Rage

The prison cell was cold.

Water dripped from the prison's ceilings. In one of the prison cells, Pascual was walking back and forth as he scrunched his hair. "¡Maldito seas, Federico! (Damn you, Federico!)." His voice echoed in the prison. He wasn't alone in prison; his men were in separate prison cells. Sitting quietly while hearing their boss talking to himself.

They looked uncertain since they, too, were imprisoned.

"¡Soldados! ¡Saquenme de aquí! ¡Me han tendido una trampa! ¡Miente! ¡Federico mintió! (Soldiers! Get me out of here! I have been framed! He lies! Federico lied!)" No one answered, and Pascual felt trapped and used.

As they continued walking back and forth, everyone in the prison heard echoes outside. Theyheard talking but didn't know who it was. The prison's door was opened, and to everyone's surprise, Esteban entered. He wasn't alone; Guillermo and Victoriano followed suit.

Pascual gulped and stopped on his tracks. The three men entered as they closed the door behind them.

Victoriano slowly walked toward Pascual's prison cell. Pascual tried hard not to look nervous, but his body betrayed him by trembling.

"Estoy seguro de que sabes por qué estamos aquí, Pascual (I am certain you know why we are here, Pascual)."

"N-No sé de qué estás hablando (I-I don't know what you are talking about)."

Victoriano quickly glanced at Esteban, who walked forward, motioning a key to the prison cell, opening it, and walking inside. Esteban then ran to Pascual, forcing him onto the wall as he kicked him in the stomach.

The kick made Pascual lose breath momentarily. Before he could say something, Esteban kicked him again. "No estamos aquí para perder el tiempo. Ya sabes por qué estamos aquí. ¿Dónde está Valentina? (We're not here to waste time. You know why we are here. Where is Valentina?)"

"¡N-No sé! (I-I don't know!)."

Victoriano entered the cell; Esteban moved out of the way. His eyes hadn't blinked; they were filled with killing intent. "Mientes. Tú eres quién siempre intentaba llegar a ella. Encontraron la ropa de mi hija con sangre. (You're lying. You're the one who always tried to get to her. My daughter's clothes were found with blood)."

Pascual violently trembled; his lips quivered. "¡N-no tuve nada que ver con V-Valentina! (I had nothing to do with Valentina!)."

Victoriano knew that Pascual was lying. Pascual wasn't going to speak, but he knew who would. Getting out of the prison cell, he went to Pascual's men, who stood. They also said that they knew nothing about Valentina's whereabouts. "¿Te das cuenta de que, como trabajas con Pascual, todos seréis declarados culpables? (You do realize that, since you work with Pascual, you and all of you will be found guilty?)."

The men nervously looked at one another. "¿De qué estás hablando? (What are you talking about?" one of the men asked.

"Los soldados están en el rancho de tu jefe y, si encuentran el dinero, todos serán culpables. Como trabajan para él, los obispos asumirán que todos sabían lo que hizo Pascual. Lo que significa que todos serán igualmente culpables. ¿Sabes qué les pasa a quienes roban en la Misión? Muerte. (The soldiers are at your boss's ranch, and if they find the money, then you all will be guilty. Since you work for him, the Bishops will assume that you all knew what Pascual did. Meaning you all will be just as guilty. Do you know what happens to those who steal from the Mission? Death.)"

The men became terrified. One of them knelt and held onto the prison cell bars. "¡Somos inocentes! ¡Lo juramos! Oí a Pascual llegar al rancho anoche tarde. ¡Lo oí hablar consigo mismo de que por fin tenía a Valentina para él solo! ¡Eso es todo lo que sé! (We are innocent! We swear it! I heard Pascual arriving at the ranch late last night. I heard him speak to himself of finally having Valentina to himself! This is all I know!)."

Pascual's eyes widened. He couldn't believe he had been heard last night. He yelled profanities.

Guillermo's eyes widened when he heard Pascual having Valentina to himself, but she wasn't found at the ranch. Then, there was only one possibility. He saw red. Guillermo ran inside Pascual's prison cell, pushed Esteban out of the way, and got on top of Pascual. "Tlacacemele! (Monster)! ¡La violaste! ¡La violaste! (You raped her! You raped her!)" Guillermo punched Pascual across the face repeatedly.

He was lost in his rage!

Nothing mattered.

Morality didn't matter.

Consequences didn't matter,

Anger.

Despair.

Hurt.

Guillermo finally accepted that everything he had been taught was a lie.

Valentina was right all along.

God never cared about their people and their suffering. God sat back as the Padres and Spaniards killed and took everything from the Tongva, who just wanted to live in peace. "VALENTINA WAS RIGHT! YOU ALL ARE MONSTERS! MONSTERS! MURDERERS! RAPISTS! YOU HAVE USED GOD TO JUSTIFY YOUR ACTIONS AGAINST MY PEOPLE! YOU ALL HAVE BEEN EVIL! YOUR GOD HAS ALWAYS BEEN EVIL!"

Esteban immediately stood and grabbed Guillermo. "Guillermo, stop! If you kill him then you will also be put to death!" He tried to get Guillermo away from Esteban, but his anger was too great. "If you kill him, then you will be imprisoned! You might not see Valentina again! Guillermo, please, listen to reason! Pascual will face the consequences!"

"GUILLERMO." Victoriano's voice was stern and strong, making everyone still. Guillermo stopped as he looked at his father, who still faced Pascual's men. "Do not kill him."

"What!? He-"

"I know. I know. I know..." Victoriano's voice trembled. Esteban and Guillermo noticed tears dripping to the floor.

He was crying.

Victoriano cried when he realized what happened to his daughter. What was done to her. It hit him like a ton of bricks. Hearing that his daughter was hurt and violated beyond repair broke his soul.

It broke any faith he had in god.

Valentina was right.

God was truly evil.

He brought his children into such a terrible world—a world where his own people used god to do their deeds. Victoriano was blind to see it, not his daughter. Valentina saw the truth he didn't want to see, and didn't want Guillermo and Mitena to see it either.

It was too late.

Victoriano's ignorance failed his daughter.

God failed his daughter.

The men noticed and pleaded with him to tell the Bishops that Federico and Pascual framed them. Federico took the money from the treasury and gave it to Pascual, who didn't give them anything in return. They pleaded for their lives.

The pleading was disregarded.

Nothing mattered but Valentina.

Suddenly, the doors opened. A couple of Soldados entered. Esteban and Guillermo walked out of the prison cell, leaving an injured and slightly conscious Pascual. The Soldados noticed Pascual's condition but paid it no mind.

Esteban walked forward and asked, "¿Se encontró el dinero? (Was the money found?)."

"Sí. Estamos aquí porque encontramos la bolsa con dinero de la Misión. Además, encontraron un cadáver cerca del rancho. (Yes. We are here because we found the bag of money that belongs to the Mission. Also, a body was found close to the ranch)."

The mention of a body drew everyone's attention to the Soldado. Victoriano walked forward, fearing that it was his daughter. "¿¡De quién es el cuerpo!? (Whose body!?)"

"No tengo obligación de decírselo. Ya no es obispo. Debe irse o tomaremos medidas extremas (I am under no obligation to tell you. You are no longer Bishop. You must leave, or we will use extreme measures)."

Esteban told Guillermo to leave, then went to Victoriano and told him the same thing. Father and son were about to argue, but with one look of reassurance, they did as they were instructed.

Outside, Victoriano ran to the outskirts of the building, where he threw up. The disgust, the fear, the failure, the disillusionment built up.

Guillermo watched as his father threw up. There was nothing he could say. They found out the truth about what happened to Valentina. The only question was whether Valentina was dead or alive. Guillermo knew that no matter what the answer was, his sister was already dead.

Victoriano slowly stood up as he tried to regulate his breathing, and he noticed Esteban walking out of the prison.

Guillermo walked forward. "What happened!? Who did they find!? Was it Valentina!?" He tried to compose himself, but it was difficult because all he could think about was his sister.

Victoriano joined them and awaited the news. "Tell us."

"It was not Valentina they found, but another body. One of the soldados recognized the body belonging to Padre Lucas."

"What?" Guillermo felt absolute relief and shock. "Padre Lucas?"

"Yes, he went missing. Federico was questioned since he was the last one to see him. He stated that Padre Lucas ran away. I have a feeling that Federico had something to do with this. Since his plan didn't go accordingly and Pascual wanted more, he needed someone to blame."

"So Federico framed him for the murder of Padre Lucas and the theft of the money. So what now?" Guillermo asked.

Victoriano was tired of everything. His daughter wasn't dead but it didn't mean her soul wasn't. He didn't care about Federico or anything in the Mission. It only caused pain. "Pascual will be put to death, and Federico will be sent to another Mission. There is no point. We need to leave this place. If Valentina is nowhere to be found, then there is one place she may be."

"Where?" Esteban asked.

"Home."
