Chapter 2
To my surprise the next thing to step out of the woods is a boy that appears to be my age, with curly light brown hair, carrying a handful of clothes. He walks forward to stand in front of the small light gray wolf, almost protectively. His chocolate brown eyes betray him by showing his uncertainty. Focusing on his heartbeat alone, I hear it pound quickly in his chest.
"What the hell is happening?" I whisper to Gabriel, but he looks just as confused as I do.
Shaking his head in bewilderment, Gabriel stays silent, watching them carefully. Suddenly, the black wolf violently lurches forward, arching it's back. In the blink of an eye, thick black fur turns into the tan skin of a large, burly, and intimidating man. He's completely naked as he rises from his knees to his full towering height, taking a pair of shorts from the brunette. My lips part in shock as I stare at his face, which held a snout only seconds ago.
In contrast to the dark fur of the wolf he just was, his hair is dirty blonde and reaches the top of his shoulders. The neatly trimmed beard cropped close to his face, the crease between his brows, and the faint crows feet at the corners of his dark blue eyes, which glint with matured authority, are all features that give him a middle-aged appearance.
"Werewolves," Gabriel mutters in disbelief, gawking at the four of them.
I whip my head toward him. "Werewolves? Like shape shifters?" I question incredulously.
The light gray wolf mimics the blonde mans actions, with a rough twist and shake of his body, he shifts behind the brunette, discreetly reaching forward to take the last pair of shorts.
"You have got to be kidding me," I mutter.
A teenage boy with short black hair, no older than fifteen years old, replaces the smaller, light gray wolf. He steps out from behind the brunette, his large dark eyes burning with underlying anger.
"How is that even possible?" I ask, my eyes snapping between all four of them.
Gabriel shakes his head lightly. "I don't know. They're supposed to be extinct. The last one I heard of died a long time ago..." his voice trails off.
"I do know that they're very sensitive to power, they must have felt yours the moment we got close enough. I doubt they even know I'm here," he adds.
"Let's keep it that way. The less they know, the better." I grip the handle, prepared to open the door. "This should be fun," I mutter sarcastically.
Gabriel's hand shoots out, and suddenly latches around my arm before I can open the door. I turn to him with a quizzical expression that quickly fades when I see the look on his face.
I quickly turn forward, looking out the window to avoid his piercing gaze. Shaking my head, I say, "Don't look at me like that, Gabe."
"You can't hurt or kill any of them, Victoria," he says warningly. In the corner of my eye, I can see his eyebrow raise into an expectant expression.
I whip my head back toward him and immediately start to say, "They're not just gonna politely move out of the way, Gabe. I'm gonna have to-"
"Victoria," he says with a stern tone, cutting off my argument.
I sigh harshly, and dramatically lean back into my seat. "Fine, but I have to do something to scare them off. The last thing we need is a bunch of werewolves sniffing around."
"I'm sure you'll figure something out," he replies, shrugging carelessly.
"Well, you're a lot of help," I mutter sarcastically with a scoff.
I swiftly pop open the car door and slide out, feeling four intense glares immediately fall on me. The brunette stares with widening, shocked eyes while the blonde leader maintains his strong, angry stance. A faint smirk tugs at my lips as I close the door behind me, and start toward the group. The leader watches me cautiously with a challenging gleam in his eyes as I come to a stop in front of the car. When I scan over the group, the wolf with honey blonde fur, lowers its head and snarls with flat ears, but I pay it no mind.
"Is there something I can help you boys with?" I call out, my eyes shifting between the three males.
Power rolls off of me in subtle waves, like the calm before a storm, it's meant to be taken as a warning.
They hide it well, but I can smell their fear as it lingers in the air around them. The brunette seems to be the most uncertain, his brown eyes nervously flickering between me and the large blonde man.
"You are not human. I don't know what you are, but you're in my territory. Leave immediately," the blonde haired man, once black wolf, commands gruffly. His voice is low and authoritative.
A dry chuckle is my immediate response, veins burning with underlying irritation and impatience that I force away.
"Is this how you welcome everyone new to town?" I ask, tilting my head as I keep my eyes locked on his.
He growls lowly at me in return, obviously not finding any amusement in the situation.
"Leave," he barks, taking a threatening step forward.
"No can do. I don't give a damn if i'm on your territory or not. I have a place to be, and your pack of mutts is in my way." I voice with a light shake of my head.
The youngest teenager with black hair, growls lowly at me and my eyes snap to his. Anger bubbles in my chest and my power sizzles around me, daring him to start a fight as my eyes darken.
"Aiden," the blonde leader says lowly in warning, turning his head in the direction of the bold teenager, before his eyes land on me again. "Leave now! I'm giving you one last chance." His deep voice booms through the empty road.
The atmosphere is tense, comparative to two powerful forces preparing for a fight.
"You don't know what you're getting into, Dog," I spit with venom in my tone.
Aiden, the youngest of the group snaps, releasing vicious growls, clearly not liking the insult and lack of respect. He bares his teeth at me, and in an instant, all hell breaks loose. He charges at me, pushing past the brunette, with rage in his eyes while his nails lengthen into sharp claws.
