Covers

Everyone likes to believe in the ever said "never judge a book by its cover" shpeal. And yeah, some diamonds can be hiding under some dirt but everyone is attracted to something by how it looks. Something draws your eye and it's usually the cover art.

So a great way to draw someone's eye, to get them to click on your book, is by an attractive cover. If it looks nice and appears like you've put a good amount of time into it, they'll think the same about your writing.

We highly recommend Canva. https://www.canva.com/

Making an account is completely free and a lot of the features are free as well. Some add-ons like illustrations you have to pay for because people made them and uploaded them but otherwise, you have everything right at your fingertips.

Canva works for desktop and has a great app as well. They have premade size templates for banners, covers, etc. They have a specific one for Wattpad as well and fits perfectly. Their resolution is great as well so when you save your cover and upload it, you won't be left with a blurry mess.

We've used Canva for our own covers! In fact, this very book's cover was made using Canva. It's very helpful for something simplistic and clean.

However, if you want something with more flare you can make that as well. They have over a million free images you can choose from, multitudes of fonts to mess around with, sizing, and more. Have fun and experiment until you have something you like. Even if it's not your end-goal graphic, it's something nice that people can appreciate.

Canav also includes premade "covers" or templates. A picture or background is already selected with fonts already placed. All you do is replace the text with your own title and author name (we recommend using one, not a username with numbers in it).

Some tips:

• Use a good ratio. Don't just slap your title, subtitle, subtext, and author name on there. Make sure when you straighten it out (or angle it, whatever you want), it's a decent size so people can read it. That said, the title should be larger than the subtext and subtitle (e.g., This is how monsters are made and The Grandalor Series/A Grandalor Novel).

• Choose a font that goes with your genre/story. EDO tends to lean more to the horror side of things so we recommend to not use it for something in humor/teen fiction.

• When choosing a color for your font, think of your characters and what your story is about. Is the premade orange going to fit? Will a dark red match better?

• While looking for a photo, use terms that suit your story. If you're writing something for romance, look up things such as flowers, date, hand holding,... Anything that comes to mind that's relevant to your story, see if you can find a photo that matches. If they don't have you like, try pexels ( https://www.pexels.com/ ) or pixabay ( https://pixabay.com/ ). They have plenty of royalty free stock photos that you can use.
