TRLoPAP Pt 4

Donald doubled back from Fethry's punch. He shook himself and wiped his beak, glaring at his cousin. "Wow, someone's mad."

Fethry clenched his fists. "Mitzy just got eaten by a shark thing, and you're making jokes. All you ever do is cause trouble." The bear that was there let out a roar. Fethry sighed. "Natalie's right, we shouldn't be fighting. We have to save Mitz."

Donald raised an eyebrow. "Are you talking to a stupid bear?" That earned a growler from the bear. Donald took a few steps back, raising his hands defensively. "Alright alright. I don't know why you're so mad, you pretty much hated her." With a roll of his eyes, he crossed his arms.

"I didn't hate her, what are you talking about!" It had been a long time since Donald had seen Fethry this angry.

"Well, you guys were yelling, for one. Like, a lot. That's the only way I found you. So, if you think about it..." Donald waved his hands as he spoke. "It's kind of your fault that the shark ate her."

Fethry just groaned and moved towards the bank of the lagoon. "Alright, let's see about going after her." Donald decided he had nothing better to do, so he might as well join his cousin. The bear followed behind them, and Donald wondered why the thing didn't just eat them. The bear dipped in the water and made a noise at them. It waved its head and Fethry watched it warily. "On your back...?"

Fethry climbed on the bear's back and they waded into the technicolor liquid. Fethry gave Donald an expectant look. "I'm not riding that be-"

"Donald, get on the bear!"

Donald flinched and did as he was told. He rode behind Fethry and they swam out into the middle of the lagoon. A moment of awkward silence passed between them. When Donald noticed they were floating around idly, he asked, "So what exactly is the plan here?"

"I don't know, just figure out a way to rescue Mitzy from that shark." Fethry shrugged, his eyes focused on the water.

Donald leaned his head on his palm and huffed. Donald... He nearly jumped at the sound of his name. Looking around suspiciously for the source of the whisper, he tried not to draw Fethry's attention. Behind you... His eyes widened as he spotted his shadow, where the eyes should be glowing red. After watching it a bit more, he realized the shadow wasn't even his own. The shape was more like the girl he had been working for. The shadow held a finger to where her mouth would've been.

Donald squinted at it, mouthing What?

It's me, Lena. I'm part shadow.

This was all too weird for Donald. He had specifically wanted none of this magic and adventure stuff. Not with Scrooge, not with Della, and not now. But he should've probably just learnt to accept it by this point. What are you doing? he worded.

Just seeing how everything's going with Tiffany. How big is she now?  The shadow rubbed her hands together.

Donald's eyes widened at the concept of the shark growing any bigger.

A loud splash drew Donald's attention toward, and the shark burst from the water. Fethry yelped, nearly falling off the bear. They heard a scream, presumably Mitzy's. The shark hit the water and dove back under the surface.

Fethry shook any water from his hand and hunched closer to the bear.

"What if I pushed you in?" Donald smirked. "You could save your lady friend, I can go, and we'll both be happy."

"Donald!" Fethry snapped.

"Just kidding, sheesh." Donald crossed his arms, frowning. After Fethry's 13th birthday, Donald hadn't teased him about his fear of water. It was too fresh then, too real. But as the years had past, it didn't particularly hurt his conscience anymore.

"What is your problem Donald? Why are you such a jerk?" Feathry stole a glance back at his older cousin. Donald could almost read sadness in his eyes, but he shook the thought away. He didn't need his pity. "I mean, wouldn't it be easier if I just kept the boys? You clearly don't want them for any good reason. Then we could both be out of each other's life."

Donald flinched at the question. He looked away. "Because I made a promise. And they're all I have left of her."

Donald turned back to Fethry. He could see the confusion on his face before he realized who her was: Della.

"I..." Fethry almost seemed compassionate towards him, but he visibly pushed any of those feelings away. "Then you should've treated them better."

"No, she should've..." Donald found himself lost in his thoughts.

Are you done with the sentimental junk?

Rolling his eyes at his shadow, Donald ran a hand through his hair and grumbled. "Whatever, that's in the past and all the talking in the world couldn't fix it. Let's just hurry up with Tiffany." The shadow nodded.

Fethry stared at Donald a moment before a laugh escaped him. "Tiffany?"

"The stupid shark or whatever!" Donald threw his hands up in frustration. Movement came from the water. "Look, there."

Following his gaze, Fethry smiled. "Alright, Tiffany, you're going down!" The bear growled in agreement. Donald face palmed at the use of the name.

"You've got a bear, and a shark is basically a fish, so why not just the bear eat it?" Donald asked.

"One, sharks are mammals, and two, no, Mitzy's in there." Fethry shot a look back at Donald. "There were so many things wrong with that plan."

"Well, you got a better idea? How in the world are you supposed to save her without getting eaten?"

"This wouldn't even be a problem if you hadn't shown up!" Glaring at Donald, Fethry was turned away from the water.

Noticing the fin of the shark approaching them,   Donald's eyes widened. "It's coming!"

Before Fethry could react, the shark was beneath them. Rainbow teeth dipped out of the water and surrounded them. Donald and Fethry jumped of the bear before it could eat them.

The water was surprisingly warm as it hit Donald in the face. He swam up to the surface and waded, taking in the surroundings. He couldn't see the bear, probably eaten by the shark. He heard a loud splash near him as Fethry was sinking into the water.

Adrenaline was rushing through Donald, making it hard for him to think. Lena snapped him back to reality.

He's drowning! Aren't you gonna save him?

Donald nodded and dove towards his younger cousin. They broke the surface and Donald carried him to shore. Fethry coughed up water, dripping wet. He flopped on his back, trying to catch his breath. Donald sat there awkwardly, wondering what to do next.

"So, is almost drowning your thing now or?"

Fethry tried to smack him, but it was weak from using all his strength to not die. With one last cough, he seemed to had gotten all of the water out of his system. When he could speak, he said, "Shut up."

"Your welcome for saving your life."

"It's common curtesy not to let someone die!"Donald helped Fethry to his feet. "Alright, that shark has already eaten Mitzy and Natalie, and it's gonna eat you next, 'cause there's no way I'm getting eaten next, so unless you want to live the rest of your life in a magical shark, you will help me stop that thing!"

Donald put his hands up defensively. "Okay, okay, chill." Putting his knuckle to his chin, he thought over everything he knew about the shark. It wasn't much with what little information Lena had told him. "Okay, maybe if it finishes what it was set out to do, it'll disappear."

"What does that mean?"

"Well, I think it's after your penny, but you don't have it on you so..." Donald shrugged turning up empty.

"What if we tricked it into thinking it had the penny? Would that work?"

"Maybe." Donald stepped towards the edge of the water. "But I don't have anything small, circular, or copper colored." Suddenly, the shark's head popped out of the water and snapped at him. He jumped back, narrowly avoiding its jaws.

"Get farther on the land. Then it can't reach us." The two stepped back on the quartz floor.

But to their surprise, the shark crawled out of the water, legs forming on its underside. They gasped, eyes widened.

"Well, that's inconvenient."

"Yeah, you think!"

The shark charged them. Donald jumped to the side, followed by his cousin. The shark shook with a roar, rainbow water splashing from it. Donald tried to dodge the shark's grabs, but tripped. Fethry joined his side.

He squinted his eyes shut and Tiffany swallowed them.

Donald and Fethry landed on where the tongue would be. Fethry stiffened. "Why is it so wet in here?"

"Was wondering when you guys would show up." They looked down to see Mitzy and the bear sitting on a ledge in the shark's throat.

Fethry grinned. "Mitzy! You're alive!"

"Yeah, we've just been playing go fish with random junk in my backpack," she said nonchalantly. She dug through her bag, then scratched the bear behind the ear.

"Forget stupid Go Fish! We have to get out of here!" Donald held onto the wall of its mouth with one hand, and the other he threw outward dramatically.

"Hey, you watch your tone about Go Fish!" She sent a look at Donald before turning back to the bear. "It's fun for the whole family."

Donald facepalmed.

"Got any... candy?" The bear growled in response to Mitzy and shoved a small caramel candy her way.

A lightbulb went off in Donald's head. "Hey! Does that candy sorta look like a penny?"

She picked it up and examined it. "Sorta, yeah. My brother put it in here. Why?"

"Donald, that's the best idea you've had! Mitzy pass it up!" Fethry stretched downward as far as he could to get it from her.

"Gee thanks," Donald said with a deadpan expression.

Candy in hand, Fethry shuffled as close to Donald as he could. "Hey, you think you could give me a boost?"

A strange sensation came over Donald. It was fuzzy at first, but after a moment he felt normal again. But something was still... off.

Donald pulled away from his cousin.

"Donald?"

"You know what, no." Donald clenched his fists and anger took over him. "Quit trying to act like we're friends again because we're not! Five years ago you betrayed my trust, and nothing will fix that. You can rot in this shark for all I care, you sentimental moron."

Fethry eyes widened and he took a step back. "Donald..." He looked like he wanted to say more, but he didn't. Instead, he started trying out of the shark himself. "Fine. Wish me luck Mitz!"

"You go, you beautiful idiot!" Mitzy gave him a thumbs up before turning back to her game.

...

Fethry jumped from Tiffany's mouth and did a barrel roll to catch himself. He got to his feet, still a little shook from Donald's words. They had seemed to be on semi-good terms just a moment ago. He waved the thoughts away and focused back on the shark.

"Hey Tiff!" Drawing its attention, it let out a roar. He waved the candy in the air. "Look who's got the penny that you want for whatever reason?"

The shark's eyes fixed on him and it started stomping towards him. His heart rate quickened at how fast it moved, almost creepy.

"You want it? Go ahead!" He chucked the penny as hard as he could and the shark swallowed it with a gulped.

It stopped, probably thinking of what to do next. Fethry prepared himself to run in case it didn't work. Nonetheless, the shark started to glow red and transformed back into the gem. Fethry cheered in relief. Donald, Mitzy, and Natalie fell from the air.

Fethry caught Mitzy in his arms. He smirked at her and she just rolled her eyes.

"Oh, Fethry, you're my hero." She dramatically put a hand to her forehead, flittering her eyelashes.

"My pleasure, madam," he said, mustering up his most heroic voice. She chuckled as he set her down.

"Well, Don, looks your idea worked." He turned to face his cousin, but he was nowhere to be seen. Fethry frowned. "I guess he left."

Mitzy playfully nudged him in the shoulder. "Eh, we don't need that grumpy guss anywho." She smiled awkwardly. "Now let's collect some of this water and we can be on our way!" She grabbed a water bottle from her beg and knelt down to fill it up. And together they left.

...

Donald stomped out of the caves, hands shoved in his pockets. Something weird had happened to him back there, and he was determined to find out. He had to get out of there before Fethry started asking questions.

His shadow shifted on the ground and split away from him. It was replaced with his normal one, and Lena's shifted back into her normal look. He flinched at her suddenness.

She smiled. "Neat trick, huh? I'm still kind of figuring it out, but I've been practicing shifted from shadow to flesh. My aunt even says someday I might be able to split the two and be two people at once! How cool is that!"

"What the heck happened back there!" Donald didn't bother to listen to her or look at her.

She frowned, walking along side him. "Well, um, that was me. I haven't had any training with my magic yet, so it's still a little wonky. I was just trying to help you remember our goal on this mission, but I guess instead I help you remember some trauma and stuff. Sorry." She looked down like a guilty puppy.

Donald was silent, mulling it over. He hated the thought of someone using magic on him, and even more unpredictable magic.

"But, I don't think it turned out too bad. I mean, you didn't say anything you didn't mean, right?"

Donald side glanced at her, taken back by the question. "Yes. I mean, no. I mean-" He stopped and sighed. "I don't know alright!" His eyes fixed a glare on her. "Don't ever use magic on me again, understood?"

She nodded.

"And I quit."

Lena stopped walking at those words. "What?"

"I don't want anything to do with this. Get your cent on your own." He tried to take another step, but his feet wouldn't listen. They were covered in a pink aura. Magic.

"No, you're not."

Donald flinched at how harsh her tone was. "I just said no more magic."

Her harsh tone faded with a sigh. She moved to stand in front of him. "Listen, I would totally let you quit. Except Miss De Spell won't like it. And if you think my magic, which is untrained, is bad, you won't like her. So no more magic starting now if you don't quit. Otherwise I can't make any promises." She stared him directly in the eyes, leaving him with no option but to nod. "Good." She lifted her hand and the magic disappeared.

She walked on ahead of him, and he hesitated before following. What had he gotten himself into?

...

Fethry stepped into the foyer, tired from adventure. And he didn't even wanna know why the couch was by the entrance set up as a pillow fort.

"Hey Feths, how was your trip?" Gladdy asked, walking in the room wearing the same bathrobe he had been wearing earlier.

Fethry raised an eyebrow. "Are you wearing my bathrobe?"

Gladdy chuckled nervously. "What, this old thing? Pfft, nah, I, uh... found it..." Fethry stared at him. "In your closet."

"Yeah, that's what I thought."

Fethry made his way up the stairs and was met by Bradford. The vulture cleared his throat. "So..."

"We are on talking terms, if that's what you want to know." A soft smile crept on Fethry's face. "Thanks."

"Well, that's good. And in case it didn't go well, Mrs. McDuck gave me Miss Krilbert's number." Bradford held out a thin card to the duck.

Fethry took it giddily. "Really! I got her number? Yes! And I didn't even have to ask." He looked over the card and frowned. "Hang on a sec, is this a prank?"

"Why do you say that?"

"It says 867-5309."

"Like the song?"

"Like the song." Fethry deflated. "Why am I not surprised?" Their conversation was interrupted by the ringing of his phone. He picked it out of his pocket and smiled at who was on the other end. "Mitzy?"

"Hey, you wanna know what the water was for?"

"What?"

"Goldie just wanted it because it made her skin smooth, heh."

Fethry raised an eyebrow, though he knew she couldn't see it. "Is that all you called me for?"

"And to say hi. Hi. I was thinking... Maybe we could hang out some time...?"

Bradford nodded, overhearing the conversation. Fethry grinned. It was nice to have finally fixed one of the broken relationships in his life.
