Chapter 6- the first shift

It was the day of my birthday, and after the excitement of being woken up to presents shoved in my face, and my family proceeding to film my reaction to each one, only for me to grimace at my morning face at have them deleted, I needed out.

I was with Jason at the woods, as we decided to go for a walk through an abandoned path. We were talking about random things such as what I plan to do for my birthday party, and what was my favourite gift I was given; simple sentence starters. The sound of silence becoming refreshing when we paused to find another thing to discuss.

Our friendship was one of those special friendships where you don't have awkward silence. If anything, we just end up laughing at the other persons attempt to start a conversation. But I'm not complaining. I really enjoyed our jokes.

Every now and then, I would trip over a stray rock or twig, or unnecessary slippy leaf, and have Jason help pick me up. But it eventually became more painful. My legs began to ache, and not just because of my lack of exercise. It had got to the point where I had to take breaks, sweat forming a layer on my face, and my heart rate speeding up.

Then I herd a loud crack followed by an immense pain in my leg. The constant sound of bones breaking and a painful hollow knocking sound that I soon found out to be the joints moving in my body. It took hours as I lay on the floor as my body began to change. I felt weak, confused and scared. My eyes where screwed shut, the nice light of the sun, turning into a painful glare that sent a pain right through to the back of my eyes.

When I finally became conscious enough to register my surroundings, I saw crouched figure in front of me dabbing my face with what looked like part of my t-shirt, wet with water. I remember looking at him in awe, turning my head around as I saw for the fist time through her eyes. It was beautiful.

I looked at the trees, furthest away from me and saw each patch of colour, the texture of the veins that ran up from the base of each leaf and the way each individual one blew a different way from the next in the wind.

The rough deep brown and black bark, that littered the trees body along with a noise like a gentle song, followed by the shift in the earth beneath me. The hum of bees and the tuneless melody of the birds chattering above me.

The thud of the ground to my right followed by a small rustle of the bush, the leaves brushing up against each other as a small face popped out of them. The greenery covering the rest of his body like a warm blanket. The wire whiskers twitching, following the movement of his nose, left to right, as he smelled. Then it retracting back to its burrow, it's small rabbit tail like the bobble of a woolly hat.

Everything was enhanced. The earthy smell of the dirt, the sound of nature; it was all so surreal.

I remember turning back to the person, to find out it was Jason. A wave of relief coated my body as I looked up at him, however even he looked different. His brown hair, dark with gel, the small scar in his left eyebrow, slightly raised and paler than the rest of his face. The small camouflaged freckles that layered his cheeks, visible now; each one, a different colour.

It was phenomenal.

I lifted my head up, they weight feeling heavier than usual, as I tried to get up. I rolled over to my front and put my hands down to in front of my face as a leverage to stand. Muttering a few curse words as I pushed through the piercing ache and the throbbing headache.

"Woah, steady, steady." I heard Jason say, his voice sounding amplified. I begun to stand quicker as he held my shoulders to lift me up.

A loud voice, like nails on a chalkboard cut through the silence. Gravely and low pitched, but a girls voice. Pain shoots through my head as I heard a murmur of undetectable words, chained together in a string of incoherent chatter.

I begun to look for the girl speaking to me, my vision still blurry but now spinning, as my feet turned me around. I made my way towards a tall brunette, my hand resting on her shoulders as I look into her eyes, not a girl but Jason. I shuddered, tripping over small stray twigs and stumble again, and again.

Once I finally begun to balance myself, the sweet noise of birds I was before admiring, soon became a loud pain. A cacophony of tuneless vibrations.

I clutched at the sides of my head, the numb tips of my fingers digging into the sides of my temples. My breathing, heavy and fast. My feet carried my unconscious body around as it begins to grow darker. The pain in my head gone, along with the feeling of being overwhelmed.

All at once, I stopped feeling. My vision went completely blank and my breathing stopped. All that I could hear was that voice, becoming clearer and something stepping from out of the darkness. Brown with white tips at the top of its ears, along with a small necklace around her neck, with a gem. Her snout moving in time to the words, every so often her sharp teeth would show.

I backed away, my hands I front of my face as protection to shield myself from the thing in front of me, it's tail, swishing lightly from side to side.

"Neomea." I hear the deep brown wolf in front of me say. "I am you."

Tears begun to prick at my eyes as I felt one roll down my check, only for something to wipe it away. "Neomea, I'm here for you!" I hear Jason say.

I open my eyes and I'm back on the sofa in Jason's arms, the credits of Pacific Rim littered the TV. He scoops me up and I can feel the sweat running down my face and how cold he was to the touch. I had a bad dream again.

He lifts me slowly and begins walking up the stairs. The swaying movements of him moving reminded me of an old fashioned child's cot and it felt oddly nice. It was a smooth rhythm lulling me back to sleep. I snuggled my head into the pillow that was now below my head and fell slowly back into the curse and the blessing that is the world of dreams.
