EW Pt 5

Dewey peeked around the corner of the nearest building. Once he was sure it was clear, he waved for his siblings to follow after. They darted across the street, making their way further up the hill. They could now see the mansion gates at a distance, guarded by a small handful of shadows.

"How are we going to get over there?" Dewey asked.

"We could just charge in and hope for the best!" Huey punched the air, preparing himself.

Shaking his head, Louie moved his brother's arms down. "Hang on. Look!" He pointed upwards. Following his gaze, the kids spotted their cargo plane swooping around the mansion. An army of shadows charged it, collected from the vortex and around the Duck property. "That must be Bradford and Gladdy."

"But what are they doing?" After squinting up at the plane, he turned back down to the mansion gate. The shadows split, heading up and off towards the plane. A smaller group replaced them as guards. "Ha! It's a distraction!" Dewey cheered in a hushed voice.

"Come on, we have to get to Lena and help her see she's being ridiculous." Without waiting for an answer, Webby came from behind their hiding place, charging towards the mansion.

"Webby, wait!"

Slapping down onto the pavement in front of her, a group of shadows put her to a halt. She stepped back, eyes wide with start. The triplets came to back her. The lead shadows stretched its form to stand over them, eyes glowing menacingly red. Its hand twisted into a snarling claw, ready for attack. Dewey moved in front of Webby, readying for a fight. His knees buckled beneath him, but he shook the fear off. He couldn't back down now.

The lead shadow finally made his move, charging at the kids. With a frightened scream, Dewey thrust his fist as hard as he could forward. Like a popped fuse, the shadow snapped and fizzled away. Not hesitating, Dewey took Webby's hand and pulled her through the opening. Louie and Huey tagged closely behind. Moving swiftly, the shadows perused.

Dewey's heart pounded with exhilaration. He just punched a shadow and lived. Now he knew: this was bravery. Standing up against the odds to protect the ones he loved most. He felt like he could take on the world.

The gate was insight. The shadows had been spread even thinner, allowing the perfect opportunity to get past. A new wall of shadows formed between the kids and their destination. Dewey skidded to stop, letting go of Webby. She glared at the shadows, moving to a fighting stance. Though with how cute the duckling was, it wasn't all that threatening. Louie and Huey kept their backs turned, preparing for the attackers behind.

In the blink of an eye, a cluster of shadows disappeared in a white goop. They lowered their guard, suspicious of the goop. The shadows behind them also appeared confused. Huey stepped over, knelt down, swiped up the goop on his finger, and licked it. The others stuck out their tongues in disgust.

"It's just banana cream." Huey shrugged.

Rolling in came Owlson in her suit, along with Mark and the bulbs. She put her hands on her hips heroically. "Don't worry, kids! Nothing to fe-" Before she could get her sentence out, a shadow jumped her, causing her to slip on her wheels. She managed to shake it off quickly, letting out a squeal. The shadows behind the kids swapped back to attack mode. They scattered trying to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

Dewey found himself backed up with CEOs, facing a group of monsters. Raising her arm, Owlson readied to launch another pie. It landed flatly on the ground, and Dewey was pretty sure he heard some shadows laugh.

Mark rolled his eyes at her. "Pies aren't going to be an effective weapon against shadows. Give me that." He undid the gauntlet from her suit, earning a whine from her. "Let me just adjust this..." He stuck out his tongue as he worked. The pie launcher swapped out for a canon. Scooping up the oldest bulb, Mark plugged it in. After slipping the weapon onto his own wrist, he aimed, smirking. The blasts from the gauntlet took out a wide range of shadows. After wiping out enough to clear a new way, Mark gave a victory cheer. "Ha! Take that, Gearloose! Who's the better inventor now!"

Dewey thanked them before running off to find the other kids. They met up in a small clearing of shadows, Mark and Owlson distracting a good portion of them.

"Come on! Let's go while it's clear!" Louie waved for them to follow. Huey made it over the gate pretty easily, Webby following in a somewhat more clumsy manner. Louie opened the unlocked gate, simply walking in, deadpanning at the first two. Dewey went Louie's way, moving to close the gate as quick as possible.

They were in.

...

Sneaking inside the mansion, things seemed too still. Well, except the big vortex just above the broken roof. But other than that, the inside was surprisingly quiet.

"Where do you think Fethry and Lena are?" Dewey glanced back at the others, frowning.

"I don't know... What if they're not even here?" Louie looked over the room, uncertain.

As Dewey walked, his shadow hung to the wall, moving with him. Another shadow joined his, stretching large and with twisted teeth to match. It prowled towards his, Dewey spotting it just out of the corner of his eyes. He yelped jumping back at the sight. The threatening shadow shifted into mere hands, Huey attached to them and laughing.

"You should've seen the look on your face!" he giggled.

"Huey!" They all took turns glaring at him.

A thought came to Dewey. He stiffened. "Hey guys, when did our shadows come back?" Their eyes widened with the same realization.

Now caught, their shadows revealed themselves as the monsters they were. Taking their full forms, they pulled themselves off the wall and jumped at the kids. Dewey was tackled to the ground by his own. After some struggling, he managed to kick it off of him. The shadow doubled back, snarling. It moved for another charge.

Out of nowhere, a woman hit the shadow away with a swift backhand. Huey and Webby knocked their shadows into each other. They stumbled back before being sucked up into the vortex. Louie yanked his shadow over shoulder, knocking him hard on the ground.

They took a moment to catch their breaths from the small fight.

Dewey walked up to the woman. "Thanks for helping us. Um, who are you?"

The woman straightened. "I'm Magica, Lena's aunt. You must be her friends she talked so much about."

Webby put on a bright smile. "Hi! I'm Webby!" SHe stuck her hand out to Magica, but Huey smacked Webby's hand back. He glared up at Magica.

"What are you doing?"

"She's Lena's aunt. That makes her one of the bad guys!" he said in a not so hushed tone.

"Well..." Webby frowned, probably still thinking about Lena's betrayal.

"I want to help you stop her. She's so focused on her revenge that she won't listen to me," Magica pleaded. "She trapped me in a magic cage, but she's not used to using her magic and she's trying to keep too many spells up at once. She needs help."

Webby perked up again. "So you're saying there might be a chance that she comes to the good side again? Where is she?" She clasped her hands together desperately.

"She's down in the other bin, looking for anything she wants. Go, quickly!" Magica waved them off.

"What about you?" Huey asked, still unconvinced.

"I'll make sure no shadows go down their with you, that way you'll only have to worry about fighting her."

"Fighting her with the power of friendship," Webby added, grinning more to assure herself than anything else.

The boys exchanged a look. "Yeah, sure, Webbs." They turned to hurry down towards the bin.

...

With uncertainty in their hearts, they reached the bottom of the stairs. They had been discussing a rough plan on the way down. Dewey had never been in the bin before, though Webby had mentioned it once or twice. They spotted Lena down the hall, talking to the ghost next to her who Dewey assumed was Poe. She hadn't noticed them yet. They stepped fully into the corridor. She finally spotted them, stopping mid sentence.

"Well. You guys made it." She came closer, smirking. "After Fethry told me how you had abandoned him, I thought you wouldn't show."

"What have you done with Fethry!" Dewey stepped forward, clenching his fists.

"Put him in the dumb penny. You should thank me. He was annoying." She flipped the coin idly.

They were now only a few yards apart. Standing in rows, they prepared themselves for a face off. Dewey looked to the other kids, as if to say be ready for the plan. After a nod, they broke.

Lena tried her hand at magic, blasting purple energy in an attempt to hit them. Poe stood, stoic and watching. The teen let out a wild laugh, having a little too much fun with the fight. With the fight in the bin, few places stood out to hide. Dewey flung open a door to one of the rooms, releasing a unicorn into the fray. Dewey ducked out of the way, hiding in the room. Huey joined his brother, watching Lena struggled with the unicorn. Her face turned red as she grew fed up. With one quick blast, she finally shrunk the creature. Clopping off, it let out a small neigh.

Dewey scanned over the fight. "We need another distraction."

"On it!" Huey ran back into the fight, turning his cap to the side in a way that, in his words, made him look "rad."

He stood behind Lena, grinning. "Hi."

"Hi. I'm in the middle of something." She tried to ignore him, aiming for Louie and Webby.

"Did you know you've got this little hair that sticks up? It's just something I've noticed about you."

"I don't care." She spun on her heels, reeling for a shot on him.

He ducked, moving too her side and unfazed from her attack. "Yeah, and your head is twenty percent rounder than most people in Duckburg. And there's this tiny little gap in your teeth between the fourth one and fifth one on the right. Also, your evil laugh could use some work. It's just a little too squeaky at the end and-"

"Just shut up!" She tried more vigorously to hit him, but Huey was too quick for her. She glared at Poe, pointing like a spoiled child. "Daddy, do something!" Poe turned to her, doing nothing. She huffed, resorting back to blasting, now running after him.

"Lena!"

She stopped running, startled at her name.

"You are going to get yourself hurt." Louie clicked his tongue as he shook his head. Taking her wrist, he moved it downward and unarmed at Huey. "What have I told you about running with magic?"

"But-"

"No buts!" Huey snickered from somewhere at Louie. "You are grounded, young lady."

Snapping out of it, she yanked away from him. "What is wrong with you people! You're so infuriating!"

Louie gasped dramatically. "Is that any way to speak to your elders? You know, kids who don't obey get swift kicks in the ribs."

"What?"

Dewey swiftly kicked her in the ribs. With a yelp, Lena was knocked to the ground.

She sat up to the triplets standing over her. Scrunching her beak in anger, she let out a wave of magic. "Enough!" She suspended them each in the air, glaring. Her eyes moving between them, Lena counted over them. "Where's Webby?"

...

"Right here!"

Lena spun around to face the young duckling. Webby clenched and unclenched her hands, taking a deep breath. She tried to reassure herself, but she was sure Lena could read the uncertainty all over her face. Lena scoffed. "You're really going to fight me for Fethry? He's not even your real family. I thought you and I were friends." Her face twisted in a fake sadness.

Webby glared at her. "That's what I thought too." With a battlecry, Webby ran at her, clumsy in her steps. She had no clue how she was going to take down Lena. She had the upper hand in all categories, size, skill, cunningness. Webby threw a hesitant fist, unsure if she really did want to hurt her best friend. Lena caught her with her palm, holding her back by her forehead. Lena gave a mocking yawn.

"Please. This is almost sad." Lena walked forward, making Webby slide back with her, still trying to fight. "You're so naive. You hunt down a stranger and try to make friends with them. You tell me all your secrets and all the secrets of your family, just because you don't know how to be quiet. You went along with me, not suspecting a thing, even when I forced you to bring me down here, only pausing a moment to question why you didn't remember why. You were never the least bit suspicious. Pathetic." Lena smirked, watching her words tear away at Webby's strength. "Though, I really should thank you. None of this would've been possible without you. You gave me everything I could've possibly wanted." Leaning in to meet Webby's eye level, she gave her a sinister smile. "You're a good friend, Webby."

Something snapped inside Webby. She reached up, and, grabbing Lena's arm, twisted it back. Webby jumped up and landed a kick to the girl's other set of ribs. Lena doubled back, giving Webby space. Webby tried anything punch, surprising Lena. The teen frantically pulled up a magic force field. Webby knocked Lena back some steps with each move made. Focusing all her energy towards her shield, the boys were released from the air.

"Webby, stop," Lena pleaded, sounding genuine for once. Webby ignored her, so fueled by her anger and guilt. "Look, I'm sorry about that stuff I said. How about I say sorry and you forgive me, eh, bff?"

"No!" Webby jumped up, trying a higher kick. Lena quickly deflected it. "You're a liar! You hurt my family! I could never be friends with someone who would do that!"

With another landed hit, Lena dropped the penny from her fist. Dewey slid under her, snatching the coin out of the air. Lena reached out for him, in the process letting her shield down. Webby landed a kick to her face in the moment. Landing on her backside, Lena glared up at the girl.

"Fine. I tried making amends. Daddy!" Lena looked to Poe, pointing to Webby. "Put an end to her."

Webby shrank under the gaze of the ghost. She took some hesitant steps back.

Finally, the ghost spoke, gravel in his throat. "No."

"No?" Lena glared at her father. "What kind of answer is that? Why?"

"I'm not your puppet, Lena..." His voice was slow, tired from death. "You're my daughter, and I wanted you to be better than this. Stop this."

Lena wiped her beak and stumbled to her feet. "If you won't do it, I will." Aiming her arm, her palm glowed a deep purple. Webby winced in preparation. "Goodbye, Webby."

Lena took the shot.

And missed.

Webby could hear the boys calling out to her from somewhere. As Lena launched forward her magic blast, Poe jumped between the two. His ghostly form whisper away in the contained explosion.

Lena's eyes widened at her mistake. "No! NO!" She jumped forward, trying to grab any scrap of her father left. Her eyes grew watery and her cheeks a fiery red. "You Ducks will pay for this! Whipping around, she threw several more blasts, failing to hit any of them in her tear blinded fury. "Where is the penny!" she screamed.

...

Dewey clutched the copper coin tightly to his chest, hiding around the side of one of the vacant bin rooms. He could hear an angry Lena outside. His chest rose rapidly with breath. Raising the penny, he gave it an awkward smile. "Hey, cousin Fethry." The head side smiled right back at him.

A blast hit the wall opposite him. Dewey scanned over the room. If Lena found him here, she could easily corner him. Once deciding it was a bad hiding spot, he jumped out into the hall, darting in a zigzag pattern. Only problem now was that he could actually see her. Figuring he was probably about to die anyways, he turned back to the penny.

"Look, Fethry, I'm sorry I got so mad about what happened with our mom." Now was a good time for apologies, right? Dewey jumped away from another projectile from Lena. "And I guess I should've realized-" His sentence was interrupted by Lena aiming at the ceiling, nearly dropping a chunk of rubble on him. "I guess I should've realized that when we lost her, you lost her too." More ceiling pieces fell down. He thrust himself from the wall and landed on his stomach. "Okay, so maybe this isn't the best time for a heart to heart, but what I'm trying to say is, it's not necessarily your fault our mom died."

Feet appeared in his line of vision. His gaze urned upward, finding Lena there. "Give. Me. The penny."

Sitting up, Dewey scooted back to the wall, pressing his back against the wall. He guarded the penny with his form.

Lena gave a laugh, finally loosing it. "I'll make you a deal, Dewey. You give me that penny and I'll tell you what happened to your mom."

He watched her, wary. "I already know."

"No, no, no, no." She slowly stepped towards him. "What really happened to her. Do you want to know what I found at Selene's motel?" Holding out her hand, she waited for the penny. "A news article about Della Duck. And I'll tell you what it said if you give me the penny."

Dewey tipped the coin harder. "What are you talking about?"

"Come on, Dewey. The truth, for one cent. Fethry lost your mom. I'm trying to help you find her."

Dewey stared up at her, not knowing what to do. He looked for any openings in her defense. Huey and Louie stood away, watching as if eager to see what he would pick. Shaking himself, Dewey glared up at Lena. "No." He ducked out from underneath her, making a run for it.

She turned on her heels, readying more magic in her fist. "Why you-" With the twist of her wrist, the spell went flying for Dewey. With nothing else to defend himself with, Dewey raised the closest object, the penny.

Bright light emitted from the coin. When it faded, there stood Fethry. Hands on his hips, he grinned. The kids cheered. "Way to dispel your own spell, De Spell." He laughed at his own joke, making Lena angrier.

"No! It wasn't supposed to go this way!" She stopped her foot, her beak scrunched in a frown. Her eyes glowed purple along with her fists. She charged Fethry, trying to land a magical punch. He blocked it, trying to knock her back.

As he fought with her, Fethry looked to Dewey. "So, about what you said, I'm sorry I couldn't respond, I was a coin. I'm sorry I convinced your mom to leave you guys behind. I wasn't thinking things through. You guys mean the world to me, and I never wanted to hurt you guys. I'm-"

"Oh my gosh, we're having a fight! Stop ignoring me!" Lena gave a clumsy punch, just determined to land a hit somewhere.

"The point is, I'm sorry! You too, Lena. I'll try to pay attention to this fight wholeheartedly." He kicked her in the gut, sending her backward. Laying on her back, she let out a frustrated groan. "Well, now the fight's over, so I guess I don't have to listen to you anymore."

Lena threw her arm over her face, giving a muffled scream. "You're so annoying! Don't you ever shut up!"

Footsteps drew the family's attention to the stairs. Magica rushed down the steps. Following behind her were Bradford, Gladdy, and Mitzy. The latter three caught Fethry up in hug, knocking him to the ground.

Lena stumbled to her feet, fists still flaming purple. She watched the cheerful family with disgust. Raising her hand, she attempted one last attack.

Instead of launching forward, her magic shifted to a blue color before fading away. She stared a her hands in disbelief. Magica came to stand next to her niece, her own hands a light blue. "That's enough for you, young lady."

"No!" Lena tried her hand at her abilities once again, only to find them stolen from her. She ran over to her aunt. "Give me back my powers."

"Listen here, Lena, you've caused enough trouble for today." Hands on her hips, Magica narrowed her eyes at Lena. Dewey and Fethry came to meet the two. Magica nodded to the adult. "She won't be a problem for you guys anymore. I apologize on behalf of niece. We'll be out of your hair now." Picking up Lena over her shoulder, Magica turned to leave.

"This isn't over, Ducks!" Lena snarled at them, trying to wrestle out of her aunt's grip. "I'll be back, and you're going to wish you had just taken my deal, Dewey. You'll never know what I found. I will destroy this family if it's the last thing I-"

Magica flipped her wrist, blocking Lena's mouth with magic. "Alright, that's quite enough."

Huey, Louie, and Webby cheered at the mess being over. Huey playfully punched Webby in the shoulder. "Where did you learn to fight like that! It was epic!"

Webby stared at her hands. "I don't know..."

Dewey took a deep breath of relief. Fethry ruffled his feathers. "I think we'll be alright."

Dewey smiled up at him. "If our family can survive that, I think we can survive anything."

...

The old television fizzled to life at the click of a button. With its poor signal, it managed to portray some sort of image. A news broadcast. "Tonight, here in Duckburg, the eclipse led to some quite frightening results. A vortex appeared over the Duck manor, releasing shadows which ravaged the town. Local influencer, Fethry Duck, says that the problem has been dealt with. Hopefully, there will be now more shadows attacks tonight, or ever for that matter." The screen displayed the Duck family, standing in front of their mansion.

Della immerged from the bathroom, drying her long hair with a gold towel. She moved to the couch, figuring she'd watch whatever was on. Once she caught sight of the family on tv, she gasped. In the front of the family stood three boys in color coded outfits. She couldn't move her eyes from the screen.

"Boys?"

End of episode 11! Stick around because there's one chapter left! ;)
