Chapter 19
"Woah, wait, hold on," Zeke suddenly announces, dramatically waving his hands in the air and standing from his seat. "So, what your saying is this Caroline chick gave birth to a nephilim, that then got pregnant with Lucifer's child?" He asks incredulously.
"Yes," I answer flatly.
"What the hell," Cayden mumbles from his spot on the couch.
"We're talking about the real Lucifer here? The actual devil?" Zeke questions, raising his eyebrows at me.
"Are there any other Lucifer's out there?" I reply, aggravation laced in my tone.
"Are you always so sarcastic?" Zeke grumbles, crossing his arms over his broad chest.
"Only when i'm around dumb people," I retort quickly.
Zeke opens his mouth, probably to argue, but Gabriel steps between us before he can.
"Would you two knock it off," Gabriel says sternly.
He motions for us to put some distance between each other, watching us with an expectant expression. With an annoyed huff and a sharp glare, I take a few steps back. Zeke grumbles something incoherently under his breath, but sits back on the armrest anyway.
"You're like a bunch of children," Gabriel murmurs, running a hand through his hair.
Cayden snickers at Zeke's sulking form and Alpha Gage grins, shaking his head lightly. Zeke sends them both a hard look before turning back to Gabriel and I.
"So, if the baby's father is Lucifer, then what does that make the baby? The Antichrist?" Zeke questions, sounding skeptical and unbothered.
Before I can stop myself, I wince at his harsh words. Of course I've heard that word before, from the angels, but it's like a stab to the chest coming from him. Zeke notices my discomfort and tilts his head as he scans over my face with his piercing green eyes. Gabriel also sees my reaction and replies quickly.
"No, absolutely not," he says sternly. "The child has angelic grace and a human soul from Seraphina. It does have something much darker due to Lucifer being the father, but it's certainly not the Antichrist."
"Wouldn't the baby just get angelic grace from Lucifer? I mean, even after falling from heaven or whatever, he's still an archangel right?" Cayden questions, raising his eyebrow.
I take a few steps backward, sinking further into the comfort of the shadows behind me, feeling tense and uncomfortable with this conversation.
"No." Gabriel shakes his head, a contemplative frown etched onto his features. "Lucifer's grace isn't exactly angelic anymore. It's twisted and dark due to his time in Hell."
A dull ache forms in my head and my eyesight blurs for a second, but I blink the haze away and instead focus on the conversation.
"So the baby is part angel, part human, and part archangel-demon-thing?" Cayden questions, his face screwing up in confusion.
"Well, uh, yes, sort of," Gabriel stutters out unsurely.
Zeke's eyes flitter between Gabriel and me with a dangerous question swirling in them.
"Okay, so why are you telling us this?" Zeke questions, looking at us quizzically.
Gabriel and I glance at each other, holding a silent conversation. I can see the question in his eyes, he's just waiting for me to make the final decision. After a minute of hesitant silence, I subtly nod at him. He returns the nod, eyes lingering on my face, before turning around to face the others again.
"Seraphina gave birth to a baby girl seventeen years ago," Gabriel voices tentatively.
I inhale sharply and my mind reels as I try to remain calm. I can see Zeke glance at me, out of the corner of my eye, but I know that if I look at him, he'll be able to see all of the emotion swarming inside of me.
"She named her Victoria," Gabriel finally says, his eyes sliding back to my figure.
Everyone gets deathly still and I can feel their attention shift to me. The tension in the air is practically palpable as I look over their expressions carefully.
Noah has his typical wide eyed, fearful look as he stares at me. It reminds of the first time he saw me, when I had just got into town. That feels like it was months ago, but in reality, it was only about two weeks ago.
In contrast to Noah's wide eyed stare, Alpha Gage looks more defensive, like he's preparing to protect his son and pack members from me. It's ironic considering that he was thanking me for helping them not that long ago.
Cayden is in a daze, and appears to still be processing Gabriel's words, making me wonder if maybe we should have waited longer to tell them.
After a moment of analyzing them, my eyes slide to Zeke, only to find that he's already watching me. Our eyes lock, trapping me in his intense gaze. His eyes are full of disbelief as he scans over my features. My face stays impassive, not letting him see the storm of emotion brewing inside my chest.
"You're lying," Zeke whispers shaking his head in denial.
I sigh defeatedly before releasing the tight hold I constantly keep on my power, letting my overwhelming aura expand and flow through the room. The temperature rises and the atmosphere feels charged, like there's an invisible current of electricity running through it. The flames in the fireplace flare and hiss.
"He's telling the truth," I say, voice strong and steady.
Zeke's lips part in shock, his eyes never leaving mine. Alpha Gage, Cayden, and Noah all jump to their feet with rigid frames. A low, gutteral growl rumbles from Alpha Gage's chest, directed toward me. A shock of anger runs through my veins and my eyes turn blood red as they move to him, but that's the only semblance of emotion that I show. It's frustrating how quick they are to decide I'm a threat now that they know who my father is.
One thing that they all have in common is the mistrust now swarming their features as they look at me.
My crimson painted eyes move to Zeke and I realize that he's the only one who doesn't look angry or defensive. There's an intense emotion etched into his features that I can't decipher. Alpha Gage growls again, breaking my staring contest with his son.
He takes a threatening step toward me and Gabriel is quick to bristle his wings, stepping closer to the Alpha and taking a protective stance in front of me, blocking me from the his view. I lightly grab Gabriel's wrist and gently tug him to my side instead, discreetly shaking my head at him.
"Easy, Alpha. You'll do well to remember that I saved your son only hours ago." I voice with an edge to my tone.
