Chapter 4: Pickles & Chocolate Milkshakes

I had in fact, never been to Bob's Diner seeing as it was located almost on the opposite side of the city from my place.

It was also technically called Bob's Diner 2.0, which was interesting. We were sitting in a window booth on the far left. I was by the window with my back towards the entrance. Raven eagerly took the seat beside me, Axel across from me, and Brandon beside him.

They had driven here in a black SUV that I assumed was Axel's since he was the driver. As crazy as it seemed, I already gave these men some trust. Enough to follow these strangers in my beat up sedan to an unknown destination with the promise of a free warm meal.

I wasn't ashamed to take charity when it was given; life wasn't kind enough for me to feel that way.

Axel's face had turned into a calm mask.

His age showed in his face handsomely. I found myself captivated by the older man. He was studying the menu in front of him vaguely, as if he already knew what he would order. I looked over to Brandon who hadn't even bothered to pick-up his menu. The blonde had his beautiful eyes focused on me, only a hint of anger remaining. I wondered if I had upset him or if he always looked a little bit angry.

Unbothered, I stared back at him boldly, and noticed another emotion in those eyes. The sadness and pain hidden there was intimately familiar to me.

I tilted my head, wondering what or who had hurt him in his past, and he looked away.

Raven had one of his arms resting behind me along the back of the booth and was relaxed back with a foot sticking out into the aisle. I cringed thinking it would be a tripping hazard for anyone who walked past. He was currently gulping down his glass of water that the waitress had given each of us.

Chasing after purse snatchers in the summer heat would make me thirsty too.

We fell into a silence that was bordering on uncomfortable, when the waitress came back to take our orders. I quickly perused the menu while the guys ordered. When she got to me, I grinned, knowing my order would confuse the men around me.

"I would like a large chocolate milkshake, a bowl of pickles, and a basket of fries please."

The waitress looked concerned as she walked away to put our order in, while Brandon snorted.

"I'm sorry, do you have an issue with what I ordered?" I boldly asked the man, sassiness thickly coating my words.

I never handled being mocked or made fun of well.

My defense mechanism was to retaliate verbally, and physically if necessary.

"Yeah, what are you? Pregnant? That's the most absurd order I've ever heard someone make," Brandon's tone was haughty, his arms crossed, and eyes narrowed at me in a challenge.

I smirked knowing exactly how to make this man eat his words; I just had to tell the truth.

"Yes, as a matter of fact. I am."

His whole body seemed to freeze as his mind rebooted.

Even Axel and Raven had paused in their movements.

Axel's hand was half way to his glass of water, suspended in air, unmoving. Raven had snapped his head towards me, his mouth open in a comical "o" shape.

Their reactions suddenly made me feel insecure about my situation, so I lashed out.

"Jesus, don't look so astounded. It's none of your business anyways. I just wanted to shock Brandon since he was acting like a brat."

I huffed and crossed my arms, turning my attention to the parking lot outside the window. I was being rude, it was clear to all of us. I felt almost immediately guilty. They were paying for my meal, and had got my purse back for me, I shouldn't be mean to any of them.

I was too stubborn to apologize though.

"Be calm, malen'kaya l'vitsa. We have no judgments here. Only surprise." I could feel Raven's hand play lightly with my tied up hair as he spoke.

Blushing, I shifted my head so his hand fell away.

"He's right, Rosalia. We aren't judging you; or anything like that. We just weren't expecting a small thing like you, who chased a thief while wearing flip flops might I add, to be pregnant." Axel was wholly amused with the situation.

Laughter lit up his eyes and his lips twitched as if he was holding in laughter.

"I'm not exactly tiny. I'm 5'10, which is absurdly tall for a girl, if you haven't noticed." It was the only response I could come up with.

"Da, tall, but tiny. You are too thin." Raven said as he studied me, dark eyes traveling over my form, momentarily pausing on my stomach.

Frowning, I shifted so my body was slightly turned away from the man.

I didn't realize I was basically hiding my abdomen from him until he met my gaze with his curious one and tilted his head as if he couldn't understand my actions.

"Are we going to ignore the fact that she called me a brat?" Brandon sounded, and looked, like he was pouting.

I had never seen a grown man pout before, he seems to be around my age, and it was kind of adorable.

It didn't change the annoyance he sparked in me.

"Da, well looks like a duck, is a duck." Raven got the saying wrong, but I snickered knowing what he ment.

Brandon seemed to deepen his pout at Ravens teasing, and for the first time I found myself wondering how they all knew each other. They seemed very comfortable and familiar.

"How do you guys know each other? Are you friends or what?"

I was still feeling defensive and couldn't control my tone.

Before anyone could answer the waitress brought our food out. Axel had some kind of wrap and fresh potato chips. Brandon and Raven had thick, juicy looking burgers smothered in cheese and bacon. They each had fries as well.

When the waitress set my order in front of me, I almost drooled.

I had been craving pickles and a chocolate milkshake for days now. The fries were just an added bonus. I immediately began to eat, placing a pickle in my mouth and taking a gulp of milkshake, chewing so the flavors combined. It was just as delicious as I had been imagining.

I didn't miss the disgust that coated Brandon's face.

"We are brothers." Raven responded to my question before taking a huge bite of his burger.

Brothers? They looked nothing alike; their age differences were obvious too. I guess it could be possible, but I wasn't sure how. Axel caught my confused expression and explained further.

"Us three, and two more, are brothers. Only Brandon, and his twin Corey, are blood related. However, we are still a family and consider ourselves brothers."

Axel's explanation was enough to satisfy my curiosity.

Nodding in acknowledgment of his words, I refocused back on my food.

I finished my pickles and milkshake faster than any of the guys got through their meals. I slowed down when it came to my fries. I grabbed the ketchup and mustard that were standing at the end out our table. After drowning my fries properly, I began to eat them, ignoring the disbelieving groan from Brandon.

I didn't care what age he was; if that boy wasn't careful, I was gonna make him cry.

I finished my fries a little bit after the guys had finished their meals. They had started conversing amongst each other; Axel was asking how their businesses were doing. Apparently, Brandon ran a mechanic shop somewhere and Raven owned a gun range.

Satisfied with my meal, even though it wasn't very healthy, I leaned back in the booth and rested my hands over my belly. My little girl let me know her joy by fluttering around. I smiled to myself, while watching a couple walk hand-in-hand to their car through the window.

I couldn't help the longing that overtook my heart.

I had always wanted to find a great love; someone who I could share my life with until I died. I  never dated anyone seriously throughout school or my early adult years. I was always too busy trying to get good grades or find work. Then I decided to go to a club and get trashed on a particularly lonely night, and ended up giving my virginity to a stranger. That night resulted in my current situation, but I couldn't find it in myself to regret it.

Not when I was getting the greatest gift.

My only goal now was to give my child the best life, better than the one I had. I will never make her feel like a burden. I will always place her needs above my own.

Letting out a silent sigh, I turned my attention back to the men, who had gone quiet.

Each of them was staring at me with different expressions.

Axel's soft gaze had taken on a more serious tint as he studied my eyes. Avoiding him I looked towards Brandon who was staring at my hands that were settled on my stomach with a blank mask and pursed lips. Raven was shifting his gaze between myself, and the couple I had been studying, like he was trying to put the pieces of a puzzle together.

Feeling awkward under so much attention I cleared my throat.

It was time for me to leave.

"Well, it's time I get going. I have to get home and get ready for my shift at work. It was really nice getting to know you all. Thank you for the meal, and for your help earlier. I don't know what I would have done without you."

I was genuine with my gratitude giving each of them a small smile before looking at Raven expectantly. With a frown he exited the booth, and I scooted my way out.

Sending the three one last nod, I basically sped walked away to my car not once glancing back.
