Chapter Fifty-One

The world of glasses was a completely new world for Renata because no one in her family, not even the elderly had ever worn glasses that she could remember. However, according to James, due to the Potter family curse that consisted of messy hair and poor eyesight, it seemed it was going to lead to the inevitable for Harry. Of course, since she had noticed him squinting before, she couldn't help but notice every time he did it and she hoped that the eye doctor would be able to ease the strain on Harry's eyes.

Unfortunately, magic could not change the genetic disposition and any wand around the eyes was just asking for trouble. It was one of the few areas where muggles were superior in their practice and fortunately, the eye doctor they were about to visit was a muggle-born. An alumnus from Hogwarts that did not wish to pursue a magical career but rather provide a service that seemed unsolvable among the magic folk. After Sirius had dropped off Ron at the Burrow, he joined Renata and Harry as James would not be present for the first appointment.

Harry didn't have a sense that anything out of the ordinary was going to happen as he remained alert but quite happy to be in the company of Sirius and Renata.

"At least if he needs glasses, he'll be getting them earlier than later," Sirius said, " he'll be used to them before the time he starts school. Poor James didn't start having to wear his until fifth year and fought it like hell. It wasn't until Professor McGonagall told him that she was going to permanently transfigure them to his face that he wore them regularly."

"Why didn't he want to wear the glasses in the first place?" Renata asked in a confused tone. "I mean, they were designed to help his eyes."

"Because he thought they ruined his chances with Lily at the time," Sirius replied, feeling a little sense of awkwardness creeping up on them. I think Snivellus had something to do with that, claiming that James wouldn't be able to see his way out of a duel, so he was destined to be a failure."

As the two were sitting around in the waiting room waiting for the eye doctor to be available, Renata gave a shake of her head.

"So this Snivellus person, who was he exactly?"

"A raging arsehole," Sirius growled before Renata gave him a look for using such language in front of Harry. Although Harry wasn't paying any mind to what they were talking about as he was too busy flipping through a book that had been left on a table.

"Sorry," he added quickly, " but it was true. It's still true. It went back to before the term even started in the first year. We were all on the train and James made the claim that he wanted to be in Gryffindor, you know, like his father. Well, there goes Snape, rolling his eyes, as if James had said the worst thing on the face the Earth and then tells James that it's all fine if he wants to be in Gryffindor if he prefers brawns over brains."

"None of you even knew each other, why would they take to fighting so soon?"

"Let me tell you about Snivellus, no one was ever allowed to be around Lily, except for him. Anyone that came around was viewed as a threat to their "friendship" or whatever the hell you want to call it. He saw James as a threat from day one because well, it's James. Lily didn't dislike him on the train ride, she only grew to really dislike him the longer she spent in his company. I mean, don't get me wrong, James wasn't innocent and I wasn't either. But Lily used to make Snivellus out to be this sort of saint and it used to drive all of us mad."

"So, he wasn't a good person on top of being territorial over Lily?"

"Good person," Sirius snorted, " no, far from it. He was involved in the Dark Arts while we were back in school. Messing around with the crowd that ended up becoming Death Eaters, he eventually became one too, just like my younger brother, Regulus. Now why, if you cared so much about someone, would you hang around the people that think they are nothing to this world? Why would you support someone who wants to see them dead?"

Renata didn't have the answer, because it just didn't seem logical. " I don't know, but if Lily knew who he was hanging out with in school, correct? So why would she remain friends with him?"

"I asked myself that for a long time, Ren, but I don't know. Eventually, she came to her senses but that was only when Snivellus called her a mudblood in front of a group."

Her eyes widened as she gave a shake of her head, knowing how foul the term was. She could definitely see why the friendship ended rapidly after that.

"She still wouldn't give James the time of day for the longest time after though,"  Sirius continued, " drove him mad that she put him in the same category as Snivellus. Like I said, James had his problems back in school and I did too. I did worse things than him though. I'll save those stories for another day when I feel like doing a little self-loathing."

"But eventually, she came to see how good of a person he was and still is, right?" Renata asked, needing somewhat of a happy ending despite knowing what had become of Lily.

"Back in seventh year, she did," he said, "it was just after James, myself, Remus, and that filthy fucking-"

"Sirius!"

"The rat...sorry," Sirius said, shooting a glance over in Harry's direction. "I meant the rat. It was just after we had spoken to Dumbledore about joining the Order. She agreed to go on a date with him and the rest was history from that point on."

For a moment, the two were silent as Renata allowed herself to retain all the information. Sirius figured that she would be bothered by talking about Lily, but she didn't seem fazed at all. She only appeared rather curious about everything that had led up to the point where they all were now.

"May I ask what happened to this Snivellus fellow after everything happened?"

With a nod of his head, Sirius looked somewhat bitter and Renata thought she had asked the wrong question, but he still answered.

"He didn't end up in Azkaban like the rest of them, even though he should have. I don't know what possessed Dumbledore to hold a soft spot for him, but somehow, he managed to get out of it all. Even though he knew what was happening, he knew what was taking place, that's why he was there, holding Lily's body when James returned home that night. There's Harry, on the floor, screaming and crying with that mark on his forehead, pay no mind to that if you're Snivellus, just clutch the woman's body that you've been fighting against the whole duration of the war. Makes sense, doesn't it?"

"Do you think that's why James believes that Lily didn't love him in the way that he loved her? Because Snivellus returned for Lily?"

"They got together when we were all on the brink of war, their relationship was rushed, even if James didn't think so at the time. I think Lily loved him and I know James loved her, I just think we were all young and stuck in stressful times that made every little problem seem a million times bigger. The strain of a war is tough on any relationship, no matter how long you've been together, unfortunately, it was a very new relationship at the time. They got married right out of school, had Harry shortly after, it was all a lot."

"That's what I tried to explain to him before-"

"James isn't going to see it that though, no matter how you explain it to them. If I'm being honest, near the end before it all happened, they were fighting so much. I couldn't blame them though, locked up in hiding for so long, it was going to drive anyone mad. Every little thing was setting them off and that wasn't good for them, it wasn't good for Harry..."

"So, you don't think they would have last if Lily survived?"

"To be honest, no, I think they would have made the effort to try as hard as possible and I think they would have remained amazing friends while raising Harry. But sometimes, the saying is, that opposites attract, but that doesn't mean they are destined to last. I think that's why James carried the guilt for so long, knowing that they both weren't very happy near the end. Harry helped them tremendously, but they couldn't depend on him for everything, there was enough on his little shoulders."

As Dr Gregory Heiting came out to greet them, he welcomed them to his office and then made his way over to greet Harry. Harry peered up at him, a smile on his face as he held the book away from his face and up towards Dr Heiting. He explained to Renata and Sirius, as if they were Harry's parents, that they were going to screen him and see how he did before launching into the full exam, simply because Harry was still relatively young.

"He's only two?" Dr Heiting asked going over the paperwork that Renata had brought with her as instructed by James.

"Well, he'll be turning three in a week's time," Renata explained. "I know the general time for an exam would be three years old, but he's been holding objects very close to his face when playing with them or looking them over. And when he's outside, he squints an awful lot. I've noticed it before but it seems to become a bit more prominent as time goes on. I figured it might be for the best that he get checked sooner rather than later."

"There's no harm in it certainly, we just have to run tests differently for younger ones as they aren't capable of reading the charts. Is there any family history on your side with glasses or eye problems-"

"Er, no," Renata shook her head, "I'm not his mother, I'm just his nanny. And I'm not quite certain on his mother's side what the eye history is there. But his father's family history with eyesight problems is extremely prominent."

Another worker came from the back, offering her hand to Harry to take him to the back room to exam his eyes, leaving Harry to turn and look over his shoulder as he was led away.

"Bye, Paddy! Bye, Mummy!" Harry called, leaving Dr Heiting to give Renata a look since she had claimed not to have been the boy's mother.

Turning slightly red, Renata joined Sirius in waving goodbye to Harry before the door closed and the two adults were left in the room alone again. When she glanced over at Sirius, she could see the foolish grin on his face that made her groan.

"So? Would you like to tell me the events of what happened last night?" he asked, folding his arms over his chest.

"Well, Harry had a sleepover with Ron and Neville-"

"And you had your sleepover with Mr Potter," he said in a teasing tone, earning a look from her. However, as embarrassing as it was to have Sirius bring it up so casually in conversation, Renata did find herself wanting to talk about it. Maybe not fully in detail, but even as she woke up that morning in James' bed, she couldn't believe that it had actually happened.

"I know the first time is always awkward for people," Sirius told her, " trust me, I had to experience it twice."

With a bewildered expression, Renata's lips parted in confusion. "How did you experience the first time twice?"

"Well, once with a woman and once with a man."

"Oh."

"Yeah, believe me when I say, it's definitely a different experience between the two."

"I will take your word for it," she answered, " and to be honest with you, it might have started off awkward, but it didn't feel like that the entire time. It was actually really nice. I mean, I have nothing else to compare it to, so to me, it was perfectly fine."

"That means it can only get better," Sirius winked at her. "But good for you and you should be proud of yourself because obviously, your virginity wasn't prominent because if you didn't notice, James was glowing and smiling like a fool. So it seems the Abate skills in bed-"

"That's enough!" she covered her ears for a few seconds, not wanting to hear any more of the discussion, especially if her brother's skills in bed were going to be brought into it. "Anyways, there is something else I wanted to talk to you about."

"And that is?"

"I'm afraid I've made things awkward between Augusta and me," she said, looking down where her shoes were tapping against the floor. "Neville called me Mummy when I dropped him off earlier. "

"H-he did?"

"Yes and she did not look happy at all, she practically slammed the door in my face afterwards. I really don't want it to affect the friendship between Harry and Neville, it wouldn't be fair to them. And I could see where she would get upset, but it's not Neville's fault-"

"It's not your fault either, Renata-"

"But it might be," she argued, " I haven't been correcting Harry as much on it and I think Neville picked up on that. Maybe he just thinks that it's my name."

"Or maybe he just sees you as a mother figure," Sirius said, "just like Harry does. You don't have to give birth to them to be seen as a mother. I know all about that, I saw James' mother as my mother and I called her Mum over my own mother. Unfortunately, Harry and Neville don't have their mothers present in their lives, but they have you and you have done so much for them, even if you don't realise it."

"That's all very nice for them, but you didn't see Augusta's face, Sirius, and I can't imagine how James would react if he heard Harry..."

If Sirius was being honest, Renata looked absolutely terrified at the thought of being caught with Harry calling her "Mummy" in front of James and he didn't understand why.

"I really don't think it would be something that would be held against you," he attempted to reassure her, but she didn't look very convinced. "It's best not to stress yourself over it. I would see it as a form of flattery, really, especially with Harry. He was all kinds of picky when he was really little, no one could hold him or even look at him for the longest time unless it was on his terms. So, really, consider yourself a godsend because as soon as he met you, he latched on. Not to mention, James was definitely checking you out that day at the park-"

If there was one Renata learned was that Sirius Black was hardly ever serious. But his silliness often did manage to bring a smile to her face. They sat together for the time being, waiting for Harry's exam to be over with, while Sirius spoke about actually making dinner for Adelmo, as he asked Renata all sorts of question to figure out what to make. And eventually, Dr Heiting returned, with some good news and not so good news.

"Well, the bad news is, Harry is definite need of some glasses," he said, bringing over a chart for Renata to look over, " as he definitely has myopia or rather known as nearsightedness."

"That's what James has," Sirius interjected, " wow, it really is a curse. I think that's what his dad had too."

"So that means..." Renata looked to Dr Heiting to explain. "...what exactly?"

"It means that Harry has difficulty focusing on items that are further away," he said, "his corneas are too curved which doesn't let the light entering his eyes focus properly. Which is probably why he has to hold objects close to his face and that's why he's squinting when he's playing outside. It can be genetically passed down, so certainly if his father and grandfather had it, it's not really a surprise that he has it."

"And there isn't a way to fix it?" Renata questioned further, wondering if James was going to be upset if Harry ended up with the Potter's curse.

"Well, this is where the good news comes in, while we'll have to fit Harry for frames, the fact that it was caught very early on, may work in his favour. With corrected lenses, he may not have to wear them for his entire life. Now, if he waited longer and had to put more strain on his eyes, we would be looking at a different story."

"So, does he have to wear them all the time?"

"I would definitely advise that he wears them all the time in hopes of strengthening his eyes and hopefully correcting the problem. And of course, this will start with his yearly exams to make sure the glasses that he's wearing are proper for his sight and hopefully, down the line, we can come to the point where he may not need to wear them."

"Where do we go to get him the glasses?" Renata continued with her questions, leaving Sirius to smile next to her as for someone who feared the word "mummy" she was definitely taking on the motherly role.

"No need to go anywhere, unlike our muggle counterparts where it takes much longer for frame fittings and lenses, we can do all of that here within the same day. Harry's being fitted for his frames as we speak and should be finished here rather soon."

Of course, perfect timing allowed it that as soon as Dr Heiting finished speaking, the door opened and the witch from earlier walked out holding Harry's hand. Harry came out behind her, with a pair of round shaped frames fitted to his tiny face that immediately brought Renata to smile because he looked extremely adorable.

"Well, look at you," she said as Harry ran over to her and held onto her arms for dear life, " you look extremely handsome, just like your father. But with your own little flair, he has square while you sport the round frames."

Harry didn't seem to agree with her enthusiasm as he already attempted to take off his glasses. Before Renata could stop them, Harry managed to pull them off and throw them to the floor.

"No glasses!"

Next to Renata, Sirius started laughing. "Well, there's never been a doubt in my mind that he is James Potter's son but if there was, here is the proof that he takes after him in more ways than one. Maybe I'll have to call McGonagall and tell her to threaten him with transfiguring them to his face too."
