Chapter 4- work
"Next customer please." I shout as my last one walks off with their food. The same process of taking an order, collecting money and placing food on a tray beginning to bore me.
Noticing my lack of enthusiasm, I watched as my boss came up behind me. "Well someone looks happy." He says sarcastically, his gravely northern voice, illiterate to mine.
"Overjoyed." I reply, in the same tone, typing in the mans order.
"How long have you been on the tills?" He asks me, sweeping a large hand through his fine, thin hair down to his short stubble.
"3 hours." I mutter disapprovingly.
"Well," he sighs in acceptance "it's one, so you can have your lunch break now, but I want you finished quickly so you can go on the drive thru."
"Ok." I say putting the things on the tray, for the man to take, logging off my counter and walking away.
Although working at a fast food place can be hard, I like the free food. My boss is the only person at this work that I trust. He lets me have free lunches and breakfasts after seeing me skip lunch. I suppose the food that I get isn't 3 Michelin star worthy like Central in Lima, Peru, but I'm not in a situation to be picky, and at least it's warm.
I grab the same as usual; a Diet Coke, large fries and 9 fish fingers as I am working a late shift tonight, because I'm not going home for a while, and begin to walk over to the table at the back of the room.
As I eat, I begin to hear shouting, followed by a bang. Probably another costumer who got their panties in a twist when going through the drive through.
I keep eating, not wishing to be involved with selfish hooligans who think that the small mistakes that we make, because we do make mistakes, is more important than the wellbeing of our staff.
I continue to eat my food, wondering what was going on, until Jane, one of the older employees here, comes into the room where I am sitting, shaking.
I rush over to her, and guide her down to the chair next to me, worried about the state she's in. I always considered Jane as the motherly figure of the team, especially to me as I lost that a while ago, so when something happens to her, I want to be there to comfort her.
I wait for her movements to gradually come to a stop, the only remanence of her worried state as heavy breathing.
"Jane?" I ask, my voice quiet as not to startle her, any response at all. Surprising me, she speaks up.
"His eyes." She says, her voice blank, absent of any emotion.
Understanding that she was not in the right state of mind to respond well, I just stick with an "It's ok now. We've got you." Hoping it's the reassurance she needs to feel safe.
My curiosity would have to wait.
I stand up from the table, deciding to give her some privacy. I look over to my food only to feel a bit sick, and deciding to throw away the rest. The current actions of the woman wringing her hands together, making me loose my appetite.
I begin to walk over to the drive through, remembering that my boss wanted me to go on it after my lunch.
'Lupin?'
'Yello?'
'Can you hear anything?' I ask her.
Although she may be annoying sometimes, we both look out for ourselves, and doesn't want us to be in danger, because that would have an effect on her as well.
'I think that whatever it was, is gone now.' She says concerned.
I mutter a thanks as she I walk over to the chair and grabbing the headset and securing it on my head, switching it on at the side along with the monitor.
I take in a deep breath and rest my head on my left hand out of boredom, ready to start my job again.
"Neomea?"
I jump up from my seat, my joints seizing up, as I slowly try to turn my rigid body around to my fellow colleague.
"Hi David." I strain, plastering a smile on my face.
"Uh, hi. I was just wondering if you were ok?" He says, settling down the miniature sized fire extinguisher on the floor next to him. His recent way of holding it in front of him, like a gun, beginning to tire him.
I try to hold in my chuckle as I hear the clank of the metal hitting the floor. "I'm fine. But why the extinguisher?"
"Oh!" He says blushing, trying to kick it behind him nervously. "I heard a noise."
Realising what he was talking about, I begin to laugh. "Oh, that? That was like 10 minutes ago. It wasn't even me on the drive through."
Realising how stupid he looked he just smiled. "Anyway, at least your ok."
"I am, but I would recommend checking on Jane. She's a bit shaken up." I say, reminiscing the her words.
"Sure!! I will do that right away." He says walking out the door.
"Don't forget your fire extinguisher!" I shout out after him.
He rushes in to pick it up. "Yeah, sorry." He says before rushing back out again.
I turn back to the machine and switching on the speaker, lifting up the barriers to let the cars load in.
"Hello Seefood drive through, how can I take your order?" I say, resuming my position of wresting my head on my left hand, whilst I type in the following order from what sounded like the family from Cheaper By The Dozen.
"Ok. Could you come to the next window please to pay." I say.
My mind wonders back to what Jane said, along with the fear in her eyes. "His eyes."
"His eyes..."
