Immortally Beloved

Immortally Beloved began with a gripping urgency that pulled us in immediately.  The details were precise and clearly portrayed what was happening, what the character was feeling, and what the character was seeing. Almost every sense was used, which helped us share the experience with the main character and even those around her.

Eleni was a smart character. She observed those around her, knew how others saw her, and what would be expected of her given the time she was in. She was a character that we could like, enjoy reading about, and maybe grow to relate to on some level. Well-rounded, despite being smart and spirited, she felt a familiar fear and panic that was highlighted at the beginning of Chapter One—her inner thoughts were very understandable, as well.

The tense was steady, written in the present, something that can be incredibly difficult to stick to sometimes when telling a story. As far as grammar mistakes go, Immortally Beloved was practically flawless. The flow was smooth, too, dishing out a lot of information without making us lose interest.

There are a lot of breaks, however, to switch between the past and present, but a date was given at the top of the chapters so that was nice.

The setting was realistic as well, and the author incorporated the French language very nicely.
