AFaG Pt 3
Me last chapter: Yeah so updates will be more frequent- (proceeds to not update for like a year). Sorry about that fam, I've been working on personal projects and just been losing Ducktales obsession steam in general! Updates will now be on Friday though and I'm leaving it up to you guys to keep me accountable!! I know a lot of y'all probably lost interest in this story while waiting and I know some people have even left Wattpad since the last time I updated this. Wattpad just doesn't have the same razzle dazzle that it used to, ya know? Anyways, I'll update y'all on my life after the new chapter, so let's get on with the show!
Louie, not unlike Daisy and Owlson, shrunk under Bradford's gaze. The old vulture stood in the entry of the kitchen, tapping his foot and waiting for an explanation on the ruckus. Dewey avoided eye contact with either Louie or Bradford.
"What was all the noise in here? Where's Miss Daisy?" Bradford crossed his arms, an eyebrow raised.
Dewey spoke up before Louie could explain everything. "Louie just knocked over the radio." Which Louie supposed wasn't a lie. "And Daisy said she didn't like us and went home." That was. The blue triplet finished it off with an unconvincing grin.
Louie wondered whether keeping up the lie was more stressful than just going on an adventure and getting it over with.
Bradford glanced between the two, unsure. Finally, he sighed. "Well, I guess I don't have to do game night anymore. Whatever the dumb situation you two got yourselves into, please fix it quickly. And don't make too much of a mess. I expect both of you to clean this kitchen in the morning." Shaking his head, he marched off.
Louie and Dewey exchanged a look. They rushed to the counter and set the microphone on top of the counter. "What are we going to do, Dewey?"
"Nothing." With a nod, Dewey turned to leave.
Louie trailed after him, grabbing the microphone. "You're really committed to this no adventure bit, aren't you? What if Owlson or Daisy get hurt! Sure, Owlson so crazy, she might just survive anything, but do you really think Daisy can manage herself?" Louie matched his brother's pace, walking at his side.
"She managed Uncle Donald, didn't she?" Dewey shook his head, probably trying to rid himself of any doubts he himself was having. "Look, Louie, you don't have to be the hero all the time. Enjoy a break!" They neared the game room where the rest of the family was still playing games.
"This doesn't feel like a break!" Louie whisper shouted, on the verge of pulling his feathers out.
The boys took their spot on the couch as Gladdy and Fethry were taking their turn. They were playing some sort of block stacking game, Gladdy pushing the block out of its slot while Fethry waited for it on the other side.
Huey and Webby, sitting on the other side of the couch, shared a laugh. "Please, there's no way Gladdy is going to move that block without knocking it over immediately," Huey said.
Fethry ignored the boy's comment. "Alright Gladdy, knock over the block. Try to push the block out hard and fast so that the rest of the blocks fall! You're going too slow! Go Gladdy! Go! Go! Go! Come on, you call that knocking over the tower? Just push the block over already!"
The little block fell into Fethry's hand gently. He set it on top of the tower without it falling.
"What?" Huey and Webby stared in astonishment.
Fethry grinned, resting his arm on Gladdy's shoulder. "And that, little children, is how you cheat Murphy's law."
"Oohhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Gladdy cheered. The cousins high fived before going to sit back down again.
Huey and Webby exchanged a look.
"We may be sleeping on the roof tonight." Webby frowned.
"Nah, that was just a joke about the losers sleeping on the roof. Right, Cousin Feths?" Huey searched Fethry's face for an answer, only getting a laugh. "I don't think it was a joke."
With uncertainty, the two ducklings walked up to play. As Webby pushed a block from one side, Huey waited to catch it. From his spot on the couch, Louie couldn't help but notice two blocks moving instead of one.
"Webbs, you're pushing two blocks."
"What? No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are! Webby, you're gonna make it fall!"
"I'm not pushing it!"
"Fethry, is this more of your witchcraft! If two go, it'll fall!"
Louie felt a ringing in his pocket. The caller ID read Owlson. Well, that wasn't good. Scooting closer to his brother so Dewey could hear, he answered the phone.
"What's up, L-Dawg??" Louie quickly lowered the volume on her sharp voice to dissuade attention.
"You called me?"
"Oh right." Owlson blew a raspberry. "Well, I just wanted to let ya know that, um... Yeah you know that uprising I mentioned earlier? Well, after they tied your cousin's new secretary and me up, I heard their first attack was going to be on something called the tower of infinity? Idk if that means anything to you, I just thought that might be useful information."
Louie gasped, his gaze shooting up to the block tower. "Owlson, it's game night!" He kept his shout in harsh whisper form.
"What?"
"It doesn't matter. Just convince them to stop, because the tower's about to fall! I'll shrink myself down and-"
"No, you won't-" Dewey wrestled the microphone from Louie's hands. The two started going back and forth, but the clattering of blocks interrupted them.
"Webby! Your girl cooties made the tower fall!"
"Excuse me?" Webby and Huey started bickering, but Louie and Dewey were focused on the pile of bricks strewn about the table.
"No!" The two ducklings shouted in unison. They shuffled through the bricks, searching for any sign of the social media influencer.
Webby and Huey had stopped bickering, and the remaining four family members stared in confusion.
"I'll never take a break from adventure again!" Louie cried.
"I'll never not listen to Louie again!" Dewey cried.
Fethry cleared his throat. "Uh boys? You good?"
Some shuffling came from the other end of the phone, and Louie realized it had never hung up. "Uh guys?" came Owlson. "We weren't on the tower. Dude, we're their prisoners, why would they take us on their mission?"
Louie's eyes widened. Pressing the phone to his ear, he grinned and his eyes watered a little. "Oh my gosh! You're not dead!"
"What are you talking about?" Fethry raised an eyebrow.
"Oh well-" Dewey cut in. "It's just been a while since we've talked to Owlson! Just checking whether or not she's dead or something."
"We literally saw her last week," Huey said.
Silence passed over the room. Neither Dewey or Louie could think of any sort of lie, and if they could, they wouldn't execute it well.
"Well, anyways." Fethry clapped his hands together. "Next game! I'm think I've got some board games in the dining room. Let's go!" Fethry disappeared with the rest of the family.
Louie put the phone on speaker now that everyone else had left. Dewey abandoned the microphone on the couch to listen in.
"Not gonna lie, the tiny dudes are pretty mad about that tower situation," Owlson said. "They think it's sus, that it was a trap, so they've declared full on war on you and your family. I don't know how much damage these guys could do, but like, I don't think it's beyond them to set your house on fire. Just saying, fam."
Dewey took the phone. He passed ideas back and forth with the owl on the other end, but Louie was distracted with his own thoughts. He could stop the microscopic army. He could save his family from their wrath, and none of them would ever know that the Duck family had almost been attached because Louie had been too scared of a little adventure. He eyed the microphone which Dewey had conveniently left unattended. The green triplet slipped away in the midst of the conversation.
...
Louie fiddled with the microphone in the foyer. "Aw, come on, this thing went off at the slightest breeze but now I can't even get the dang thing to shoot me!" With a frustrated huff, he leaned against the wall.
"Louie!" Dewey ran to meet his brother. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Saving Owlson, our family... I guess Daisy too." Louie continue messing with the switches unsuccessfully.
"Louie, you don't need to do that. Try unshrinking them."
"That'd be great if I knew which button that was!" Louie kept his focus on the device. His frustration increased.
Dewey stepped forward. "Louie, are you good?"
"I'm fine, what are you talking about?" Louie hadn't meant for his tone to be so sharp.
Dewey tried to take the device from Louie. "Are you sure? You've been acting weird all night! This isn't just adventure fatigue, it's something else."
Louie fought for the microphone. "I'm telling you, I'm fine!"
"What's wrong!"
"Nothing is wrong!"
"Well, clearly! Why else would you be yelling at me!"
"Because I'm not enough, ok!"
Dewey stopped trying to wrestle the microphone out of Louie's hands. "What are you talking about, Lou?"
With a sigh, Louie let his arms sag. "I'm not... enough. Look, our mom was supposed to be the one person in the world to have our backs. She was supposed to protect us, but she's gone. I'm just a kid. How am I supposed to protect you and Huey if you guys get into trouble? What if..." Louie shoved his hands in his pockets. "What if I can't?"
Dewey stared at his brother, a frown on his face. A moment later, a chuckle escaped him. "Louie, you have been a better mom to Huey and I than Della Duck could've ever been. There's no one I rather have looking after me. Sure, I was kind of mad at you for keeping secrets about mom, but I could never stay mad at you for long, because I know no matter what you do, you always have my best interests at heart. You are enough." Dewey held out his hand for a fist bump. "Got it?"
Louie's gaze moved to Dewey's fist, and he returned the motion. "Got it." Louie let the microphone drop, letting a laser go off. "Oh, now it works."
One of the tiny people grew to a visible size, but he kept growing until he was a giant standing over the ducklings. The once Pygmy growled, his shadow stretching across the room.
Dewey shrunk behind his brother, his voice folding into a squeaky whisper. "Louie?"
"Well, I think we found the grow ray." Louie couldn't take his eyes off the giant. "Dewey, we should probably go get the others." Dewey said nothing, only nodding. The two took off in a run, Louie scooping up the microphone.
The giant chased after them, smacking into the wall at a turn. Dewey screamed the whole way, Louie taking the lead. They slid into the dining room. Tossing the device to Dewey, Louie made to lock the door.
Fethry and the rest of the family sat around the table, playing some board game. "What are you two doing?"
Dewey finally cracked. "Owlson came over and gave us a shrink ray, but then Louie accidentally shrank her, and it turns out there are these tiny people we've been stepping on, and we just accidentallymadeonereallybigandnowitstryingtokilluscousinfethryyouhavetosaveus!" He let out a sob to catch his breath at the end.
"What?" Fethry watched in astonishment.
The giant smashed through the door, scooping up Louie. The duckling struggled in the giant's grip, the rest of the family shouting. With a roar, the giant went after Dewey, but he managed to dodge.
"Shrink him, Dewey!" Louie tried to wriggle his way out of the giant's hand.
Dewey toggled the settings on the microphone, but the giant slapped it from his hands before he could shrink him. With a yelp, the blue triplet tried to catch the device. It tumbled on the table, blasting Huey, Webby, Gladdy, and Fethry. Landing on the table, they shrunk down to the size of Daisy and Owlson.
"Gah! I shrunk them!" Dewey's knees buckled. "Louie, help!"
"Kind of stuck at the moment." With a grunt, Louie tried once again to free himself from the giant's hand. In response, the giant waved him around like a pepper shaker, the little duck's brain jumbling around in his head.
"No, no, no, what do I do?" Dewey reached for the microphone on the table before realizing he almost crushed a tiny Huey.
Shaking himself of his dizziness, Louie spotted the microphone being carried off, presumably by the tiny army. They called flies to carry it up and off. They shot off the laser, trying to get Louie and Dewey on their level.
"Dewey! Under the table!" Louie called. The blue clad lad did as told, hiding under the table from the blasts.
"Louie! I need your help!" A blast shot inches from Dewey's hand, getting a yelp out of him.
Louie hit the hand of the giant, earning him a deep growl. The giant looked him over, deciding what he should do with the boy. "Dewey!" Scrunching his face, Louie thought it over. "Dewey, you don't need my help!"
"What!"
"You can do it, Dewey! I know I'm overprotective to you and Huey, but it's only because I'm scared you don't need me anymore. And the truth is you don't, but that's okay!"
Dewey pulled himself farther under the table. "Are you crazy! Have you met me? I can't fight giants and tiny people by myself!"
Louie nodded. "Yes, you can! You're Dewey Duck! You've fought ghosts, escaped Ithaquack, and solved the mystery of what happened to Della Duck! And you know what else?"
"What?"
"You stopped a giant and an army of tiny people!"
"No, I haven- oh!" Dewey's expression clicked. "Alright, Louie. If you think I can, then I'm gonna Dewey it!"
"Wooh!" Louie cheered.
Dewey ran from underneath the table, ducking away from a microphone blast. Jumping on one of the chairs, he made his move to the table. The board game has been abandoned in the ruckus. Kneeling, he searched for the rest of the family, as not to crush them. Taking one of the game pieces, he scooped them up into it so they'd be out of the way. "Alright guys, I'm gonna fix this!" With the board, he threw it as a frisbee.
The cardboard square smacked into the giant's hand. With a shout, he released Louie. The boy nearly landed on the ground, but he caught himself on the giant's finger. "Nice going, Dew! Get the microphone!" The green triplet was stopped, the giant almost clapping him. He moved out the way, climbing up the giant's arm.
Jumping up, Dewey wrestled the microphone from the flies. He landed back on the ground, maneuvering to shrink the giant. With the giant's shoulder no longer upholding him, Louie was in free fall. Dewey rushed to save him, catching him wedding style.
"Ha! Dewey, you did it!"
A grin grew across Dewey's face. "I did, didn't I! Oh, wait." Setting Louie back on solid ground, Dewey turned to unshrink everyone else. They landed awkwardly on the table. Daisy and Owlson had been tied to a long stick, Owlson upside down.
"Wow! My followers ain't gonna believe this one!" Owlson laughed.
Daisy groaned, rolling her eyes. "I am not getting paid enough for this."
...
Opening Fethry's office door, Louie cleared his throat. "So... I take it your mad?" Morning had brought with it the consequences for last night's shenanigans.
"Close the door," Fethry said, his chair turned away.
Louie did as told, his imagination coming up with possible punishments. It didn't help that a lot of it was based on how Uncle Donald would've punished him.
A laugh broke from Fethry as he turned his seat around. Louie stiffened, wondering what that reaction could mean for him. "You and Dewey must've been committed to keep all that shrinking stuff a secret for so long. And here I was thinking you two were terrible at lying."
"I don't follow, Fethry."
Fethry rolled his eyes with a chuckle. "Look, if you were tired of adventuring or needed a break, you could've just asked."
"Oh." A small laugh escaped Louie. "Would you have said yes?"
"For sure, I hated adventuring at your age." Fethry rolled his hand on his wrist. "Do you have any ideas how many times I begged Uncle Scrooge for a break? I almost died so many times. And it's not like he was ever concerned for our safety either, so it was arguably more dangerous than what we do."
"So I'm not in trouble?"
"No, you are." Fethry looked off, thinking. "I'd say... no more adventuring for a week. At least."
"Wait what?" Louie listed his head.
Rising from his chair, Fethry moved to ruffle Louie's hair. "Dewey told me about what you said. You gotta work on taking care of yourself kid. Your brothers will be just fine without you." He made his way towards the door, folding his arms behind his head. "I'm gonna grab some cereal. You want some?"
Louie caught up with him. "But- But what if they need me?"
"Well, when they need you- Like really need you, you'll be there for them."
