Chapter Eleven

Surrounded by such fragile souls that were carrying so many emotions left Renata feeling quite overwhelmed, on top of the stress of not knowing whether James was going to be alright. There was a great amount of concern for him, but a lot of her concern when into what was going to happen to Harry. If Remus and Sirius could barely get themselves together for an overnight call, what would happen if James didn't make his way home right away? Was she really expected to take over Harry's routine with minimal help from the others or was there someone else that perhaps James had in mind?

Did James have any more family?

Did Lily?

Part of her was afraid to ask as she didn't want to offend anybody or intrude into personal history that she had no business with. However, as Harry's nanny, she felt as though it was actually part of her business because she only wanted the best for the boy in case things became rather ugly.

Sirius was rather polite when it came to the discussion of why he and Remus weren't on speaking terms, but at the same time, Renata that she was very close to crossing a line, over to a side that maybe even he wasn't able to face as of just yet. She figured it was probably just in her best interest to focus all her attention on Harry for the time being and see how the situation would play itself out before she got herself worked up or in trouble over nothing.

But it was truly hard for Renata not to concern herself with the outside matters of the situation because she could feel every little bit of tension, fear, and worry as they all attempted to pull at her in different directions, begging for attention. She was surrounded by people that only deserved happiness in their lives but had been beaten down by grief on a daily basis with no hopes of escaping it. Many others would have probably walked away from the situation by that point, realising that it was too much to take on to be such a support system for so many.

However, it was something that Renata couldn't walk away from with a healthy conscious. Simply because after feeling their emotions, she knew if she left them in such pain, it was like walking away from a dying person and not even bothering to look over one's shoulder. Somehow, some way, Renata knew she needed to make things right for the people that had stumbled into her life in the most unexpected ways because if their grief and pain was hurting them, it was going to end up killing her in the long run.

Settled that night in the living room, Renata was resting on the sofa, with a sleeping Harry against her chest. She had been telling him the tale of Babbity Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump as requested when Harry brought over the book of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. She had never read any of the stories growing up, her fairytale bedtime stories being much different, but she enjoyed them nonetheless. She made silly voices for each character, made faces at Harry that he attempted to make back at her, and overall, tried to tell a story that he heard a million times before in a way he had never heard it.

Harry loved it and even Sirius seemed to enjoy it too as they had settled in front of Renata as she read it. But eventually, Harry had finally succumbed to the exhaustion of the day and made his way right over to her. He climbed up her legs and placed his head right on her chest, grabbing a mixture of her shirt and some of her hair in one of his fists to hold onto as he drifted off. Renata remained still, not taking the chance of waking him as she knew that Harry needed plenty of sleep.

Sirius was settled on the floor, looking over the book that he claimed to have had a copy of back when he was Harry's age, although no one had ever bothered to read it to him.

"Is there any more?" Renata asked him quietly, bringing him to look over, " Family, I mean. Is there any other family that Harry has, just in case? If James wasn't able to and if something were to happen to you or Remus, would there be someone there for Harry? Any other family members?"

"Not on James' side," Sirius informed her, " it was just him and his parents as far as I knew. No mention of cousins or anything like that. Even if there was I don't think he ever met them and since his parents passed away a few years back, they wouldn't be able to, obviously. But Lily had family, a sister, her husband, and a nephew."

"So would Harry go there if anything were to happen?"

"Over James' dead body," Sirius replied, " he would never allow it. Lily and her sister had a falling out back when we were all still at Hogwarts, got worse as they got older. Lily was a muggle-born, you know? The rest of her family were muggles, her parents were accepting, but not her sister, Petunia. A nasty cow that woman is. James and that poor excuse of a man Vernon Dursley ended up going at it, fighting each other constantly. The Dursleys had nothing good to say about magic folk, it would be terrible for Harry to go there. They would hate him, they would treat him like he was nothing..."

Renata didn't need to hear anymore, already Sirius' answer had left her nervous with any sort of idea of what could happen to Harry in such situations.

"Nervous, are you?" Sirius asked her. "You don't think I could handle it-"

"No, that's not what I meant by it," Renata told him quickly. "I only asked as a sort of "what if" scenario. The war is over, there's no need to worry about things in that sense, but there are always possibilities. I was just curious if there was a sort of backup plan put in place, just in case. I have no doubt that you would take care of Harry to the best of your abilities, but if something were to ever happen to you, would Remus really refuse to take Harry?"

"It would be incredibly complicated if he chose to do that. Maybe if Harry was much older it wouldn't be, but not right now, not when Harry is this young. Looking after him on his own wouldn't work."

She really wanted to know the reason why, but still, she didn't bring herself to ask. He was avoiding the topic itself for a reason and she knew she had to respect that, no matter how hard her curiosity was pinching at her to ask.

"Would you take him?" Sirius suddenly questioned her in return, bringing her to glance over at him as she snapped out of her little daze.

"I bet your pardon?"

Sirius sat up, setting the book in his hands aside as he looked directly at her. "If it came down to it, hypothetically, if no one stepped forward to take Harry and he had nowhere else to go, would you take him in?"

"Of course," Renata answered right away, " is that even a question?"

"Well, I don't know too many people willing to take on a child especially from someone they don't know-"

"People do it every day, " she said, " it's called adoption."

He smiled and let out a small chuckle while nodding his head as she had gotten him there. " Touché, " he began, " but that's not what I meant. I'm just wondering why you would be so willing to take Harry on when you barely know any of us?"

"I don't need to know anyone to know that Harry is a child. He's not even three years old right now, and even inside that tiny body of his, he holds such a vast amount of innocence that the world waits to corrupt in so many ways. I wouldn't want him to lose all that, he's been through enough."

"So it has nothing to do with the fact that he's the Boy-Who-Lived?"

Sirius wasn't looking to pick a fight with her, even if his questions were slightly coming across as an interrogation. But he was just curious about Renata as a person. She seemed nice enough, but plenty of people always seemed nice, especially when it came to Harry. It was an unfortunate situation that had brought him fame, but nonetheless, Harry Potter was a household name among the immediate wizarding world in the U.K. and perhaps farther across the world.

Just as James held his reservations with people, so did Sirius because he didn't want people to just enter their lives for the sake of being associated with fame. The war had left far too much damage behind for them to be concerned with such things at the time. They didn't want people getting involved for the wrong reasons. So, while he had the chance, Sirius felt it was his duty, at least as an active godfather to ask the nanny all the questions he could.

"He wasn't always the Boy-Who-Lived, was he? No, he wasn't and if it weren't for the scar on his forehead, no one would think twice to see him differently than any other child his age. It doesn't matter what title he carries, he carried the title of a child first. I hope the world remembers that as he grows older. But I fear they won't, I feel like they'll glamourise this tragedy, without really being aware of everything that was lost."

The two fell silent as soon as Harry shifted in his sleep, turning his head to the other side and letting out a little sound before he became still again.

"Well, you don't have to worry about that sort of stuff," Sirius whispered to her after a few moments, " about what's going to happen to Harry because James is going to come back. He's just had a moment, but he'll be back, he's strong."

"This isn't a matter of holding strength," she told him, " at least, not in my eyes. It's a matter of losing so much at one time and no one allowing him to properly grieve. He lost his wife and friends, but he cannot mourn because he feels like he has to be strong for Harry, that he has to be strong for you and Remus during this time and be strong for everyone else. He hasn't had those moments where he can let it out because he has to be strong. That's what he's convinced himself and that's what's causing the problem. He's been strong for too long."

She stared down at Harry before closing her own eyes and resting her head against the back cushion of the sofa.

"It's not a matter of strength, it's a matter of letting it go."

The conversation ended on an abrupt note, with Renata eventually falling asleep with Harry on the sofa, leaving Sirius to just sit there with the Babbitty Rabbitty book in hand. He hadn't given it so much thought that James was trying to be strong for him and Remus while they were going through their own troubles, but he could understand it at that point once she brought it up.

Unfortunately, Sirius wasn't looking to be the one to say sorry to Remus first, after all, Remus had been the one to accuse initially and for that, Sirius was still feeling extremely hurt. After everything they had been through from the time of their childhood up until adulthood, Remus knew damn well that Sirius was not like his family. He had been there when Sirius ran away from home and went to leave with James and his parents, Euphemia and Fleamont. He knew of the sacrifices he made and yet, Remus, at the time, saw him as no better than Bellatrix and Regulus.

One of his own brothers saw him as nothing but a traitor.

Of course, the irony of it all was they were both looking at the wrong brother.

And while Renata didn't know the full situation, she didn't need to know much to come to the conclusion that James was hurting and he needed help. Sure, Sirius and Remus both knew that but they had allowed their differences to keep playing a heavy role in the life after the war. However, now they were truly able to see how damaging it truly was. Rather than being there for James when he really needed them both to be there for his son, they were letting their own pettiness get in the way. They couldn't keep going on like that, it wasn't good for anyone, not James, and certainly not Harry in the long run.

Placing the book back down, Sirius pushed himself up to his feet and looked over in the direction of Renata and Harry it was safe to say that they would probably remain asleep for the rest of the night. That would give him enough time to venture out and take care of business as he needed to without them being aware that he was gone.

Carefully, he made his way to the front door, made his way outside and slowly closed it behind it so that it didn't make a sound. From the outside, he locked it with the use of his wand and within seconds, a black dog took down the pavement, a mission in mind of where he had to go and what he had to do.

His guide was the full moon that lit up the road.

As predicted by Sirius, Renata and Harry slept through the entire night, neither one of them actually moving until the next morning. It was the sound of the front door opening that caused the woman to stir abruptly and sit up. She wasn't sure if she was still partially in a dream of sorts, but nonetheless, she was still confused as she witnessed Sirius enter the flat with Remus in tow. Neither one of them were saying anything to each other, not even looking at each other, but it was just the fact of seeing them together that was enough to bring a sleepy smile to her expression.

Harry stirred from his own sleep from Renata's movement and when he saw both of his uncles in the doorway, he was suddenly wide awake and ready for the day.

"Moony!" he greeted with a wave of his hand. "Paddy!"

Remus definitely looked as though he had been through hell and back, but as soon as Harry called to both of them in greeting, both men were smiling in return.  Unusual nicknames for his uncles as Renata would put it, but it was definitely adorable because, in those few stolen moments, they all looked rather happy.

It was short-lived though as all the adults knew what the next course of action was going to be, they needed to know what was going on with James. The discussion began of who should go to St Mungo's and that seemed to lead to a bit of an argument between Sirius and Remus as neither one of them could actually agree.

"We'll all go!" Renata stated in a firm tone, bringing their argument to an end. "I think it would be best if we all go. Even if James isn't coming home today, I think he would benefit from seeing you two and if he is up to it, he can see Harry. And while we're at it, I can speak with my brother while we're there. So why don't you two work on getting Harry a bath and getting him dressed while I get ready myself and then we can go."

Neither one of them looked as though they were going to fight her as Sirius quickly lifted Harry into his arms before he exchanged a look with Remus.

They had never given Harry a bath before.

And as Renata said that she would be back before leaving to her place, all she could see was the look of horror on their faces as Harry grinned at them.

Renata knew it was best not to leave the crew alone for long as she raced home, took the fastest shower of her life, ended up throwing several dog treats at Enzo in passing, and returned with her hair still quite damp, leaving her to fumble with her wand to fix her to at least look a bit presentable.

When she returned, Harry was squeaky clean while Remus and Sirius were mumbling under their breath while using their own wands to dry their clothing.

"Did you two decide to take a bath as well?" she asked in a teasing tone in passing, while she helped Harry place his shoes on.

"No," Remus answered, " Harry decided that for us."

Once everyone was dry, dressed, and actually presentable to enter St Mungo's without looking as if they were the ones in need of help, they departed using the Floo Network, arriving promptly within the hospital fifteen minutes after nine in the morning. Renata looked around for her brother, but it was very likely that Adelmo was busy at the time, leaving her to wait. Sirius and Remus didn't look too fond of the idea, but they both agreed that they would venture together to see James and see how he was doing.

Standing outside of the Janus Thickey Ward with Harry, Renata was holding him up and allowing him to look out the window where he was pointing out all the birds. Each time he pointed one out, Renata would whistle which made Harry giggle. He tried but it just resulted in his spitting all over the glass of the window.

To add to the entertainment if it was a bigger bird that flew past, Renata would let out a squawking sound, which Harry found even more amusing. And it seemed someone else wanted to join in on the fun as they both heard someone else imitating her squawking sounds moments later.

Both of them turned to see a little blonde haired boy pulling back on the hand of an older woman as he was looking over his shoulder directly at them. They seemed to be on their way to enter the ward themselves, but he was definitely more interested in what Harry and Renata were doing at the window.

After nearly stumbling over his own feet, the woman holding his hand hoisted him up and turned to him with a stern expression.

"Neville, behave yourself!"
