Chapter 7: Seeing Double

The Sanctuary was even more beautiful than I imagined. As I passed through the open gates, I noted the multiple pastures I could see. There were a few horses in each one. I wondered just exactly how many more were in the barn and pastures beyond. My poor sedan rattled its way to the round-about, screeching to a halt in front of a man with a very familiar face. I squinted at him trying to figure out just what the fuck was happening.

I wasn't one to believe in coincidence.

However, as I studied the Brandon look-alike, I became confused. This man was wearing a button-up shirt that seemed too stiff for his relaxed stance. His navy suit pants too formal for the energy he exuded. My eyes definitely lingered on how snug they were too.

Whoever was with him was a blessed woman.

Or Man.

I'm not one to judge.

It was his eyes, though, that were the largest difference. This "Brandon's" blue eyes were lighter than my Brandon's; happier. If this was the same Brandon from the incident, then I was rich and wealthy.

And I'm not nearly close to either of those things.

"What's your name?"

My voice was baffled as I stepped out of my car. The man just looked startled, and a little dazed as he took in my approaching form. I had decided to be loud and proud with my condition for this interview. I didn't want to be hired on a lie. I wore a tight plain t-shirt and a pair of stretchy slacks I found at the back of my closet. My nicest pair of flats were the only shoe my swollen tootsies could fit in.

"Oh, uh, you're pregnant?"

His voice elevated on the word "pregnant"; probably as close to a teenage voice crack as he could get. I refused to cringe or look ashamed. Even if all that came out of this, was me getting to see the horses, it would be worth it. And if by some blessing I am hired, then it won't be a surprise to them later down the road.

"Clearly." I deadpanned before continuing; "What's your name?"

A raging blush took over his cheeks; he was a cutie. So similar, yet so astoundingly different from Brandon.

"It's Corey Henshaw. Its a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Bosques."

Corey shot his hand out, which I quickly shook, with a solid grip. Mama didn't raise not limp-fish handshaker. Well, Mama didn't really raise anyone, but that's besides the point.

"Just Ms. not Mrs., please. You should know Mr. Henshaw, that you have a doppelganger wandering the city. Looks like you, almost down to the freckle."

I watched as amusement danced in those cerulean eyes.

"Is that so?"

I suddenly got the feeling I was on the outside of a joke; like I was missing something. Before I could question any further, Corey began to lead me around the side of what looked like the main house to another. While the main home looked like a modern colonial house, large pillars and all, this other one was more subtle.

"This is our business headquarters for The Sancturary. We conduct all interviews, meetings, etcetera here. Should you be hired, you will have an assigned office in this building. Although most of the work you would be doing for this job will require you in the barn and outside."

I nodded, keeping up with his pace and words. Excitement bubbled in my gut. I could work here. As slim of a possibility it was, I allowed my imagination to run free. It would be hard work, but that was nothing new to me. My entire life I have had to labor for everything I've ever needed or wanted.

"I am in charge of the financials' mostly as general manager. Recently, I have been taking on some of the more direct care side things, with some of my brothers as they have time, but hopefully that changes soon."

He dazzled me with a smile that crinkled his eyes.

"Axel Toma is the head honcho, so to speak. The Sanctuary is his baby; he's worked incredibly hard to establish and maintain this world we have here. We all have. That is why he is going to be conducting your interview and making the decision on whether you should be hired. If there is any of us to impress, he's the one."

While Corey's words were more soothing, instead of damning, I worried my lip. It was clear that this man was passionate about The Sanctuary. I wondered what else this place did other than a rehabilitation for horses.

I wanted to know more, but I refused to look desperate.

I could do this.  Even better, I would convince Mr. Toma I could do this.

"Here we are. Goodluck Ms. Bosques, I'm sure you will do perfectly fine."

I returned his charming smile, with a gentle one of my own, before stepping into the office as Corey held the door open.

I could totally do this.
