Chapter 12

"What did you do?" he asks, his voice hoarse and quiet.

With the last of the pain fading quickly, i'm able to stand up straight and answer confidently, feeling almost back to normal.

"You were poisoned, it was seconds away from killing you and you were losing to much blood. I had to heal you or you would've die," I answer.

He scans over my face, brows furrowed, before staring deep into my eyes. It's almost as if he's trying to understand the inner workings of my mind.

"Why did you do that?" he asks, disbelief laced in his tone.

I open my mouth to answer, only to close it again when I realize that I don't know the answer.

Why did I do that?

I didn't need to help him. I owe him nothing and it's not like we're even friendly towards each other. I've only met him once and during that one time I threatened to kill him and his friends. I could have shut the door and left him to die, but I didn't. Why didn't I?

I turn away from his scrutinizing gaze and my eyes land on Cayden's leg, which is still bleeding profusely. I start toward him and hold my hand out, palm open, ready to heal him. He steps back swiftly, looking at me uncertainly.

"Hold still," I demand.

After a hesitant pause, he listens but stays stiff and tense. I let my palm hover over him and that familiar luminescent glow forms between my palm and his chest. Cayden gasps as I feel it working its way through him, healing every scratch and cut on its way, before lastly closing the nasty gash on his leg.

I withdraw my hand and his eyes scan over his leg before they snap up, he looks at me with confusion swirling in his blue eyes, obviously not understanding why I would heal him.

"You were bleeding on my floor," I answer his silent question carelessly.

He lets out a snort while I turn my attention to Alpha Gage, letting my power hover around him, discreetly searching him for injuries.

"You're next," I say sternly, jerking my head in his direction.

His worried eyes flicker to me, before falling on Zeke again.

"Oh, no I'm fine," he dismisses, just like I thought he would.

"You have a mild concussion and two broken ribs. I don't know how quick you can heal, but I'm certain I can do it faster." I say matter-of-factly.

He sighs, reluctantly nodding in agreement. I make my way to him and heal him quickly, just as I did with Cayden.

"Thank you for helping us," he voices tentatively once I'm done, letting me hear how truly genuine he is.

After a silent few seconds of analyzing his expression and noticing his sincerity, I nod at him in response. A question suddenly pops into my head making me spin around and look over the room.

"Where's Noah?" I inquire, voicing my thoughts.

"He's in here," Cayden's voice calls from the living room.

I transport next to them immediately to get there faster, hoping that Noah doesn't have any serious injuries that I didn't notice earlier. Cayden jumps backward with wide eyes, clearly startled, when I appear next to him.

"Jesus, you can't do that voodoo stuff all the time. You almost gave me a heart attack," he mutters petulantly, clutching his chest.

I roll my eyes at his dramatic behavior before focusing completely on Noah, who is sitting on a black chair, staring at nothing. My power hovers around him, searching for injuries. Alpha Gage and Zeke walk into the living room, their attention also falling on Noah.

"His injuries are all minor, he'll heal soon," I determine. "He's just a little shocked."

They nod in acknowledgement and my mind starts to race with unanswered questions.

"Can you explain exactly what happened?" I ask, my eyes shifting between them.

Alpha Gage nods with a sullen expression. Noticing his tense frame, I gesture for them to sit and lead them further into the living room.

After getting relatively comfortable on the edge of the couch, across from Alpha Gage, Zeke, and Cayden, I wait quietly for one of them to speak. The room is submerged into a heavy, tense silence as they collect themselves, momentarily getting lost in their thoughts.

"We felt it as soon as he got into pack territory," Alpha Gage starts. "He looked human at first, and he said that he was looking for someone. We told him we couldn't help him and he needed to leave, but that pissed him off. His eyes turned pitch black and he got these sharp claws."

His words only confirm my suspicions that they were attacked by a demon, and it sounds like a very strong one if it was able to fight against four, fully-grown werewolves at once.

"He attacked us," Cayden mutters. "He was so damn fast that we couldn't take him. Zeke heard us and showed up, but when he saw Zeke, he clawed the hell out of him. You're house was the closest and Zeke looked really bad."

"How did you know I could help him?" I ask curiously.

"I didn't know for sure, I was just hoping you'd be willing to help him somehow," Alpha Gage answers.

I nod in understanding, but their explanation only leaves me with more questions. If the demon was looking for someone, which is probably me, then why would he go after them instead?

Gabriel crosses my mind and I realize that I should probably tell him what's happening. I'm sure he's almost done in heaven anyway.

"Gabriel," I mutter firmly, just above a whisper.

Zeke hears me and tilts his head in confusion. He's about to question me when suddenly Gabriel appears, seemingly out of thin air, directly in front of me.

"What happened? Are you alright?" he asks frantically, pulling me to my feet and looking at me closely with worry in his eyes.

"Calm down, Wings. I'm fine." I brush him off lazily.

He stops his frantic movements and stares at me, waiting for an explanation. His eyes then land on Noah and he spins around to look at the others. His confusion increases tenfold as he blinks at the bloody, dirty werewolves sitting on the couch.

He leans closer to me, as if that will stop them from hearing him. "What's happening?" he asks slowly.

"They were attacked by a demon," I answer. "I healed them, but it poisoned Zeke and almost killed him."

Gabriel frowns, turning to me, he asks, "Why would a demon attack werewolves?"

"I guess he's looking for me," I offer with a shrug. "I'm gonna track him, I doubt he went far."

Gabriel whips his head toward me, obviously not agreeing with my plan. Before he can utter a word of protest, I close my eyes and focus on tracing the darkness that follows demons like a shadow, before transporting myself there.
