Chapter Eight

When Renata returned home later than expected, Adelmo could see the distraught look on her face, which left him to question if something had gone. He truly hoped that it didn't involve Renata losing her job only after having it for a day, especially when she had seemed so excited by the idea initially. He welcomed her inside the kitchen where he had been cooking for himself at the time and poured her a cup of tea after getting her to sit down. He was afraid to ask if anything bad had happened but at the same time, he was concerned for his little sister, hoping that it wasn't anything too bad.

"Renata, what's wrong?" he questioned her as he sat across from her, watching as she gripped the small teacup in hand. "Did something happen today?"

Eventually, Renata peered up at him and let out a small sigh. " He is such a broken man, Al," Renata said, " it breaks my heart to see any person suffer in such a way. You should have seen him today, I know he doesn't want me around but he's doing it for the sake of his son. Or at least, that's what I thought and then I went to leave and he was begging me to stay. He was willing to just pay me more money as long as I agreed to stay."

She grabbed a spoon and stirred in some sugar to her tea but still didn't bring herself to drink it, instead, she just watched as the liquid swirled about slightly.

"I don't think this is just the job of a nanny anymore," she told him, " that family needs so much more."

"Are you quitting then?" Adelmo asked, not entirely blaming her if the answer was "yes." He was sure that when she agreed to the job that she wasn't looking to carry the emotional baggage that James Potter came with.

"No, of course not," Renata shook her head quickly, " that would be the worst thing I could do right now. The man couldn't even cook himself a proper meal, even with the use of magic, it's a wonder that he and Harry aren't all skin and bones right now. You should have tasted this sauce that Mr Potter was trying to force Harry to eat, it was dreadful. I had no other option but to take them to the markets and then I made them spaghetti tonight."

"That's not stereotypical it at all," Adelmo chuckled with a slight roll of his eyes in amusement."Pasta, really?"

"I know, I know, but they ate and that's the most important thing. They were fed when I left them and Harry actually seemed to enjoy the meal."

There was a little hint of pride to her tone that she had gotten Harry to eat something. The little one was not the most dainty eater by far as half of his plate ended up all over his face and clothes, but he did slurp down the noodles and sauce and that was enough for her to feel rather accomplished.

"Well," Adelmo said as he placed his hand over her wrist gently, " just practise caution with this situation, Ren. I know you want to help them, I know you like helping people, but you're going to be taking on a lot. I don't want to see you stress yourself out and I certainly don't want to see you get hurt. Just be careful, that's all I ask."

She nodded her head in agreement and while she appreciated the gesture of the tea, she didn't really find herself wanting to drink it. She passed it along to her brother before excusing herself from the table and announcing that she was going to take a shower and then head to bed. She was to report back to the Potter household early the next morning since Harry was reported to be an early riser.

As she made her way into the shower after undressing, she allowed the hot water to continuously pour over her body as she just stood there. Renata didn't want to admit it to her brother, but there was a sense of fear already brewing in her chest with her new job. She didn't want to screw anything up in the fear that it would cause any further damage towards James and Harry. James was in such a fragile state as she came to witness before she left the home and she was afraid that if she wasn't enough to help him, that she would just make things worse.

The problem was, she was left to question herself, left to wonder if she was good enough for the job? She had personally never dealt with grief, she had never lost anyone that truly meant something to her. The closest she had ever come to experiencing a death was when her pet fish Renaldo had died one night when she was around six years old.

There was nothing that she could relate to when it came to James not only losing his wife but losing friends as well to a war that he was so young to take part in but really didn't have any other choice unless he wanted to lose his son as well. She couldn't imagine being faced with such a challenge, to face such loss, and then be asked to carry on as usual.

The fact that James had asked for help, Renata saw that as a form of strength as James saw it more as a moment of weakness. But she saw it as strength, simply because there were many people in the world who could not bring themselves to ask for help, whether it was because they were consumed by fear or pride, they simply would rather let their problems consume them whole, rather than reach out.

"Please," she prayed in the shower as she leaned against the cold wall and allowed the water to continue washing over her, " if the gods do exist, please don't let me mess this up."

After getting a good night's rest that lacked in dreaming, Renata found herself refresh the next morning and ready to start the day. She wasn't sure what was really planned with her day spent in the company of James and Harry, but she was certain she was going to figure it out once she arrived. Adelmo was already gone on one of his shifts as the house was quiet as Renata got ready.

Enzo watched her carefully from the bottom of the stairs, his head following her whenever she walked past. She felt slightly guilty that he was going to be left alone for the majority of the day, but she hoped that Adelmo would take advantage of his breaks and come home to let the pup out to stretch his legs.

"I wish I could take you," she called to him in passing, " but we might have to warm up to that idea. After all, you made quite a fool out of yourself the last time you met everyone."

Enzo whined before placing his head down and covering his face with the use of his paws. She let out a small chuckle before she grabbed her shoes and went to head down the stairs to leave. He let out a small whine as he followed her towards the door, leaving her to feel slightly guilty.

"Alright, I suppose I can leave you with a treat," she said hurrying to the kitchen and grabbing a bone for him. She placed it down and while he was distracted, she quickly let the home and pulled out her wand to apparate to the Potter home.

She arrived in no time and proceeded to knock as she had done the day before, only to find the door open almost immediately as if they had been anticipating her arrival. As soon as the door opened, she was greeted with the ear-piercing scream that belonged to Harry, who was wailing in the background. James looked to be at his wit's end, his eyes heavy with the dark bags under them and red with irritation.

"Rough start to the morning?" she asked as she allowed herself in, passing James as she entered.

"He doesn't want to put any clothes on," James called over Harry's crying, " he gets like this some mornings. And it would have been fine if we were staying home all day, but Molly invited him over to the Burrow for a playdate with her son, Ron. You know, the boy we met yesterday? I'm not going to bring him over naked!"

"What's Harry's full name, by chance?" Renata questioned as she led the way down the hall as the screaming grew louder. James gave her an odd look behind her back but shook off his own questions to give her the answer.

"Harry James Potter."

"Good, thank you," she smiled at him over her shoulder before they came upon the kitchen where Harry was throwing his tantrum. " HARRY JAMES POTTER!"

She didn't necessarily yell the boy's name, but she said it with such a firmness that even James felt as though he was in trouble because she had said his name at the time as well. Immediately, both Potters were silent and watching to see what her next approach would be. James found himself standing a little taller as he watched Renata walk over towards Harry, who was currently sitting up after he had been rolling on the floor during his tantrum.

"Stand up, Harry," she said, her tone was softer, but the stern gaze on her face brought Harry to push himself up to his feet.

He stood before her only wearing a cloth nappy that made him look wildly adorable if Renata was being honest but his behaviour was unacceptable for the time being.

"Now, that's enough of that crying," she told him, " you have a nice day ahead of you. It's time to get dress."

Turning to look over her shoulder, Renata held her hand out to James to give her the clothing that he had been carrying around after he had been forced to chase Harry around to get the clothes on him. James cautiously made his way over and placed the clothing in her hand, giving his son a look that said that Harry was on is own with this one.

She grabbed the trousers and shirt that had been selected for Harry and started to fix the shirt to place over his head. Harry opened his mouth, ready to start screaming in protest again, but as soon as he met Renata's gaze again, he fell silent. But it didn't erase the pure pout on his face as he stood there and allowed himself to get dressed.

James walked over and knelt down beside his saviour at the time. "How did you do that?"

If James didn't feel like a total failure before, he was certainly feeling like one at that moment as he couldn't even handle the simple task of placing clothes on his son. He didn't like it when Harry screamed like a banshee, so he normally always gave in and backed away until he could come to a compromise with Harry.

"You have to keep a firm voice with him, Mr Potter," Renata told him, " it's a bit of tough love, but you can't allow him to walk all over you and make all of his demands. He's just a little one now but if you let him continue on with this behaviour, the older he gets, the harder it's going to be to break such behaviour. You don't have to be afraid to be stern, it's guidance for him."

He didn't look very comfortable with the idea of being firm, that wasn't very much in his nature. He always liked to think of himself as very laidback, he had always been the laidback one when it came between his parenting style and Lily's parenting style. Lily liked to claim that he was soft when it came to Harry, but at the same time, she had been no better at some points. They both liked to give in to Harry's request, they loved spoiling him, but now James was getting to witness what the spoiling nature had done so far.

He had zero control over his son.

"My parents were quite strict growing up," Renata continued, " they were firm when they needed to be, wore stern expressions when my brother and I didn't act the way we were supposed to. And yet, I understood completely why they did it, even if I didn't like it all the time. It's alright, he's not going to grow up to hate you simply because you put your foot down."

She handed him the trousers after placing the shirt on over Harry's head, allowing James to take over and assert himself. The grown man appeared hesitant, but he took the trousers and knelt down in front of Harry. Immediately, there was a shift as Harry started to cry and attempted to leave, but Renata blocked him before looking at James and giving him an encouraging nod. It took him a few seconds to work himself up to do it, but after taking a deep breath, he was ready.

"Harry, that's enough!"

Suddenly, Harry looked at his father as if James had lost his mind, but the crying stopped and he allowed James to put on the trousers and finished getting him ready. Harry just stood there afterwards looking back and forth between the two adults that had teamed up against him.

"That was really good, Mr Potter," Renata patted James' shoulder lightly. "All you have to do is keep it up. Consistency is key."

Renata had to admit, she was excited for Harry to have a playdate and at the mention of Ron, Harry seemed to remember his little friend from the day before and looked relatively excited for himself. James explained that they would be travelling to the Burrow, which was located in Ottery St Catchpole, as no one would expect Molly to travel and bring all of her children with her. Besides, there wouldn't nearly be enough room for all of them to run around comfortably.

She didn't have a problem with it as she was just ready to watch Harry be reunited with his companion.

But nothing could ever prepare her to witness just how glorious the Burrow was in person.

The home to the Weasley family was unlike anything that Renata had ever witnessed before, and seeing as Harry shared the same expression on his face when they arrived through the Floo Network in the place, she could safely say that felt the same. The inside held a warm atmosphere, albeit a bit cluttered with all sorts of things lying around. She was curious about all the muggle equipment she came to witness, wondering if Molly or her husband was a muggle-born?

There wasn't an answer given right away as they were greeted right away by Molly, who already had her hands full with the boys and her daughter, Ginny going wild. Harry seemed to enjoy all the noise but he spotted Ron and made his move to approach them.

Seconds later, two of the older boys who were chasing after each other ran into the kitchen, only to be followed by the sound of a crashing noise. Molly immediately made a face before looking up to apologise.

"Why don't we take them outside to play?" Renata suggested. "I'm sure they would all like to get some fresh air. The weather is holding out nicely too."

Watching the children race outside to play, reminded Renata of the afternoons she spent playing outside with her own brother. It brought a smile to her face as she pictured herself running freely again in the fields near her house, chasing after Adelmo when they had little to worry about. Adelmo had never been a fast runner, awkward in his gaint, but Renata never used it against him as she would often force herself to run slower to give her older brother the lead. She didn't know why she did it at the time, it just felt like the right thing to do.

She could see that Ron's older brothers somewhat did the same, allowing the younger ones to catch up to them and careful to not leave them behind as they raced around. Ron and Harry didn't have interest in the older boys as Harry was more interested in chasing the chickens around that clucked in irritation as their peaceful morning had been ruined.

Ron and Harry teamed up, holding each other's hands as they ran forward after one chicken, both of them laughing so hard until they were red in the face.

"It's amazing how fast little ones can become friends, isn't it?" Renata asked, looking over to where Molly and James were watching the children play. "They're less picky, haven't been tainted by the world's judgement of telling them who they should play with. They just feel free to spend time with anyone who they consider to be fun. It's sweet."

James smiled, ready to agree, as was Molly but all the adults were silenced as Harry's and Ron's laughter quickly turned into screaming. It seemed the chickens had stood no match to their chasing, but the rooster of the Weasley family was a completely different story. They stood with wide eyes as they watch Ron and Harry run past screaming as the rooster chased them with the flock of chickens following his lead.
