isn't the right thing to do!"

"I don't care about the right thing! Renata and I have always done the right thing and where did it ever get us? You just stay away from my sister, you leave her alone and let her heal from the pain you just put her through."

Adelmo looked away from Sirius before grabbing two little parcels from the bed and shoving them into James' hands.

"Here!" he growled. "Despite how you made her feel, Renata still wanted these to be delivered. She said that the boys wouldn't really understand them at this age, but she wanted you and Augusta to open them up. Do whatever you want though."

With Renata's things trailing behind him, Adelmo left the room, leaving James with the parcels in hand. Sirius left behind him, trying to get Adelmo to calm down and convince him that it really wasn't James' fault since the man was in a fragile state of mind. It seemed everyone neglected that while it was a happy occasion for the boys, the day held a bitter undertone for the people that weren't there to celebrate the birthdays.

Since Remus was the one left behind, he watched as James settled down at the edge of the bed before looking up at him.

"Do you mind calling Augusta in here for a moment?"

Remus had been silent throughout the matter, really at a loss for words when it came to what was appropriate to say at the time. However, he nodded his head at James' request and left the room. He didn't return as he went to see if he could help Molly get Harry out from under his bed, but Augusta did appear in the doorway. She didn't say anything to them, both of them guilty of making the same mistake of being too harsh with Renata for something that wasn't her fault.

James held out the parcel that had Neville's name written on it. "Renata wanted us to open these," he said quietly, as she took it from his hands. He didn't open his right away, allowing Augusta to open hers first, but the reaction of Augusta clapping her hand over her mouth and nearly looking teary-eyed left James curious as to what the parcels held.

He decided to open his and before he reached the item, he pulled out the letter inside first to read it over.

Dear Harry,

Happy Birthday! Today, you turned three years old and while you're too young to read this, I'm sure you'll be able to when you're older. I just wanted to write you this letter to tell you that you are by far the most amazing little boy I have ever met. You're so bright and wonderful, that I'm thankful for every day I get to spend with you. I'm so glad to witness you grow up with every passing day and I can't wait to experience more with you. If you're this fantastic at three, I can't imagine how amazing you'll be when you're old enough to read this letter on your own. I hope all of your birthday wishes come true, even the silliest or far-fetched ones and I really hope you enjoy the gift.

Love you dearly,

Nanata

Reaching into the box, James bit the inside of his cheek as he pulled out a chocolate frog case. He should have known that Renata was going to get them as a gift as she had claimed that she knew what to get Harry. He opened up the packaging, hoping that the sound of the chocolate frog would lure Harry out of his hiding spot, but that was only wishful thinking. However, as he opened it up, the frog hopped out, but James was only focused on the collector's card inside.

Limited Edition Gold

Fleamont Potter (1902-1979)

Famous for his brilliant potion-making and entrepreneurship, Fleamont Potter is most noted for his contribution of Sleekeazy's Hair Potion. While the company has long been sold, Sleekeazy's Hair Potion is still used to this day all around the world. Fleamont was a famed story-teller to his son, James Potter, an adoring husband to his wife, Euphemia, who loved dressing him up in exotic robes, and would have been a proud grandfather to Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived.

Staring back and James was a picture of his father, smiling and holding up the patent of Sleekeazy's in his hand with a proud smile on his face. Never in a million years would he expect such a gift and since she knew that Harry was an avid collector it would mean so much more to him when he was older and realised that it was his grandfather. Curious as to what Augusta's gift was, he pushed himself up as the woman had yet to move from the same spot where she had been standing.

She allowed him to look over and he saw that Neville would also be receiving a special edition gold Chocolate Frog card, but his would be of his parents. James could see the picture of Alice and Frank Longbottom on the card deemed heroes of the wizarding war on it.

"Did you tell her to do this?" Augusta asked him as she turned to him.

"No," he said, " she did this all on her own."

Making his way out of the room, James headed to Harry's room where Molly and Remus were still trying to get Harry out of hiding. They fell silent as he walked inside and sat on the floor, looking under the bed where Harry was lying on his side, holding one of his teddy bears close to his chest.

"Harry, I'm so sorry," James whispered to him, " Daddy is so sorry for yelling at you and I'm so sorry for yelling at Renata. I didn't mean to ruin your birthday again. But I'm-"

"No, Daddy!" Harry called out. "I want Mummy! I want Mummy!"

"I know, I know," James said as he began to cry, " but I sent her away and I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to!"

He didn't know what else to say besides sorry but it was like no one believed him when he said it.

Molly was about to head over to comfort James, but before she could, Remus held his arm out to prevent her from doing. She was going question why he was stopping her until she saw him point down to where Harry's arm was sticking out from under the bed and shortly thereafter, he came out completely and made his way to stand in front of his father. James made no sudden movement and waited for Harry to approach him and finally, Harry settled himself on his lap.

He wiped away the tears that had fallen from James' face just as Renata had done for him earlier.

"See?" Harry said. "No crying."
