Chapter 14

The demon crashes to the living room floor and tumbles into various pieces of furniture when we arrive at the cabin. This makes everyone in the room gasp, jump, or swear as they shoot up from their seats on the couch.

"I found him," I announce casually, taking in their shocked silence.

"What the hell," Cayden mumbles in disbelief.

The demon's head is bowed forward, his face hidden behind a curtain of ebony black hair. Short gnarly horns, from his temples, poke through the dark strands. His skin is now an ashy gray and his frame appears larger in size. Suddenly, bat like wings rip through his shirt and stretch out at his sides, knocking over a glass vase in the process. The bottom edges of his wings are darker than the rest and spotted with small holes, as if they were once burned.

His head snaps up and everyone behind me, once again, cringes or recoils. His cheekbones are much more prominent than they were before, making his cheeks appear hallow. His jaw is sharper and his fingernails have turned into pointed black claws. His eyes, including the sclera, are completely pitch black. They're empty, bone chilling pits of darkness that would swallow you whole, if given the chance.

"Well that's... interesting," I mutter.

His lifeless black eyes scan over the group of five people behind me and he grins at them.

"An archangel, what an honor it is to be in your presence," he snickers mockingly.

His voice is a low disturbing hiss that lingers in the air. He rises to his full height and tilts his head as he looks over the werewolves.

"I see the dogs are still alive," he remarks.

I take a few confident steps toward him, square my shoulders, and I ask, "Why did you attack them?"

He stares at me again and his grin only seems to become wider. "To get to you of course," he replies. "I've spent a long time looking for you, Angelus Mortis."

I narrow my eyes at him, the air in the rooms grows heavy and uneasy.

"Angel of Death." I hear Zeke mumble, translating the Latin.

"Why would you attack them to get to me?" I question in a stern voice, ignoring the Latin name he gave me.

"You're strong, I'll give you that, but you're clearly not very smart," he taunts. "You care for the mutts."

"What makes you think that?" I scoff.

His eyes slide to Zeke and a sardonic grin splits across his face, before he looks at me again. "Well, you healed him, didn't you?"

I stay silent, unsure how to respond. Of course I healed him, but that doesn't mean I care for him, does it?

I can feel Zeke's scorching gaze, burning holes in the back of my head, waiting for me to respond.

"Why have you been looking for me?" I ask, ignoring his suggestions about Zeke.

"He... wants you," he says vaguely.

"Who's he?" I spit, loosing my patience.

"Your father," he hisses, leaning forward.

My blood runs cold and my anger falters, shock flickers across my face. That's impossible, there's no way he knows about me. My surprise was clear enough for the demon to see and he barks out a hideous laugh as he realizes that he caught me off guard. I suppress the urge to turn to Gabriel for his reaction.

"You're lying," I growl, my voice becoming even lower.

"Did you really think that he doesn't know about you? You are his only heir after all." he says finishing with another sadistic cackle.

His words spark anger and my eyes blaze with fury. I let out a low gutteral growl that vibrates through the whole room.

"You'd be unstoppable with us," the demon says. "The angels would never be able to get anywhere near you."

My anger only rises and my breathing becomes erratic as I start to loose control. I can feel my eyes turning blood red and my power swarming around me.

"Gabriel, make them leave. They shouldn't see this." I snap, my voice now a low demonic growl that's overall unrecognizable.

After a moment of silence, I hear shuffling behind me, but my eyes stay fixated on the demon.

"No, I'm staying," Zeke suddenly says sternly.

The demon chuckles at Zeke, his eyes flicking from one person to another. After some more silence, I hear a sigh that I can recognize as Gabriel's and I realize that all five of them have stayed.

At that very moment, my control snaps and I fall into the darkest parts of myself. Any semblance of my humanity leaves entirely.
